Camping near Kenwood, California
Kenwood sits in the Sonoma Valley between Santa Rosa and the town of Sonoma, with Highway 12 running through and the Mayacamas Mountains rising to the east. The closest public campground is Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, just up Adobe Canyon Road, which straddles the Sonoma and Napa county line and contains 2,729-foot Bald Mountain and the headwaters of Sonoma Creek. Roughly 25 miles east in the Napa Valley, Bothe-Napa Valley State Park offers a second wooded option with cabins and yurts in addition to drive-in sites.
For RV travelers who want full hookups, three private parks ring the area: Sonoma County Fairgrounds RV Park in central Santa Rosa, Wine Country RV Park Sonoma in Rohnert Park, and San Francisco North / Petaluma KOA south toward Petaluma. The state-park sites are best for tents and smaller rigs without hookups, while the private parks handle larger motorhomes and trailers. Wineries, tasting rooms, and Sonoma Plaza are all within a short drive.
Things to do near Kenwood
Sugarloaf Ridge State Park has about 25 miles of trails ranging from short loops to the climb to Bald Mountain, where the view takes in vineyards, San Francisco Bay, and on clear days the Sierra. The park is also home to the volunteer-run Robert Ferguson Observatory, which hosts solar viewing and evening star parties. A seasonal waterfall runs in the wet months, with Sonoma Creek typically holding water for much of the year.
Bothe-Napa Valley State Park adds hiking trails through oak, Douglas-fir, and madrone, along with a seasonal swimming pool open on a limited summer schedule. Kenwood itself is surrounded by tasting rooms along Highway 12, and downtown Sonoma, Glen Ellen, and Calistoga are all within a 30-minute drive for restaurants, mineral springs, and historic sites.

The area has a Mediterranean climate: warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Camping at Sugarloaf Ridge is open year-round, but weekend sites from late spring through early fall fill quickly, so booking ahead matters most in those windows. Glamping tents at Sugarloaf are seasonal and generally available in the warmer months.
Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable for RV travel: daytime highs are warm, nights cool off, and trails are open. Summer days can be very hot inland, and because the state-park sites here have no hookups, shade and ventilation matter. Fire danger rises through summer and fall, and campfire restrictions are common in both Sugarloaf Ridge and Bothe-Napa Valley when conditions become dry. Winter brings the bulk of the rain, fog in the valleys, and a seasonal waterfall at Sugarloaf that typically dries up by mid-summer.

Moments later Rveezy tells me the host is no longer comfortable with accommodating us) Evgeniy not only responed within 5min of me reachout out, but had us out and on the road to enjoy out trip within an hour. He is so kind, professonal, and absolutely Amazing 🤩. We will definitely rent from him again despite our extra charges for not having time to thoroughly clean out and fill up; but that was a very small price to pay for what we would have missed if he hadn't come to help us out of a pickle. How to book a site
Sugarloaf Ridge State Park and Bothe-Napa Valley State Park both use ReserveCalifornia, the statewide reservation system run by California State Parks, with online booking or phone reservations through 800-444-7275. Weekend dates in the warmer months tend to disappear early, so booking ahead is recommended. If a date shows no availability, Sugarloaf typically releases any unreserved first-come, first-served sites on the day of arrival.
Private parks book directly. Sonoma County Fairgrounds RV Park, Wine Country RV Park Sonoma, and San Francisco North / Petaluma KOA each take reservations through their own websites or phone lines, and Wine Country RV Park Sonoma is RV-only with no tent sites.
What to expect on site
Sugarloaf Ridge has about 47 family sites set around a meadow, with potable water, flush toilets, and hot showers, but no hookups and no dump station; the park can accommodate RVs up to roughly 31 feet and trailers up to 28 feet. Cell service is poor and limited Wi-Fi is available near the visitor center. Bothe-Napa Valley has drive-in, walk-in, and RV sites, plus yurts and cabins, with coin-operated showers but no dump station; family sites accommodate RVs up to about 31 feet and trailers up to 24 feet.
The private parks are different in character: Sonoma County Fairgrounds RV Park is a large gravel lot with 30/50-amp full hookups, laundry, and showers, and Wine Country RV Park Sonoma offers full hookups, a pool, cable TV, and Wi-Fi on pull-through and back-in sites for RVs only.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Kenwood, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Kenwood, CA?
RV rental in Kenwood, CA is more approachable than many expect for Wine Country. Travel trailers typically start around $100 to $175 per night, while Class C motorhomes generally range from $200 to $350 per night, with larger Class A coaches priced higher. Because Kenwood sits in the Sonoma Valley AVA, prices peak during harvest (August through October) and dip mid-week and in winter. To find a cheap RV rental in Kenwood, filter by travel trailers, book three or more nights, and look for hosts offering delivery to Sugarloaf Ridge State Park so you can skip towing. Sunday-to-Thursday bookings often save versus weekends.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kenwood%2C%20CaliforniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Kenwood?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Kenwood, CA. California does not require a Commercial Driver's License or an RV-specific endorsement for non-commercial motorhomes under 40 feet, which covers virtually every rig on RVezy. RVezy approved drivers must generally be 25 or older, and ID verification happens inside the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Pick up an International Driving Permit from your home auto association before you fly in, pair it with your home license, and you are set for your Sonoma Valley RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside help comes with my RV rental in Kenwood?
