Campgrounds near Kensington overview
Kensington is a small unincorporated community in the Berkeley Hills of Contra Costa County, sitting in the East Bay portion of the San Francisco Bay Area. The town has no RV campgrounds within its own footprint, but its position just north of Berkeley and across the bay from San Francisco puts renters within easy driving distance of options around the north and east Bay shoreline.
Closest RV-friendly stays cluster along the I-80 and I-780 corridors toward Vallejo and Benicia. Tradewinds RV Park and Vallejo RV Park sit north of the Carquinez Bridge, while Benicia State Recreational Area offers limited overnight stops along the narrowest portion of the Carquinez Strait. Closer to San Francisco itself, Candlestick RV Park and Golden Gate Trailer Park provide urban full-hookup options reachable via the Bay Bridge or Golden Gate.
Kensington's main entrance to Tilden Regional Park lies just east of town, giving RV renters quick access to trails, Lake Anza, and the Little Farm for day trips from a nearby base.
Things to do near Kensington
Tilden Regional Park borders Kensington directly and covers 2,079 acres along the ridge above Berkeley. Families use Lake Anza for seasonal swimming, the carousel and Little Farm for younger kids, and Nimitz Way, a paved and wheelchair-accessible path, for stroller-friendly walks with bay views. The park connects to Wildcat Canyon Regional Park for longer hikes, and the East Bay Skyline National Recreation Trail follows Nimitz Way for part of its route.
Benicia State Recreation Area offers about 2.5 miles of road and bike paths through marsh, grassy hillsides, and rocky beaches, with fishing at Dillon's Point and bird watching across the tidal wetlands. Blake Garden, operated by UC Berkeley, sits in Kensington itself. San Francisco landmarks, Berkeley's campus, and the Oakland waterfront are all within a short drive.

The Bay Area runs on a Mediterranean climate: temperate, wet winters and warm, dry summers, with almost all precipitation falling between November and April. Winter storms typically arrive in multi-day clusters separated by clear, mild stretches, so RV travel remains workable but sites can be muddy and some state-park campgrounds shift to limited service.
Spring greens the hills and is one of the better windows for trail use around Tilden and Wildcat Canyon, with mild temperatures and occasional showers. Summer is the busiest booking season; nearby campgrounds fill weeks out and coastal fog pushes through the Golden Gate from roughly April through October, with August often the foggiest. Inland East Bay sites stay warmer and sunnier than the immediate coast.
Fall typically brings the warmest, clearest weather of the year and is a strong shoulder season for RV trips, though wildfire risk and red-flag wind events can prompt East Bay Regional Park District closures and PG&E public safety power shutoffs.

Angel 😇 Life Saver ⛑️ Great Communication 📲📞 Informative 📚 PUNCTUAL ⏳️ Just a few words to describe this wonderful Host. When my prior host backed out and canceled on me the day of (There was no communication up til 48hrs before trip, and stopped again the morning of. I reached out for clarification and location, no response! Moments later Rveezy tells me the host is no longer comfortable with accommodating us) Evgeniy not only responed within 5min of me reachout out, but had us out and on the road to enjoy out trip within an hour. The vehicle is perfect, clean and easy to function. We had never driven or worked an RV before but his quick rundown and eargeness to answer any questions helped put out minds at ease. He is so kind, professonal, and absolutely Amazing 🤩. We will definitely rent from him again despite our extra charges for not having time to thoroughly clean out and fill up; but that was a very small price to pay for what we would have missed if he hadn't come to help us out of a pickle. They only gave the options of 5 stars so I'll leave the rest here : ✨️⭐️🌟⭐️✨️⭐️🌟✨️⭐️🌟⭐️✨️⭐️🌟✨️⭐️🌟⭐️✨️🌟⭐️✨️🌟⭐️✨️🌟✨️⭐️🌟✨️⭐️🌟⭐️✨️🌟⭐️✨️🌟⭐️✨️🌟⭐️✨️

How to book campgrounds near Kensington
California State Parks units use the ReserveCalifornia system on a six-month rolling window, with new inventory opening each day at 8 a.m. Pacific. Reservations can be made online at ReserveCalifornia.com or by phone at 1-800-444-PARK, and most parks accept bookings up to two days before arrival, subject to availability. Benicia State Recreational Area is different: it offers three enroute overnight sites on a first-come, first-served basis for fully self-contained motorhomes or trailers, with no reservations possible and tents not permitted.
East Bay Regional Park District campgrounds, such as those in Tilden, handle group camping reservations by phone with advance notice. Private parks like Tradewinds RV Park, Candlestick RV Park, Vallejo RV Park, and Golden Gate Trailer Park book directly through the operator.
What to expect on the ground
Most stays near Kensington are urban or suburban RV parks rather than wilderness campgrounds, so renters should expect paved pads, full hookups, and traffic noise rather than secluded forest sites. Cell service is typically strong throughout the area due to proximity to Berkeley, Oakland, and San Francisco.
Benicia State Recreational Area is set up as an overnight stopover, not a destination: enroute spots are used as day parking, so vehicles must leave by 9 a.m., and the area is busy with joggers and cyclists during the day. Roads into Tilden Regional Park climb winding hills off Grizzly Peak Boulevard and can be tight for larger rigs. Summer evenings cool quickly once marine air pushes inland, so layers are essential even on warm days, and dogs must be leashed in state and regional parks.
