Campgrounds near La Honda
La Honda sits in the redwood-covered Santa Cruz Mountains of San Mateo County, with several state park campgrounds within a short drive. The closest developed RV-accessible option is Main - Portola Redwoods State Park, a seasonal campground tucked into an old-growth redwood valley off Alpine Road. South toward the coast, Butano State Park has historically operated a quiet, fern-filled canyon campground reached via Pescadero, but the Ben Ries campground there remains closed indefinitely due to water-system damage from the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex Fire. Farther south, Big Basin Redwoods State Park has historically operated Huckleberry - Big Basin Redwoods State Park, Sempervirens - Big Basin Redwoods State Park, and Little Basin Cabins and Campground - Big Basin Redwoods State Park, but those facilities were destroyed in the same fire and remain closed during ongoing recovery.
RV renters should plan around small site footprints, no hookups, and narrow mountain access roads. At Portola Redwoods, only specific numbered sites accommodate trailers and motorhomes up to roughly 24 feet, and there is no dump station on site. Cell service is unreliable throughout the area, and there is no fuel or store in or near the park, so arrive provisioned.
Things to do near La Honda
Hiking under coast redwoods is the main draw. Portola Redwoods State Park has about 18 miles of trails along Pescadero and Fall creeks, with a strenuous out-and-back to the old-growth Peters Creek Grove. Butano State Park's trail system has reopened for day use and backpackers, with loops through redwoods, oak woodland, and chaparral, including a 9.5-mile Canyon Loop with ridgetop views. Day-use access to Big Basin Redwoods State Park is available by parking reservation and includes the reopened route to Sempervirens Falls. Pescadero State Beach, Pomponio, and San Gregorio beaches are 20 to 30 minutes west on Highway 1 for tidepooling and shoreline walks. Pescadero village adds a bakery, goat dairy, and farm stands.

The Santa Cruz Mountains have a Mediterranean climate: wet, mild winters and dry, cool-to-warm summers moderated by marine fog. Campground access reflects this. The Main campground at Portola Redwoods State Park is a seasonal operation, generally open April through October and closed November through March. Butano State Park's Ben Ries campground would normally follow a similar April through November pattern, but it is currently closed indefinitely while fire-related water-system damage is repaired, so day-use and backcountry trail camping are the only options there for now.
Late spring and early fall are the most comfortable windows: trails are open, creeks still run, and crowds are lighter than summer weekends. Summer days are warm inland but coastal fog routinely pushes over the ridges in the morning and evening, keeping temperatures cool under the canopy. Winter brings heavy rain, road washouts, and downed trees on mountain routes. Fire season runs roughly June through October, and red-flag warnings can prompt short-notice closures.

How to book
California State Park campgrounds in the area, including Main - Portola Redwoods State Park, are reserved through ReserveCalifornia, online or by phone at 1-800-444-7275. The booking window is six months in advance, and popular summer weekends can sell out at the moment the window opens. Maximum stay at Portola Redwoods is seven nights. A booking fee applies on top of the nightly rate, and additional vehicles carry a separate per-night charge. Only specific numbered sites accept trailers or motorhomes, typically up to 24 feet, so filter carefully before paying. When the park is sold out, third-party cancellation alerts can help catch turnovers. Butano State Park's Ben Ries campground is not currently bookable, so check the park's official page before counting on a site there.
What to expect on site
Portola Redwoods is a forested, dry-camping park. Expect picnic tables, food lockers, fire rings, flush toilets, and potable water spigots, but no electric, water, or sewer hookups at the sites and no on-site dump station. Coin-operated showers are available but are sometimes shut off during drought. Generators are typically allowed only during limited daytime hours, from mid-morning to early evening. Sites are densely packed in places and shaded by tall redwoods, so solar charging is unreliable and overnight temperatures run cool even in summer. Raccoons are aggressive, so all food and scented items must be stored in the metal lockers. Cell service is patchy to nonexistent, mountain access roads are narrow and winding, and poison oak is widespread along trails.