Every RV rental in Kenwood booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Highway 12 with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout, and it covers damage to the RV during your trip based on the plan you select. If you get a flat near Adobe Canyon Road or need a tow off Trinity Road, one call to RVezy roadside assistance gets help dispatched. This bundled coverage is one of the biggest reasons first-time renters feel confident booking an RV rental in Kenwood, CA through RVezy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Kenwood RV rental?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy sets a standardized cancellation policy that applies to your reservation, not a host-defined one. The exact refund amount depends on how far in advance you cancel, and full details are available in the RVezy Help Center before you confirm. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook, and if a wildfire reroutes Highway 12 or a winter storm closes Adobe Canyon Road into Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, reach out to RVezy support to review your options. Review the cancellation terms before booking so you know exactly where you stand.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Kenwood RV trip?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental in Kenwood is easy to find on RVezy: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and message the host to confirm. Sonoma Valley is a famously dog-loving region, and many local hosts welcome well-behaved pups. At Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, dogs are allowed in the campground and on paved roads but not on hiking trails, and they must sleep inside your RV at night. For trail time, head to Jack London State Historic Park's pet-allowed areas or stroll Kenwood Plaza Park. Several Kenwood wineries, including Kunde Family Estate, welcome leashed dogs on their patios.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=453Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Kenwood?
Yes, RV delivery in Kenwood is one of the smartest moves for first-time renters, and many RVezy hosts offer it as an add-on. They will drive the rig to Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, a private vineyard property, or your vacation rental driveway, level it, hook up power and water if available, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no towing the winding climb up Adobe Canyon Road, no backing into a tight site, and no figuring out the awning alone. Filter listings by Delivery on RVezy and message hosts for a delivery quote based on your destination.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kenwood%2C%20CaliforniaHow far can I drive on a Kenwood RV trip and what about mileage limits?
Kenwood is a perfect launchpad for a Sonoma Valley RV trip because so many bucket-list spots are within easy reach. Hosts on RVezy set their own mileage policies, and you'll see options ranging from 100 free miles per night to RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for longer routes. From Kenwood, San Francisco is about 60 miles south, the Pacific at Bodega Bay is 40 miles west, Mendocino redwoods are 100 miles north, and Yosemite is roughly 200 miles east. Pick unlimited-mileage listings if you're planning a multi-stop loop, and standard mileage if you're staying close to the vineyards.
visitcalifornia.com/places-to-visit/sonoma-valley/Where are the best campgrounds near Kenwood for an RV?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in Kenwood. Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, just up Adobe Canyon Road, has family campsites that fit RVs up to about 27 feet, plus the Robert Ferguson Observatory on site. Spring Lake Regional Park in Santa Rosa (about 12 miles away) offers oak-shaded sites with a swim lagoon. Bothe-Napa Valley State Park sits about 30 minutes east through redwoods. For full hookups, San Francisco North/Petaluma KOA is roughly 25 miles south. Book Sugarloaf through ReserveCalifornia up to six months ahead for the best chance at peak-season weekends.
sugarloafpark.org/things-to-do/camping/When is the best time to rent an RV in Kenwood?
Kenwood's Mediterranean climate means there's really no bad time, but the sweet spots are April through June and September through early November. Spring brings wildflowers, the Sugarloaf waterfall, and 60s to mid-70s daytime highs. Late summer and early fall align with grape harvest, with warm days in the 80s and cool nights ideal for sleeping in an RV. July and August can hit the upper 80s to mid-90s, so look for a rig with strong air conditioning and a generator. Winter (December to February) stays mild at 55 to 65 degrees, rarely freezing, and offers the best RV rental Kenwood deals of the year.
weather.gov/mtr/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, and Kenwood is honestly one of the friendliest spots in California for first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering the propane, water, slides, dump valves, and generator, and you can text them throughout your trip with questions. The roads around Kenwood, mainly Highway 12 between Santa Rosa and Sonoma, are wide, flat, and well-marked. Pro tip: book a travel trailer that the host delivers to Sugarloaf Ridge or a vineyard so your only job is enjoying Wine Country. Message any host before booking with your questions, they expect it.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/What happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
Help is one call away, day or night. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance for flats, lockouts, dead batteries, tows, and mechanical breakdowns, which matters in Kenwood because cell service can drop in spots like Adobe Canyon and along Trinity Road over the Mayacamas. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave the driveway. Your host is also a quick text away for questions about quirks specific to their RV. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip, so you're never figuring it out alone in a vineyard parking lot.
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/road-informationCan I take my Kenwood RV rental on a road trip to Oregon or Mexico?
