Los Altos Hills camping overview
Los Altos Hills sits on the San Francisco Peninsula in Santa Clara County, with the Santa Cruz Mountains rising to the west. The town itself is residential and has no public campgrounds, so RV travelers typically base out of nearby Peninsula RV parks or head into the coastal redwood parks within an hour's drive. Trailer Villa RV Park in Redwood City is the closest full-hookup option, a short drive north on US-101, and works well as a paved base camp for visiting Stanford, San Francisco, and South Bay tech-corridor attractions.
For a forest experience, the Santa Cruz Mountains hold the closest state-park campgrounds. Portola Redwoods State Park has a 55-site family campground plus group sites and backpacker camps. Big Basin Redwoods was 97 percent burned by the CZU Lightning Complex Fire in August 2020, which destroyed nearly every structure in the park. Recovery is ongoing, and at present all Big Basin campgrounds, including Huckleberry, Sempervirens, and Little Basin Cabins and Campground, remain closed while California State Parks rebuilds. Day-use access to Big Basin is available by parking reservation only.
Things to do near Los Altos Hills
Day trips from a Los Altos Hills base cover a wide range. The Peninsula offers Stanford University, downtown Palo Alto, and bayfront trails at the Baylands. Drive west over Skyline Boulevard for redwood hikes, ocean overlooks, and the small towns of La Honda and Pescadero.
Portola Redwoods State Park protects old-growth coast redwoods in a shaded canyon along Peters and Pescadero Creeks, with more than 18 miles of trails connecting to neighboring parklands. At Big Basin, day-use visitors can access the short Redwood Loop near the historic headquarters area and selected trails that have been cleared and reopened, including portions of the Skyline-to-Sea Trail. Camping inside Big Basin itself, including the Huckleberry, Sempervirens, and Little Basin sites, is not currently available.

The Bay Area has a Mediterranean climate, with wet winters and dry summers. Rainfall is sparse from May through October, and the summer months of June, July, and August normally bring only a fraction of an inch. That makes late spring through early fall the most reliable window for camping, with warm inland days and cool coastal nights.
State-park sites in the Santa Cruz Mountains operate seasonally. The Portola Redwoods campground is generally open April through October, offering 55 family campsites, four group camps, and hike-and-bike sites. Slate Creek Trail Camp, a backpacking camp with six sites within Portola Redwoods, is open April 1 to November 30. Summer weekends book out months ahead. Fall offers thinner crowds and warm days but shorter daylight, while winter brings cool rain, muddy trails, and occasional road closures in the mountains. Wildfire risk peaks in late summer and early fall and can trigger short-notice closures.

How to book campgrounds near Los Altos Hills
California State Parks campgrounds use a single statewide system. Reservations for standard family sites are handled through ReserveCalifornia, online at reservecalifornia.com or by phone at 1-800-444-7275. Bookings open on a rolling six-month window, with new dates released daily at 8 a.m. Pacific time. Summer weekends at Portola Redwoods typically sell out the moment that window opens, so logging in early is essential.
Groups of 20 or more may reserve up to a year in advance at participating parks. All Big Basin Redwoods campgrounds, including Huckleberry, Sempervirens, and Little Basin Cabins and Campground, are currently closed and not accepting camping reservations while the park rebuilds after the CZU fire. Private parks such as Trailer Villa RV Park take direct bookings through their own office. RV renters should confirm rig length restrictions before booking a forest site.
What to expect at campgrounds near Los Altos Hills
Expect two very different experiences depending on where the rig is parked. Peninsula RV parks are paved, level, and full-hookup, with easy freeway access. Forest sites in the Santa Cruz Mountains are dry camping under tall trees, with narrow access roads and tight turns.
At Portola Redwoods, motorhomes up to 24 feet and trailers up to 21 feet are allowed in a handful of designated sites, with no hookups and no dump station. The main campground has flush toilets, drinking water, pay showers, a campfire center, a camp host, and a weekend visitor center. Each site has a picnic table, fire ring, and bear-proof food locker. Cell service is limited in the redwoods, and fog often rolls in overnight, even on hot summer days. Big Basin's Huckleberry, Sempervirens, and Little Basin campgrounds remain closed indefinitely while infrastructure is rebuilt.
