Campgrounds near Lafayette, California
Lafayette sits in the East Bay hills of Contra Costa County, roughly twenty minutes east of Oakland and within easy reach of San Francisco, Napa Valley, and the Carquinez Strait. The closest developed camping is at Mount Diablo State Park, which rises directly southeast of the city. Live Oak - Mt Diablo State Park sits about a mile above the South Gate entrance and is the lowest-elevation drive-in campground in the park, with sites suitable for tent campers and smaller RVs and trailers. North of Lafayette via I-680 and I-780, Benicia State Recreational Area offers three self-contained enroute sites along the Carquinez Strait. For full-hookup RV camping, travelers typically head to Vallejo or San Francisco. Tradewinds RV Park in Vallejo provides full hookups close to the ferry to San Francisco, Vallejo RV Park serves as another I-80 corridor option, and Candlestick RV Park sits on the southern edge of San Francisco. The mix means renters can pick between state-park quiet and serviced urban basecamps. Elevations, road conditions, and rig length limits vary widely between these options, so confirm site dimensions before booking.
Things to do near Lafayette
Mount Diablo dominates the local landscape, with a summit road, the Summit Visitor Center, and trails reaching the Rock City sandstone formations, Sentinel Rock, and the Wind Caves. The view from the summit can extend more than 100 miles on clear days. Cyclists ride the North Gate and South Gate roads, and Mitchell Canyon on the north side is known for spring wildflowers. Closer to the bay, Benicia State Recreational Area offers flat road and bike paths along tidal marsh, with strong birdwatching for herons, egrets, and rails. Day trips from the Vallejo or San Francisco RV parks include the Vallejo ferry to San Francisco, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, Napa Valley wineries, Muir Woods, and the Golden Gate Bridge. Families often pair a Mount Diablo hike with a Rock City scramble and an ice cream stop in downtown Lafayette or Walnut Creek.

The Lafayette area has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Spring, from March through May, is the most popular time to camp at Mount Diablo. Hills turn green, wildflowers peak in Mitchell Canyon, and daytime temperatures are comfortable for hiking. Note that the Castle Rock and Knobcone Point areas of Mount Diablo State Park close annually from February 1 through July 31 to protect peregrine falcon nesting habitat.
Summer is hot and dry inland, with afternoon highs frequently in the upper 70s and 80s in town and hotter on the mountain's lower slopes. Fire danger rises sharply, and the park can close due to extreme fire danger on short notice; campers are encouraged to confirm conditions with the park before arrival. Fall brings cooler nights, clearer air, and lighter crowds. Winter is the wettest season, with January typically the rainiest month, and storms can occasionally close roads on Mount Diablo. The East Bay parks and bayfront RV parks remain open year-round, and coastal fog is common near the bay even in summer.

How to book
Mount Diablo State Park campgrounds, including Live Oak - Mt Diablo State Park, are reserved through ReserveCalifornia. Reservations open up to six months in advance, and weekends in spring and fall fill quickly, so book early or watch for cancellations on Friday and Saturday mornings. Trailers and motorhomes are limited to 20 feet, and there are no hookups or dump stations inside the park. Benicia State Recreational Area offers three enroute sites for fully self-contained motorhomes and trailers on a first-come, first-served basis, with no reservations accepted and no tents permitted; arrival is after 4 p.m. and departure by 9 a.m. Private parks book directly: Tradewinds RV Park and Vallejo RV Park take reservations by phone or website, and Candlestick RV Park accepts daily, weekly, and monthly stays. Confirm rig length, slide-out clearance, and pet policies when booking, especially for big-rig travelers heading into the urban San Francisco parks.
What to expect
Expect a clear split between rustic state-park camping and serviced private RV parks. Live Oak - Mt Diablo State Park has picnic tables, fire rings, restrooms, and free showers when water is available, but no hookups and no dump station, so plan to arrive with full tanks and bring drinking water. Sites are close together, gates close at sunset, and cell service on the mountain is limited. Benicia State Recreational Area is essentially an overnight RV pull-in with a picnic table and minimal services; freeway noise is audible. Tradewinds RV Park, Vallejo RV Park, and Candlestick RV Park provide full hookups, laundry, and showers, with quick access to I-80, I-780, or US-101. Urban surroundings vary block by block, so review recent guest feedback before booking. Wildlife at Mount Diablo can include deer, wild turkeys, raccoons, and rattlesnakes in warmer months; food storage discipline matters.