You've got plenty of room to roam on an RV road trip from Kenwood. Cross-state travel into Oregon, Nevada, or Arizona is generally fine, and many hosts welcome it, just confirm the route in your booking message so insurance and protection coverage stays valid. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because coverage doesn't extend across that border. Popular routes from Kenwood include Highway 1 to Big Sur (4 hours), the Avenue of the Giants redwoods (3 hours north), Lake Tahoe (3.5 hours east), and Crater Lake, Oregon (8 hours north). Always message the host first with your full itinerary.
visitcalifornia.com/road-trips/How much should I budget for fuel on a Kenwood RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, so plan smart. As of 2026, California's average gas price hovers around $5.50 to $6.00 per gallon, well above the national average, and diesel runs slightly higher. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans get 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. For a 300-mile loop from Kenwood through Bodega Bay and back, budget roughly $150 to $200 in gas for a Class C. Fill up in Santa Rosa or Sonoma where prices are lower than tiny Kenwood stations, and use the GasBuddy app along Highway 12.
gasprices.aaa.com/?state=CAHow far in advance should I book a campground near Kenwood?
Book early, especially for summer weekends. Sugarloaf Ridge State Park in Kenwood opens reservations six months out through ReserveCalifornia and fills fast for May through October weekends, harvest season especially. Sonoma County Regional Parks like Spring Lake also open at six months and book up quickly. From November 1 through March 14, Sugarloaf is first-come, first-served, which is a great hack for spontaneous off-season trips. Insider tip: midweek sites are almost always available even in peak summer, and weekday rates are the same as weekends. If you want delivery, lock in your campground first, then book the RV.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the roads like for driving an RV around Kenwood?
Driving an RV in Kenwood is mostly relaxing. Highway 12, the main artery, is a wide, gently rolling two-lane road through vineyards connecting Santa Rosa and Sonoma, perfect for any size rig. The one road that demands attention is Adobe Canyon Road, the 3.5-mile climb up to Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, narrow, winding, and steep in spots, so RVs over 30 feet should take it slow. Avoid Trinity Road and Cavedale Road over the Mayacamas Mountains in larger motorhomes, those are tight, twisty shortcuts to Napa. Watch for cyclists and harvest-season tractors, and you'll be fine. Fog can roll in early mornings in fall.
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/road-informationWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds around Kenwood?
Campgrounds near Kenwood vary, so it's good to know before you go. Sugarloaf Ridge State Park has flush toilets, coin-operated hot showers, picnic tables, fire rings, and potable water spigots, but no RV hookups and no public Wi-Fi, and cell service is spotty. Spring Lake Regional Park offers a dump station for $10, electrical outlets in bathrooms, and showers. For full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), head to San Francisco North/Petaluma KOA or Cloverdale Wine Country RV Park. Generator hours at Sugarloaf are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Pro tip: top off your fresh water in Santa Rosa before heading up Adobe Canyon.
parks.sonomacounty.ca.gov/play/camping/tent-trailer-and-rv-campsitesWhat should I expect inside a Kenwood RV rental?
Most motorhome rentals in Kenwood come fully equipped to live comfortably for a week or longer. Expect a queen or king bed, convertible dinette, a kitchen with a fridge, propane stove, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, and a furnace. Class C and larger Class A rigs usually include a generator, outdoor TV, and outside kitchen. Wi-Fi and rooftop solar are common upgrades, listed in the Amenities section of each listing. Seatbelt count matters for a family RV trip in Kenwood, so filter by Sleeps and check the seatbelt number before booking if young kids are along.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kenwood%2C%20CaliforniaWhat add-ons and pickup options do Kenwood RV hosts offer?
Hosts make your campervan rental Kenwood experience easier with smart add-ons. Common options include linen and towel kits, camp chairs and tables, propane fire pits (a must since wood fires are restricted on Spare the Air days), generators, bike racks, and stocked kitchen kits. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Kenwood, Glen Ellen, or Santa Rosa, with a 30 to 60 minute orientation walkthrough. Many hosts offer delivery for a per-mile fee, and some include free delivery to Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. Mileage policies range from a set number of free miles per night to unlimited mileage, listed clearly on each listing.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Kenwood%2C%20CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy at the time of booking, never directly to the host, which protects both sides. A refundable security deposit, set by the host and typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV class, is pre-authorized separately from your booking payment before pickup and released after the trip if there is no damage and no excess mileage or generator use. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkthrough at pickup with your phone camera rolling, note any existing dings, and confirm the fuel and propane levels. Return the rig clean and on time, and your deposit comes right back.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park or stay overnight outside of campgrounds near Kenwood?
Where to park an RV in Kenwood overnight comes down to a few solid options. California rest areas allow overnight parking up to 8 hours in any 24-hour period (no slides, no awnings out), with the closest along Highway 101. Many Sonoma Valley wineries participate in Harvest Hosts, letting self-contained RVs stay one night free with a wine purchase, a fantastic Kenwood-specific perk. Walmart in Rohnert Park (15 miles south) historically allows overnight RV parking with manager approval. Avoid parking on Kenwood residential streets between midnight and 5 a.m., that's restricted statewide. Best move: book a campsite or use winery hosting for the full Wine Country vibe.
