Campgrounds near Los Gatos
Los Gatos sits at the northern edge of the Santa Cruz Mountains, putting RV travelers within a short drive of redwood-forest campgrounds along Highway 17 and the San Lorenzo Valley. Most options cluster on the coastal side of the range, near Felton, Ben Lomond, and Scotts Valley, roughly 20 to 30 miles from town. Private RV parks in the area include Santa Cruz Ranch RV Resort, Redwood Resort RV Park and Campground, Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort, and Cotillion Gardens RV Park, which generally offer full hookups, dump stations, and sites geared to longer rigs.
For a public-land experience, the 107-site campground at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Campground sits in a shady pine and oak forest, about a two-mile walk or five-minute drive from the Redwood Grove Loop Trail. The campground has no hookups, and maximum trailer length is 31 feet while maximum camper or motorhome length is 35 feet, so very large rigs are better suited to the private resorts. The state-park campground has been closed for ADA infrastructure upgrades, with reopening anticipated in spring 2026; travelers should confirm status with California State Parks before planning a trip.
Things to do near Los Gatos
Downtown Los Gatos has walkable shops, parks, and the Los Gatos Creek Trail, which connects to Vasona Lake County Park for paddleboating and picnics. From any of the San Lorenzo Valley campgrounds, visitors are within reach of the redwoods and Santa Cruz beaches.
The Redwood Grove Loop Trail at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park is a 0.8-mile self-guided walk through ancient redwoods, some about 1,500 years old and up to 277 feet tall. Roaring Camp Railroad runs steam-train excursions through the redwood forest, a favorite with kids. The San Lorenzo River's Garden of Eden swimming hole draws summer swimmers, and the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is about a 30-minute drive from most valley campgrounds.

The Santa Cruz Mountains have a Mediterranean climate, so the camping calendar splits cleanly between a dry summer and a wet winter. Los Gatos has a distinct dry season from May through October, which is also when regional campgrounds run at full capacity. Comfortable temperatures make summer camping popular, and reservations should be made well ahead during the busy stretch between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Spring brings green hillsides and creek flows, with cool nights and occasional rain into May. Fall is a strong shoulder season, with warm afternoons, dry trails, and lighter crowds after Labor Day. Winter is the wettest stretch, and trips should be planned around storm windows. December is the wettest month, averaging roughly 115 mm of precipitation over about 12 rainy days, which can soak low-lying sites along the San Lorenzo River. The Henry Cowell campground has been closed for ADA upgrades, so winter and early-spring visitors should check status with California State Parks or plan on a private RV park.

How to book a campsite
Public sites and private resorts use different systems, so plan early for both. For Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park Campground, reservations are made through ReserveCalifornia at (800) 444-7275 or on the ReserveCalifornia website. The system uses a rolling window, with inventory opening six months in advance from the current date at 8 a.m. Pacific time, and summer weekends often book out the moment the window opens.
Reservations can be modified or cancelled by phone or through the online portal, subject to ReserveCalifornia cancellation fees. Santa Cruz Ranch RV Resort, Redwood Resort RV Park and Campground, Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort, and Cotillion Gardens RV Park book directly through their own websites or by phone, with shorter notice often available midweek.
What to expect
Expect winding two-lane roads through the mountains. Highway 17 between Los Gatos and Scotts Valley is steep and tightly curved, and large rigs should travel it during off-peak hours. Cell service drops in the canyons, so download maps before leaving town.
Sites in the redwoods are heavily shaded, which keeps temperatures cool but limits solar charging. The Henry Cowell campground has flush toilets, coin-operated hot showers (bring quarters), picnic tables, fire rings, and food lockers at each site, and accepts both tents and RVs within length limits. Cell service can be present at individual sites but is unreliable on the main roads. Private resorts in the San Lorenzo Valley generally offer full hookups, laundry, and Wi-Fi, with tighter site spacing than the state park.

California state park sites open on ReserveCalifornia up to six months before your arrival date, county park sites are booked through Santa Clara County Parks, and private resorts like Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort take reservations directly on their website. For last-minute trips, look for midweek openings or check private resorts first.
reservecalifornia.com/Are there any special driving considerations for RVs in the Los Gatos area?

Highway 17 between Los Gatos and Santa Cruz is steep and winding with tight curves, so drive slowly, use lower gears on descents, and avoid commute hours. Downtown Los Gatos has narrow streets and limited parking that are not ideal for larger Class A or Class C motorhomes, so park on the outskirts or have your RV delivered to your campground.
