Campgrounds near Knightsen, California
Knightsen is a small unincorporated community in eastern Contra Costa County, set in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta about an hour from the San Francisco Bay Area and Sacramento. The area sits at the edge of a braided network of channels and sloughs that make up the Delta, which shapes nearly every camping option nearby. Most RV parks within a short drive cluster on Bethel Island and along the Delta Loop near Isleton, putting waterfront access, boat launches, and fishing within walking distance of a site.
Sugar Barge RV Resort and Marina and Eddo's Harbor and RV Park anchor the Bethel Island side, both privately operated with full hookups and on-site marinas. Across the Delta, Park Delta Bay, Rio Viento RV Park, and Lighthouse Marina Restaurant and Resort sit along the San Joaquin River and Delta Loop with grass sites, mature shade trees, and direct river access. Knightsen itself does not have an RV park inside town limits, so trip planning generally focuses on these surrounding Delta resorts.
Things to do near Knightsen
Water defines the trip. The Delta supports striped bass, black bass, catfish, sturgeon, and bluegill fishing, and the open channels are well suited to boating, water skiing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Sugar Barge RV Resort and Marina rents fishing boats, patio boats, and kayaks on site, and Park Delta Bay sits across the road from a marina with a small store and dock. Off the water, Mount Diablo State Park lies to the southwest with hiking and ridgeline views, and Round Valley Regional Preserve, a short drive from Knightsen, offers oak-woodland trails. Contra Loma Regional Park has a swimmable reservoir and shoreline picnic areas a short drive west. Families can also work in U-pick farms and farmers markets in nearby Brentwood and Oakley.

The Delta has a Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Summer highs near Knightsen typically run in the upper 80s to low 90s Fahrenheit, with very little rainfall from June through August and steady afternoon breezes off the water. This is peak boating and fishing season, and waterfront RV resorts on Bethel Island and the Delta Loop book up well in advance for weekends and holidays.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. Daytime temperatures sit in the 60s and 70s, wildflowers and orchard bloom run through March and April, and crowds thin noticeably after Labor Day. Winters are mild but wet, with January typically the wettest month. Tule fog can settle over the Delta on cold winter mornings and reduce visibility on Highway 4 and the levee roads. Most private Delta RV parks stay open year round, but pools, restaurants, and boat rentals often operate on reduced winter hours.

This was our second time renting from Patrick and his family. He is excellent at communicating with you and everything was a smooth process. The RV is clean, cute, and cozy and has everything you need to have a perfect trip. We had an amazing trip with lots of memories and will definitely rent from them again for our next RV adventure.

Couldn’t have asked for a better host! This was my family’s first time in a camper trailer and Patrick was able to answer all of my questions patiently. He delivered the camper right at check in and had the AC running for us which made for a very welcoming introduction to Jellystone park. I highly recommend Patrick for anyone wanting a clean and cozy rv!

How to book a campsite near Knightsen
Campgrounds closest to Knightsen are privately run, so bookings go directly through each resort rather than a central agency. Sugar Barge RV Resort and Marina, Eddo's Harbor and RV Park, Park Delta Bay, Rio Viento RV Park, and Lighthouse Marina Restaurant and Resort all take reservations by phone or through their own websites. For summer weekends, fishing tournaments, and three-day holidays, plan to lock in dates one to three months out, and longer if a big rig pull-through or waterfront site is required. State-run options in the broader Delta, such as Brannan Island State Recreation Area near Rio Vista, use ReserveCalifornia and open a six-month rolling booking window. East Bay Regional Park District sites are booked through the district's reservation system.
What to expect on arrival
Roads into the Delta narrow quickly once off Highway 4. Many access routes run on top of levees, so expect single lanes, tight turns, and posted weight limits. Reviewers note the driveway into Park Delta Bay is steep and not recommended for rigs over about 35 feet towing a car, so confirm site length and access when booking. The larger Delta resorts offer full hookups with both 30-amp and 50-amp service, but availability of 50-amp varies by loop, so verify ahead if running multiple AC units. Cell coverage is generally usable but uneven between islands. Shade is the other big variable: Park Delta Bay and similar sites along the Delta Loop have large mature trees, while exposed waterfront pads heat up quickly in summer. Bring sun shades, mosquito protection, and a full freshwater supply for any backup or boondock stop.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Knightsen, CA?
