Campgrounds near Glen Ellen
Glen Ellen sits in the Sonoma Valley between Santa Rosa and the town of Sonoma, putting RV travelers within a short drive of state parks, private RV resorts, and county fairground hookups. The closest public option is Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, located in the Mayacamas Mountains northeast of Kenwood, where the park straddles the boundary between Sonoma and Napa counties and contains 2,729-foot Bald Mountain and the headwaters of Sonoma Creek. The campground accommodates RVs up to 31 feet and trailers up to 28 feet, with no hookups and no dump station, but water spigots are available to fill tanks.
For full hookups, Wine Country RV Park Sonoma sits in nearby Rohnert Park and offers 30 and 50 amp full hookup sites with picnic tables, WiFi, and cable TV, a short drive south of Santa Rosa. San Francisco North / Petaluma KOA and Sonoma County Fairgrounds RV Park round out the private and event-grounds options to the south and west. Crossing into Napa County, Bothe-Napa Valley State Park has 53 total campsites set among oak trees on a hillside next to Napa Valley, with 18 tent-only sites and 10 yurt sites.
Things to do near Glen Ellen
Hiking is the headline activity. Sugarloaf Ridge State Park includes 4,900 acres with over 25 miles of trails for hiking, horseback riding, and bicycle use, and trails range from short loops to longer climbs with elevation gains reaching 2,500 feet. Stargazing is a draw too: the Robert Ferguson Observatory sits within the park and runs regularly scheduled solar and star parties.
At Bothe-Napa Valley State Park, more than 10 miles of trails lead through rocky canyons, coast redwood groves, and creeks, and a seasonal swimming pool operates in summer. Visitors can follow trails along a stream or climb to a vantage point on Coyote Peak at 1,170 feet, and connecting paths reach nearby Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park and a grove of redwoods. Wine tasting in Kenwood and Glen Ellen, the town of Sonoma's historic plaza, and the Russian River are all within a short drive.

Sonoma Valley has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate with a long dry season and a concentrated wet season. Summers are long, warm, arid, and mostly clear, while winters are short, cool, wet, and partly cloudy. There is a distinct dry season from May through September, with December and January the wettest months and August the driest. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, while summer weekends draw heavy demand at every nearby park.
State-park sites fill quickly in the warm months. Sugarloaf and Bothe-Napa both operate year-round, but reservations are strongly recommended from roughly April through October and on holiday weekends. Wildfire risk shapes late-summer and early-fall trip planning. Sonoma and Napa counties experience long dry spells that elevate fire danger, and Red Flag Warnings issued by the National Weather Service signal periods of warm temperatures, very low humidity, and stronger winds that combine to produce increased risk. Wood-fire bans are common once conditions become too dry, so charcoal, propane grills, and cook stoves are the safer bet from midsummer into fall. Check air quality and park alerts before departure from roughly July through October.

How to book campgrounds near Glen Ellen
State-park sites in this area run through California's central reservation system, ReserveCalifornia. Camping reservations at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park can be made online at ReserveCalifornia.com or by calling 1-800-444-PARK, and the booking window is a rolling six months in advance, with new inventory opening daily at 8 a.m. Pacific time. Popular weekends in spring through fall book out fast. If no reservable spots are available, Sugarloaf releases first-come, first-served sites by phone at 10 a.m. on the day of arrival.
At Bothe-Napa Valley State Park, campsites, cabins, and yurts are all bookable through ReserveCalifornia on the same six-month rolling window, with a few drop-in sites available on a first-come, first-served basis, especially during the off season. Private parks such as Wine Country RV Park Sonoma and San Francisco North / Petaluma KOA book directly through their own websites or phone lines.
What to expect at Glen Ellen campgrounds
Public sites here favor scenery over hookups. Sugarloaf Ridge State Park's campground has 47 family sites set around a meadow along Sonoma Creek at about 1,200 feet elevation, with no hookups but potable water, flush toilets, hot showers, and trash collection. Cell reception is unreliable and limited WiFi is available only near the Visitor Center, so plan to arrive with full freshwater and empty holding tanks.
