Camping near Kentfield, California
Kentfield is an unincorporated community in central Marin County, roughly 16 miles north of San Francisco and within easy reach of Mount Tamalpais State Park, Point Reyes National Seashore, and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The town itself has no campground, but several RV parks and state and national park campgrounds sit within a short drive. Marin RV Park in neighboring Greenbrae is the closest full-hookup option, with level gravel sites suited to recharging between Bay Area day trips. Marin Park and Golden Gate Trailer Park add nearby private options, while Novato RV Park sits a bit farther north along the Highway 101 corridor. For travelers willing to drive to the coast, Olema Campground offers full RV hookups and tent sites near the Bear Valley entrance to Point Reyes. Kentfield works well as a base for visiting Muir Woods, Stinson Beach, Sausalito, and downtown San Francisco via the nearby Larkspur ferry.
Things to do around Kentfield
Outdoor recreation drives most Kentfield trips. Mount Tamalpais State Park sits roughly 10 miles away, with panoramic Bay Area views and hiking and biking trails. Muir Woods National Monument is about 15 miles from Kentfield and features old-growth coastal redwoods and walking trails. Point Reyes National Seashore lies roughly 30 miles away, with hiking trails, beaches, and wildlife viewing. Samuel P. Taylor State Park, about 10 miles west along Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, adds redwood-lined creek camping and bike trails. Closer in, families can ride the Larkspur ferry into downtown San Francisco, walk or bike the paved paths along Corte Madera Creek, browse Sausalito's waterfront, or take in views of the Golden Gate Bridge from the Marin Headlands. Stinson Beach offers swimming and surf lessons within an hour's drive over the Panoramic Highway.

Marin County camps year-round, but conditions and crowds shift by season. Summer inland days are warm, with highs often in the 70s and 80s and occasional pushes into the 90s, while fall and winter run cooler, with daytime highs in the upper 50s and low 60s. Coastal sites at Stinson Beach and Point Reyes stay cooler than inland Kentfield, often shrouded in summer fog through July and August. Late spring brings wildflowers and waterfalls on Mount Tam, and gray whales pass offshore from roughly December through May.
Summer weekends and holidays book up months ahead at every state and national park campground in the area, so reservations are essential from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Fall delivers the most stable weather: warm days, clear coastal views, and lighter crowds after Labor Day. Winter is the wet season, with heavy rain pulses on Pacific storm tracks and occasional road closures on coastal Highway 1. Camping at Mount Tamalpais State Park is possible year-round, but the Steep Ravine cabins close in October for annual maintenance.

Angel 😇 Life Saver ⛑️ Great Communication 📲📞 Informative 📚 PUNCTUAL ⏳️ Just a few words to describe this wonderful Host. When my prior host backed out and canceled on me the day of (There was no communication up til 48hrs before trip, and stopped again the morning of. I reached out for clarification and location, no response! Moments later Rveezy tells me the host is no longer comfortable with accommodating us) Evgeniy not only responed within 5min of me reachout out, but had us out and on the road to enjoy out trip within an hour. The vehicle is perfect, clean and easy to function. We had never driven or worked an RV before but his quick rundown and eargeness to answer any questions helped put out minds at ease. He is so kind, professonal, and absolutely Amazing 🤩. We will definitely rent from him again despite our extra charges for not having time to thoroughly clean out and fill up; but that was a very small price to pay for what we would have missed if he hadn't come to help us out of a pickle. They only gave the options of 5 stars so I'll leave the rest here : ✨️⭐️🌟⭐️✨️⭐️🌟✨️⭐️🌟⭐️✨️⭐️🌟✨️⭐️🌟⭐️✨️🌟⭐️✨️🌟⭐️✨️🌟✨️⭐️🌟✨️⭐️🌟⭐️✨️🌟⭐️✨️🌟⭐️✨️🌟⭐️✨️

How to book campgrounds near Kentfield
Reservation systems vary by operator. California State Parks, including Samuel P. Taylor and the reservable sites at Mount Tamalpais, use ReserveCalifornia, which opens a rolling window up to six months in advance of arrival at 8 a.m. Pacific Time. Pantoll, Bootjack, and the Frank Valley Group Horse Camp at Mount Tamalpais are first-come, first-served. The Steep Ravine Cabins are highly sought after and are now distributed through a ReserveCalifornia lottery-style reservation drawing, with applications accepted up to eight months in advance.
Backcountry and boat-in camping in Point Reyes National Seashore is by permit only through Recreation.gov, with three-month and 14-day rolling windows depending on the site. There is no drive-in car or RV camping inside Point Reyes. Private RV parks such as Marin RV Park, Marin Park, Golden Gate Trailer Park, Novato RV Park, and Olema Campground are booked directly with each operator and fill earliest for summer weekends.
What to expect on the ground
RV travelers should plan for narrow Marin roads and tight sites. Marin RV Park in Greenbrae is the closest full-hookup option to Kentfield, with level gravel sites, though spots are narrow, particularly for RVs with slides extended. State park campgrounds on Mount Tamalpais are walk-in tent sites rather than drive-in RV pads, and RVs and trailers are not allowed at Steep Ravine. Cell service is generally reliable in the Kentfield, Greenbrae, and Novato corridor, but drops off quickly along Highway 1 and inside the Point Reyes wilderness. Expect cool, foggy mornings even in summer near the coast, warm afternoons inland, and a steep day-use parking scramble at Muir Woods, Stinson Beach, and Mount Tam trailheads on weekends. Pack layers, a rain shell in winter, and reserve any Muir Woods parking or shuttle slots in advance.