RV rental in Knightsen is affordable for a Bay Area destination, with travel trailers often starting around $95 to $135 per night and Class C motorhomes typically running $175 to $295. Because Knightsen is a small rural community in eastern Contra Costa County, you'll usually find better prices here than in Oakland or San Francisco. To score a cheap RV rental Knightsen travelers love, book midweek, aim for the shoulder seasons of March to April or October to November, and filter by Instant Book on RVezy. Many hosts in nearby Brentwood and Oakley offer multi-night discounts, so a 5-night Delta trip can be cheaper per night than a long weekend.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Knightsen%2C%20CaliforniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Knightsen?
Good news: a regular California driver's license (or any valid US/Canadian license) is all you need to rent an RV in Knightsen. There's no commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement required for any RV available on RVezy, whether you choose a campervan, travel trailer, or large Class A motorhome. You'll need to be 25 or older to be an approved driver, and ID verification happens right inside the RVezy platform when you book, so there's no DMV visit on your end. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit. Most first-timers are surprised how quickly the booking-to-pickup process moves.

Every RV rental in Knightsen booked through RVezy automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're covered from the moment you drive away. The protection plan helps cover damage to the vehicle and gives you peace of mind on Delta backroads or longer trips up to Yosemite. You choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), so you can pick the option that matches your comfort level and trip length. While it's not traditional auto insurance, it's specifically designed for peer-to-peer RV rentals and removes the biggest worry first-timers have. Take a quick walk-around video at pickup, and you'll breeze through return with zero stress.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Knightsen RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after you book. That means you can lock in an RV rental in Knightsen with confidence, even if your plans are still firming up. Exact refund amounts depend on how far ahead you cancel relative to your trip start date. You'll see the full cancellation details on your booking confirmation, and the RVezy support team is available before, during, and after your trip if anything changes. Book early for popular Delta summer weekends, then relax knowing the grace period has your back.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Knightsen RV rental?
Absolutely, and you've got plenty of options. Just filter for Pet-Friendly on RVezy to see every pet-friendly RV rental Knightsen hosts offer, from compact campervans to family-size Class C motorhomes. Many hosts charge a small pet cleaning fee (usually $25 to $75), which you'll see clearly on the listing before you book. Once you're on the road, your pup will love Round Valley Regional Preserve (about 10 miles south) and the Marsh Creek Trail running through nearby Brentwood, both leash-friendly. Antioch's Contra Loma Regional Park also welcomes leashed dogs on most trails. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet details, and pack a collapsible water bowl for those warm Delta afternoons.
ebparks.org/parks/round-valleyCan the RV be delivered to my campground or home in Knightsen?
Yes, RV delivery Knightsen renters love is widely available, and it's the easiest way to skip driving altogether. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to find hosts in Knightsen, Oakley, Brentwood, and Antioch who'll bring the RV to your driveway, a Delta marina, or directly to campgrounds like Brannan Island State Recreation Area or Lake Del Valle Regional Park. Your host will level the rig, hook up water and power, and walk you through everything from the awning to the propane stove. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $4 per mile each way, with many hosts offering free local delivery within a set radius. Delivery is gold for first-time renters and groups flying into Oakland (OAK) or San Francisco (SFO) airports.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Knightsen%2C%20CaliforniaHow far can I drive on an RV rental from Knightsen?
