Campgrounds and RV parks near Highlands, CA

The coast west of Highlands is the main draw. Visitors can walk or cycle the paved Coastside Trail, which links Pillar Point Harbor to the beaches at Half Moon Bay and runs directly through the state beach campground. Pillar Point Harbor is the launch point for sport fishing and whale-watching charters, and the offshore Mavericks break draws spectators during big winter swells. Tide-pooling at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in Moss Beach is a strong option for families at low tide. Inland, the Peninsula offers easy day trips to Crystal Springs Reservoir trails, redwood hikes at Purisima Creek, and the shops and farms around the town of Half Moon Bay.

The coast near Highlands runs on a Mediterranean rhythm: a wet, cool winter and a dry, mild summer. Rain concentrates between November and March, with December typically the wettest month, averaging around 144 mm. Summer brings almost no rainfall but heavy marine-layer fog, which often holds along the coast into the early afternoon before clearing. Inland temperatures over the ridge in San Mateo run noticeably warmer than at the beach campgrounds. Peak demand for coastal sites runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day and across weekends in September and October, when fog tends to thin. From May 1 through October 31 there is a 7-day camping limit at Francis Beach, while from November 1 through April 30 campers may stay up to 15 days. Winter stays are quieter, and storms can bring strong onshore wind. Swimming is not recommended due to dangerous rip currents and very cold water. Spring shoulder weeks in April and May often deliver the best balance of availability, wildflowers on the bluffs, and clear afternoons.

Coastal sites are exposed and breezy, and afternoon wind close to the beach can be sustained. Pack layers, windbreaks, and a warm sleeping setup even in July. At Francis Beach, more than half the campground offers electrical hookups, but there are no water or sewer hookups at the campsites. The park has a dump and potable water station, and the dump fee is not included in the reservation. The majority of campsites accommodate RVs and trailers up to 40 feet, with four tent-only sites. Private parks along the coast generally offer full hookups and stricter rig-length limits, so confirm site dimensions when booking. Dogs are allowed on leash in the campground and on the Coastside Trail, but are not permitted on the beach itself.
