Camping near Ladera, California
Ladera sits on the San Francisco Peninsula in San Mateo County, with quick access to the redwood-covered ridges of the Santa Cruz Mountains and the San Mateo coast. RV travelers staging out of the Peninsula have two practical patterns: park the rig at a full-hookup Bay Area RV park and day-trip to the parks, or take a smaller rig into the state-park campgrounds west of Skyline Boulevard.
For full-hookup convenience close to Ladera, Trailer Villa RV Park in Redwood City offers full-hookup sites, is big-rig accessible, and is pet-friendly. For redwood camping in the mountains, Main - Portola Redwoods State Park has a 55-site family campground, four group campsites, and a trail camp for backpackers. Butano State Park near Pescadero typically offers drive-in and walk-in sites in a redwood canyon, though the Ben Ries campground there is currently closed due to fire-related damage to the park water system. All campgrounds at Big Basin Redwoods State Park, including Huckleberry and Sempervirens, also remain closed as California State Parks rebuilds infrastructure, with no timeline announced for camping to resume.
Things to do near Ladera
The pull of the area is old-growth and second-growth coast redwood forest within an hour of the Peninsula. At Portola Redwoods State Park, families can walk short loops along Fall and Pescadero creeks, and stronger hikers can tackle the strenuous 13-mile round-trip via Bear Creek Trail to the Peters Creek loop through ancient old-growth redwoods. Butano State Park offers a quieter canyon setting with miles of trail through redwoods, ferns, and creek bottoms, with trails like the Six Bridges Trail and the longer Canyon Loop. Big Basin Redwoods State Park is open for day use on a parking-reservation basis, giving access to recovering trails and the park's iconic groves. Closer to Ladera, day trips reach Pescadero State Beach, Año Nuevo State Park for elephant seals in winter, and the Stanford and Palo Alto areas for shopping and dining.

December - February
57° / 45°F 95 mmWettest season; mountain parks limited and storms close roads
The Peninsula has a Mediterranean climate, with cool wet winters and dry warm summers. The driest, busiest stretch for mountain campgrounds is roughly May through September, when redwood canyons stay shaded and pleasant even as inland valleys heat up. Coastal fog is part of the experience in summer, particularly along the San Mateo coast and at Butano.
Seasonal closures shape planning. At Butano State Park, the Ben Ries campground is normally closed December 1 through March 31, with site-specific reservations running April 1 through November 30, though the campground is presently closed year-round pending repairs to the water system. Portola Redwoods is also seasonal: campsites are typically reservable from late spring through mid-autumn, and severe winter weather or drought can close the park. Wet-season storms can drop trees and trigger road closures on Highway 9, Highway 35, and Alpine Road, so check park status before heading out. Year-round full-hookup parks on the bay side remain open through winter.

How to book campgrounds near Ladera
California State Park campgrounds in the area use one reservation system. For camping reservations and fees, visit ReserveCalifornia.com or call 1-800-444-7275. Reservations can be made up to six months in advance, with the booking window opening at 8 a.m. Pacific time, so plan ahead to secure a spot. Summer weekends at Portola Redwoods fill quickly, especially after the rolling six-month window opens. Visitors without reservations can self-register for one night only into an unreserved campsite if available. Big Basin currently requires a parking reservation for day use through ReserveCalifornia, and camping is not bookable. Private parks like Trailer Villa RV Park take direct bookings through the operator and tend to be most flexible midweek and in the shoulder seasons.
What to expect when camping near Ladera
RV length and hookups are the key constraints. State-park campgrounds in this corner of the Santa Cruz Mountains do not offer hookups and limit rig size: at Portola Redwoods, RVs up to 24 feet and trailers up to 21 feet are allowed in select sites, and Butano has similar limits. Mountain roads into Big Basin and the surrounding parks are narrow and winding, so plan routes carefully with a larger rig. Cell service is unreliable to nonexistent inside the parks, so download maps offline and let someone know your plans. Bring layers for cool redwood nights even in summer, and store all food and scented items in the provided lockers because raccoons and other wildlife are active throughout the area.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Ladera, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Ladera, CA?
RV rental in Ladera is a smart value compared to Peninsula hotel rates, especially when you split costs with family or friends. Expect roughly $90 to $175 per night for travel trailers, $150 to $250 for Class C motorhomes, and $250 to $450 for larger Class A rigs. Because Ladera sits in the high-demand Peninsula corridor near Stanford and Sand Hill Road, booking 6 to 8 weeks ahead helps secure the best pricing. To save on your Ladera RV trip, travel Sunday through Thursday, look for hosts offering weekly discounts, and use the price filter to find cheap RV rental in Ladera options. Many Peninsula hosts include generators or solar, which can reduce reliance on paid campground hookups.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ladera%2C%20CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Ladera?
Good news: a regular California driver's license (or any valid US/Canadian license) is all you need to rent an RV in Ladera, even for most Class A motorhomes. The California DMV does not require a commercial license or special endorsement for personal RVs under 40 feet and under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every rig on RVezy. Approved RVezy drivers must be 25 or older, and identity verification happens right through the platform during booking, no paperwork trips required. Visiting from overseas? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license. Then you're free to point the wheels toward Big Sur, Yosemite, or wherever your California road trip leads.

You can book your Ladera RV trip with confidence because RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a full refund grace period right after booking. If plans shift in that first window after you confirm, you're protected. Beyond that, refund eligibility depends on how close you are to your trip start date, with clear tiers explained at checkout and in your booking confirmation. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook. Our support team is reachable seven days a week, so go ahead and lock in that summer Yosemite week or Big Sur weekend knowing you have a safety net.

Plenty of Peninsula hosts welcome dogs, and some even include perks like pet beds or post-trip cleaning included. Half Moon Bay State Beach (about 35 minutes west) permits dogs on leash, and the Wunderlich Park area is a hit too. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee, then you and your four-legged co-pilot are good to go.
openspace.org/preserves/windy-hillCan the RV be delivered to me in Ladera?
Yes, RV delivery in Ladera is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if you'd rather skip driving a big rig through Alpine Road's twists. Many Peninsula hosts will deliver and set up the motorhome right at your campground, driveway, or a Portola Valley trailhead parking lot, then walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter when searching on RVezy, message the host to confirm the delivery address and any mileage fee, and you'll have your campervan rental Ladera ready to roll without the stress of driving an unfamiliar rig out of town.
