Campgrounds and RV parks near Hercules, CA

The Bay Trail runs along the Hercules shoreline and connects north toward the Carquinez Strait, with paved sections suitable for walking and cycling from any of the nearby RV parks. Benicia State Recreation Area covers marsh, grassy hillsides, and rocky beaches along the narrowest portion of the Carquinez Strait, with about two and a half miles of road and bike paths used by cyclists, runners, walkers, equestrians, and roller skaters, plus picnicking, bird watching, and fishing. The marshland area on Dillon's Point is a particularly favorite place for fishing. Families often pair a Hercules base with day trips to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, the Mare Island historic district, and Napa Valley wineries to the north. The Vallejo/SF Express Ferry runs across the bay to Fisherman's Wharf, letting renters leave the RV parked and reach downtown San Francisco without driving.

The Hercules area has a Mediterranean climate: wet, mild winters and dry, warm summers. Most private RV parks in Vallejo and Greenbrae, including Tradewinds RV Park, Vallejo RV Park, Marin Park, and Marin RV Park, stay open year-round. Public options are more limited in the cold months: Benicia State Recreation Area's enroute sites operate first-come, first-served with no reservations possible, and California State Parks campgrounds elsewhere in the region often see reduced staffing in winter. Late spring and early fall offer the most predictable weather, with warm days, cool nights, and minimal rain. Summer brings dry, sunny inland days, but coastal fog can roll into San Pablo Bay and the Marin shore on summer mornings and evenings, so renters staying in Greenbrae should plan for cooler temperatures than in Vallejo or Benicia. February typically sees the most rain, with about 70 mm of precipitation over roughly eight rainy days, and winter overall is the wettest stretch. Reservations at popular Bay Area RV parks fill quickly for summer weekends, holiday periods, and Solano County Fair dates in Vallejo.

Expect urban-edge RV parks rather than backcountry campgrounds. Tradewinds RV Park offers 78 sites of various sizes, including large pull-throughs, all with level gravel beds, full hookups, 30-50 amp service, and vehicle parking, and sites can accommodate most slide-outs. Amenities include Wi-Fi, cable TV hookups, laundry, restrooms, showers, and a guest lounge. Layouts are tight by design, and road and freeway noise is common since most parks sit close to I-80 or US-101. Benicia State Recreation Area does not provide water hookups, electric connections, or running water, and there are no fire pits or drinking water on site, with a one-night limit on enroute use. Cell service across the area is strong thanks to proximity to Bay Area cities. Dogs are welcome at the private parks and must be on a leash at all times inside the state recreation area. Renters bringing larger rigs should confirm length limits when booking.