You can reach an enormous chunk of Northern California from Knightsen, and many hosts offer generous mileage packages (some even RV rental with unlimited mileage). Most listings include 100-150 free miles per night, with extra miles around $0.35 to $0.50 each. From Knightsen you're roughly 60 miles to San Francisco, 90 miles to Napa Valley, 75 miles to Santa Cruz beaches, 165 miles to Yosemite Valley, and about 200 miles to Lake Tahoe. A classic Knightsen RV trip loop through the Delta, Napa, and back is well under most standard mileage limits. Pro tip: if you're planning a Yosemite or Tahoe run, filter for unlimited-mileage listings and you'll save real money on a week-long adventure.
nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/driving.htmWhere should I camp with my RV near Knightsen?
You're surrounded by excellent campgrounds, all within an easy drive. The best campgrounds near Knightsen include Brannan Island State Recreation Area (about 20 minutes north near Rio Vista, with full Delta access), Del Valle Regional Park in Livermore (around 45 minutes, with showers and a swim beach), Contra Loma Regional Park in Antioch (reservoir camping and fishing), and Mount Diablo State Park's Live Oak and Junction campgrounds (about 30 miles west, with iconic Bay Area views). For longer hauls, Lodi Lake and the Sacramento Delta marinas offer waterfront RV camping Knightsen visitors enjoy. Reserve California State Parks sites up to six months ahead via ReserveCalifornia, especially for summer weekends.
reservecalifornia.com/When is the best time to visit Knightsen in an RV?
Spring (March-May) and fall (September-early November) are the sweet spots for a Knightsen RV trip. You'll get sunny days in the mid-60s to mid-80s, cool comfortable nights, blooming hills, and far fewer crowds at Delta campgrounds and Mount Diablo. Summer (June-August) gets genuinely hot here, with afternoon temperatures regularly hitting 95-100°F in the Delta, though early-morning launches on the water and shaded campgrounds make it very doable. Winter is mild (50s by day, 40s at night) and wet but rarely freezing, so RVing through the holidays is absolutely an option. Pro tip: time your trip to the Brentwood U-pick cherry season in late May or harvest season in October for an only-in-East-County experience.
weather.gov/mtr/I've never rented an RV before. Is Knightsen a good place to start?
Knightsen is a fantastic spot for first time renting an RV. The roads are wide and rural, the surrounding Delta is flat as a pancake (zero mountain passes to worry about), and freeway speeds on Highway 4 and Vasco Road are relaxed compared to the urban Bay Area. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving tips, the water system, propane, the generator, and how to set up at camp. You can also message your host any time during the trip with questions. Pro tip: pick a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental Knightsen hosts have available, and plan a short first night at Brannan Island so you can get comfortable before going farther.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/What happens if I have an issue on the road?
You're never on your own. Every Knightsen RV rental booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering tire changes, jump-starts, lockouts, towing, and mechanical breakdowns. If something goes sideways on Highway 4, near Brannan Island, or even up at Lake Tahoe, you call one number and help is dispatched. You can also reach RVezy's support team any time, and your host is usually a quick text away for questions about quirks of their specific rig. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave Knightsen, and snap a photo of your RV's VIN and license plate so dispatch can find you fast.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Knightsen RV rental to Oregon, Nevada, or other states?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most RVezy rentals from Knightsen. Popular routes include Lake Tahoe and Reno (Nevada, about 200 miles), the Oregon Coast, and southern Utah's national parks. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the specific host and protection plan, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance limitations. A favorite RV road trip from Knightsen is the Highway 1 coastal loop through Monterey, Big Sur, and Santa Cruz, then back through the Bay. Check the listing's mileage policy and let your host know your planned route during booking, so everyone's aligned.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Knightsen RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, so budgeting smart makes a big difference. Most Class C motorhomes get 8-12 MPG, travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (10-15 MPG combined), and campervans can hit 18-22 MPG. California gas typically runs higher than the national average (often $4.50-$5.50 per gallon in Contra Costa County), so a 500-mile trip in a Class C might run $200-$275 in fuel. Filling up in Brentwood or Oakley before heading out is usually cheaper than gas stations along Highway 4 closer to the Delta resorts. Pro tip: use GasBuddy to compare prices, and drive 55-60 mph to squeeze 1-2 extra MPG out of any rental.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book campgrounds near Knightsen?