Bothe-Napa is similar in character but adds an RV dump station. Each site has a table, fire ring or grill, and a food storage locker, and most sites have shade. The campground also offers a campfire center, picnic area, horseshoe pit, drinking water, flush toilets, and coin showers. For full hookups, head to a private park: Wine Country RV Park Sonoma provides 30 and 50 amp electrical service, full water and sewer connections, pull-through sites, and modern restrooms with showers.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Glen Ellen, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Glen Ellen, CA?
RV rental in Glen Ellen is more affordable than you'd expect for wine country, with most rigs priced between $125 and $275 per night depending on size and season. Travel trailers and campervans typically sit on the lower end, while larger Class C motorhomes run higher. To find a cheap RV rental in Glen Ellen, aim for midweek pickups (Sunday through Thursday) and shoulder months like March, April, or November when harvest crowds thin out. Many Sonoma Valley hosts also offer weekly discounts, so a five-night Sugarloaf and winery loop can come in well under a hotel stay. Pro tip: filter for Instant Book to lock in the best Sonoma Valley pricing before festival weekends fill the calendar.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Glen%20Ellen%2C%20CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Glen Ellen?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Glen Ellen, with no commercial license or special endorsement required in California. You'll need to be at least 25 years old and verify your ID through the RVezy platform, which takes just a few minutes during booking. Visiting Sonoma wine country from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto association before you fly in and pair it with your home license. That covers everything from a nimble campervan rental in Glen Ellen to a 30-foot Class C cruising Highway 12. Most guests are surprised how quickly the verification clears, often the same day you book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Glen Ellen RV rental?
Every RVezy booking in Glen Ellen comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built in, so you're covered from the moment you pull out of the driveway. During checkout, you choose the level of protection that fits your trip, and it covers most physical damage to the vehicle while you're exploring Sonoma Valley. Hosts don't pick the package; you do, which keeps the choice in your hands. Whether you're winding up Adobe Canyon Road to Sugarloaf Ridge or heading into downtown Glen Ellen for dinner at the Glen Ellen Star, you can focus on the trip and not the what-ifs. Roadside assistance is included with every protection plan for added peace of mind.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Glen Ellen RV trip?
Booking is genuinely low-risk because RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, with a grace period built in right after you book. If your plans shift soon after reserving, you have a window to cancel and get your money back. Beyond that window, refunds depend on how far out your trip is. If a host needs to cancel, RVezy refunds guests or provides travel credits so you're never left stranded. Wildfire closures during Sonoma County's fire season can also impact trips, and RVezy's support team is in your corner if something unexpected pops up. Pro tip: book your wine-country RV early to lock in the rig you want, knowing flexibility is built in.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Glen Ellen RV rental?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Glen Ellen is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see plenty of Sonoma Valley rigs welcoming dogs (some hosts include a small cleaning fee, listed upfront). Once you're here, Jack London State Historic Park welcomes leashed dogs on the paved roads and at the cottage area, and Sugarloaf Ridge State Park allows dogs in the campground and on paved roads, though not on backcountry trails. Downtown Glen Ellen is famously dog-friendly too, with water bowls outside many tasting rooms. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet details, then pack a long lead and a shade tarp for warm valley afternoons.
jacklondonpark.com/Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Glen Ellen?
Yes, RV delivery in Glen Ellen is one of the easiest ways to skip the stress of driving an unfamiliar rig down winding wine-country roads. Many Sonoma Valley hosts will drop the motorhome or travel trailer right at your campsite at Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, set up the awning, level it, hook up water and power if available, and walk you through everything before they go. This is ideal for first-timers and for groups flying into San Francisco International (SFO) or Oakland International (OAK) without a tow vehicle. Delivery fees vary by distance, but most hosts within a 25-mile radius keep it reasonable. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see who offers it, and book early for harvest season weekends.

