Campgrounds and RV parks near Fruitdale, CA

Day trips from Fruitdale split naturally between mountains, coast, and city. Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Campground sits beside an old-growth redwood loop with the San Lorenzo River running through it, good for short hikes with kids and summer swimming holes. Main - Portola Redwoods State Park offers quieter backcountry trails and creekside picnic areas. Coyote Valley RV Resort is close to wineries and oak-grassland trails in south San Jose and Morgan Hill. From any base, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and downtown San Jose museums are within roughly an hour by road. Mountain biking, road cycling, and birding at nearby reservoirs round out the options on non-park days.

The Bay Area has a Mediterranean climate, so timing matters more than in many U.S. regions. Summer is warm, dry, and reliably sunny inland, with afternoon highs in the low 80s Fahrenheit at Fruitdale and cooler temperatures under the redwood canopy at Henry Cowell and Portola. Coastal fog often pushes inland in the mornings, then burns off by midday. This is peak season for state-park campgrounds, and reservations open six months ahead and fill quickly for weekends. Spring brings green hills, wildflowers, and variable rain, with most storms tapering off by mid-April. Fall is a strong shoulder season with warm dry days, cool nights, and lighter crowds, though high fire danger can prompt campfire bans or short-notice park closures. Winter is the wet season. Rain can close mountain roads and cause flooding along the San Lorenzo River near Felton, and some state-park loops reduce capacity or close temporarily after storms. Private RV resorts in the valley generally operate year-round.

Expect a clear divide between valley RV resorts and mountain state parks. Coyote Valley RV Resort, Redwood Resort RV Park and Campground, and Santa Cruz Ranch RV Resort offer paved or graveled pull-throughs, full hookups, Wi-Fi, and amenities like pools or laundry. Sites at Main - Portola Redwoods State Park and Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Campground are forested, generally without hookups, with a dump station, potable water, and shared restrooms. Cell signal is unreliable in the redwood canyons, so download maps before leaving the valley. Roads into Portola Redwoods are narrow and winding, with grade and length restrictions on some approaches. Bears are not a concern at most local sites, but raccoons are persistent, so food storage rules still apply.