For California State Parks like Brannan Island, Mount Diablo, and Lake Del Valle, book exactly six months in advance through ReserveCalifornia, the official state reservation system, especially for summer weekends and holidays which sell out within minutes. East Bay Regional Park District campgrounds (Del Valle, Contra Loma) also use ReserveCalifornia and open up six months out. For private RV parks in nearby Discovery Bay, Oakley, and Rio Vista, 2-4 weeks ahead is usually plenty outside of major holidays. Pro tip: log into ReserveCalifornia at 7:59 AM Pacific exactly six months before your check-in date with your campground and site number ready, and you'll grab the prime Delta-front spots before they vanish.
reservecalifornia.com/What are driving conditions like around Knightsen?
Driving around Knightsen is genuinely easy, which is part of why it's such a great RV launching pad. The town sits on flat Delta farmland with wide rural roads like Knightsen Avenue, Delta Road, and Sellers Avenue, and Highway 4 connects you quickly to Brentwood, Antioch, and the rest of the Bay Area. Watch for occasional Delta fog in winter mornings, strong afternoon winds in spring (especially near Sherman Island and the Antioch Bridge), and ag-truck traffic during harvest seasons. Avoid driving a large RV through downtown San Francisco or over the steep Bay Bridge approaches if possible. Pro tip: heading to Mount Diablo? Take Marsh Creek Road from Brentwood, it's far gentler than the south-side ascent and made for RVs.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Knightsen?
Campgrounds near Knightsen range from full-service resorts to rustic state park sites, so you can choose your comfort level. Brannan Island State Recreation Area offers restrooms with showers and a dump station inside the park. Del Valle Regional Park has water at sites, dump stations, and hot showers. Private parks in Discovery Bay, Rio Vista, and Lodi typically offer full hookups (30/50 amp electric, water, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. For dumping and fresh water on the fly, several Brentwood-area and Lodi truck stops have facilities open to travelers. Top off your fresh-water tank before leaving the marina, since Delta-island campgrounds occasionally have hard or sulfur-tasting water.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=487What's actually inside a typical Knightsen RV rental?
You'll find everything you need to live comfortably on the road. Most Knightsen-area motorhome rentals sleep 4 to 8 people with a queen bed, convertible dinette, and bunk or over-cab options. Expect a full kitchen (3-burner propane stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelted seating for everyone driving down Highway 4. Many newer rentals include a generator, solar, flat-screen TV, outdoor speakers, and Wi-Fi hotspot capability, which helps because cell service in parts of the Delta can be spotty. Check the listing's amenity list for the exact sleeping configuration and whether linens, kitchenware, and camp chairs are included, so you don't accidentally pack duplicates.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Knightsen%2C%20CaliforniaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in the Knightsen area offer lots of useful add-ons to make your trip easier. Common ones include linen and bedding packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs and tables, bikes, kayaks, generators with extra fuel, portable BBQs, and Starlink or Wi-Fi hotspots. Many hosts also offer delivery and setup at your destination, which is especially handy for Delta marinas or Mount Diablo campgrounds. Standard pickup is at the host's location in Knightsen, Oakley, or Brentwood, and orientations usually take 30 to 60 minutes. Mileage policies vary by listing (often 100 to 150 free miles per night), with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for an upcharge. Bundle add-ons during booking rather than at pickup, since hosts often discount packages.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Knightsen%2C%20CaliforniaHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and handled entirely through RVezy, so you never hand cash to the host. You pay your rental total (rental fee, RVezy service fee, taxes, and any add-ons) by credit card when you book. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, not actually charged, and released after a clean return with no issues. To avoid any hassle, do a thorough walk-around video at pickup and dropoff, return with the fuel and waste-tank levels noted on the listing, and stay within your mileage allowance. Use a credit card with strong purchase protection for your Knightsen RV rental and you've added another layer of security.