You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping near Glen Ellen. Sugarloaf Ridge State Park (about 8 miles up Highway 12 in Kenwood) is the local favorite, with around 50 sites in a meadow setting that accommodate RVs up to 27 feet, plus the Robert Ferguson Observatory for stargazing. Spring Lake Regional Park in Santa Rosa (about 15 miles) offers lakeside sites. San Francisco North/Petaluma KOA (around 25 miles south) has full hookups, a pool, and family activities. Bothe-Napa Valley State Park (about 25 miles east) sits under redwoods near Calistoga. For a coastal option, Doran Regional Park at Bodega Bay puts you steps from the ocean. Pro tip: confirm dump station availability before departure and plan a stop in Santa Rosa on your way out.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=453When is the best time to visit Glen Ellen in an RV?
Glen Ellen is a year-round destination thanks to Sonoma Valley's mild Mediterranean climate, but the sweet spots are April through June and September through early November. Spring brings wildflowers across Sugarloaf's meadows with daytime highs in the 65 to 75 F range, while fall delivers harvest season, golden vineyards, and warm 70 to 85 F afternoons. Summer (July to August) is hot and dry with highs often 85 to 95 F, perfect for evenings on the patio with a bottle of Zinfandel. Winter is the quiet secret: low 50s during the day, occasional rain, dramatic green hills, and great deals on rentals. Pro tip: book around a new moon to catch Sugarloaf's famous dark-sky stargazing at the Robert Ferguson Observatory.
weather.gov/mtr/I've never driven an RV before. Is Glen Ellen a good place to start?
Glen Ellen is one of the friendlier first-time RV destinations in California because the roads are scenic but manageable, and you're never far from help. Highway 12 (the Sonoma Highway) connects most wineries, campgrounds, and the town center with gentle curves and posted turnouts. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, from leveling and awning operation to dumping tanks, so you're never figuring it out alone. If you'd rather skip the drive entirely, book a host who offers delivery and setup. Pro tip for first time renting an RV: choose a Class B campervan or a 22 to 25 foot Class C, plan to arrive at Sugarloaf during daylight, and you'll be relaxed by your first glass of Pinot.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360003362253-RentersWhat happens if I have a roadside problem during my Glen Ellen trip?
You're covered: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Trinity Road or a dead battery at the Jack London State Historic Park trailhead is just a phone call away from being handled. Roadside services typically include tow, tire change, lockout, jump-start, and fuel delivery anywhere in Sonoma County. Your host is also reachable through the RVezy app for quick questions about the rig's quirks, and RVezy customer support is on standby before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap a photo of your rig's VIN and license plate at pickup and save the roadside number in your contacts so you can call hands-free if anything ever comes up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Glen Ellen RV rental across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?
Interstate trips are absolutely on the table, so an RV road trip from Glen Ellen to Crater Lake in Oregon, Lake Tahoe in Nevada, or Zion in Utah is fair game with most hosts. Just confirm the route with your host before booking so the mileage package and protection coverage are set up correctly. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and protection coverage, so message them directly from the listing page before you finalize the trip. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection plan doesn't extend across that border. Pro tip: popular multistate runs from Glen Ellen include the Pacific Coast Highway north to Oregon and the Sierra loop through Yosemite and Mammoth Lakes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for in Glen Ellen?
Plan smart and your fuel budget for a Sonoma Valley trip is very manageable. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (mpg), campervans like a Sprinter-based Class B average 16 to 20 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. California gas typically runs higher than the national average, so check current prices in Santa Rosa or Sonoma before topping off (both are usually cheaper than stations right in Glen Ellen). For a 4-night Sonoma Valley loop covering 200 to 300 miles, budget roughly $90 to $180 in fuel for a mid-size motorhome. Pro tip: fill up in Petaluma or Rohnert Park on your way in or out, where prices tend to drop a noticeable amount compared to in-valley pumps.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Glen Ellen?
Book early and you'll get the spot you want. Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, Bothe-Napa Valley State Park, and other California State Park campgrounds release reservations six months in advance on ReserveCalifornia, and summer weekends plus harvest-season Fridays and Saturdays fill quickly after opening. For private parks like the San Francisco North/Petaluma KOA, three to four months out is usually safe. Spring midweek and winter dates are often available within a few weeks. Pro tip: if you miss out on a reservation at Sugarloaf, contact the park on your day of arrival to ask about any first-come, first-served availability, which can be a great backup for a spontaneous Glen Ellen RV trip.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the driving conditions like around Glen Ellen?
Driving in Glen Ellen is mostly relaxed two-lane country roads, but a little local knowledge helps. Highway 12 between Sonoma and Santa Rosa is the main artery, well-paved and RV-friendly, though it can slow during harvest weekends in September and October. Trinity Road and Cavedale Road over the Mayacamas Mountains are narrow, steep, and not recommended for any RV; stick to Highway 12 or Highway 121 instead. Adobe Canyon Road up to Sugarloaf Ridge State Park is paved but winding, with RV length limits at the campground. Summer fire-season alerts occasionally close roads, so check Caltrans QuickMap before you roll. Pro tip: do your driving before 11 a.m. or after 4 p.m. to dodge tasting-room traffic.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities and dump stations should I expect at Glen Ellen-area campgrounds?
Expect a friendly mix. Sugarloaf Ridge State Park has potable water spigots, flush toilets, coin showers, picnic tables, and fire rings, but does not offer hookups on site, so plan a dump stop in Santa Rosa or at the San Francisco North/Petaluma KOA on your way out. Spring Lake Regional Park offers some sites with hookups. The KOA in Petaluma has full hookups, laundry, Wi-Fi, and a pool. Cell signal can be spotty inside Sugarloaf, which many campers actually appreciate. Pro tip: top off freshwater before climbing Adobe Canyon Road and bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose, since spigots aren't always right at your site.
parks.sonomacounty.ca.gov/visit/find-a-park/spring-lake-regional-parkWhat's inside a typical Glen Ellen RV rental?
More than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental in Glen Ellen comes fully equipped: queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa for extra sleepers, a kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, plus a bathroom with toilet, shower, and hot water. Most Class C and Class A rigs include air conditioning (a real win on 90 F August afternoons), a furnace, a generator or solar setup, a flat-screen TV, and seatbelted seating for 4 to 8. Campervans are simpler but include a bed, kitchenette, and often a portable toilet. Many hosts add Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor chairs, and BBQs as included extras. Pro tip: check the listing photos and message the host about bedding and kitchen kit so you know exactly what to pack.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Glen%20Ellen%2C%20CaliforniaWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect when I rent an RV in Glen Ellen?
Hosts in the Sonoma Valley typically offer a thoughtful menu of add-ons that make your trip smoother. Common extras include bedding and linen packages, camp chairs and tables, propane fire pits, generator hours, paddleboards or bikes, and pet packages. Many hosts in Glen Ellen and nearby Kenwood, Sonoma, and Santa Rosa offer delivery and setup for a flat fee. Pickup is usually at the host's home or a local meet-up point, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included so you leave confident. Mileage policies vary, with daily allowances commonly 100 to 150 miles and unlimited-mileage options on select rigs. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a stocked kitchen kit and skip the rental-counter hassle entirely.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Glen%20Ellen%2C%20CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Glen Ellen RV rental?
Payment is simple and fully handled through RVezy: you pay securely online when you book, with no cash changing hands at pickup. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before your trip starts, then released after drop-off assuming the rig comes back in the same condition you got it (and within the agreed mileage and generator hours). Deposit amounts vary by rig. To avoid surprises, do a quick walkaround video at pickup and drop-off, refill propane and fresh water if required, and dump the tanks at a Santa Rosa station before you return. Pro tip: book a rig with a clear listing checklist so expectations are crystal clear from day one.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trips and wineries to visit from a Glen Ellen RV base?
Glen Ellen is the perfect launchpad for a family RV trip in Sonoma County. Right in town, visit Benziger Family Winery for their biodynamic tram tour and grab dinner at the Glen Ellen Star. From there, you're 5 minutes to Jack London State Historic Park, 15 minutes to downtown Sonoma's historic plaza, 25 minutes to Healdsburg's tasting rooms, and 45 minutes to Bodega Bay for clam chowder and tide pools. Longer drives include Point Reyes National Seashore (about 90 minutes), Muir Woods (about 75 minutes), and the redwoods of Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve near Guerneville (about 40 minutes). Local insider tip: park the RV in town and take the Sonoma Valley Trolley on select weekends so the driver can taste too.
