Campgrounds near Loyola, California
Loyola is an unincorporated community on the southwestern edge of Los Altos in Santa Clara County, sitting at the base of the Santa Cruz Mountains. RV travelers use it as a launch point because the redwood parks and Pacific coast are within an hour's drive, yet the Peninsula's services, fuel, and grocery stops remain close at hand.
The closest developed RV-friendly option is Trailer Villa RV Park in Redwood City, a full-hookup park along the Bayshore corridor that accepts larger rigs. For a redwood setting, Main - Portola Redwoods State Park sits roughly an hour southwest off Alpine Road, with 55 family sites suitable for trailers up to 21 feet and motorhomes up to 24 feet, and no hookups. Further south near Boulder Creek, Big Basin Redwoods State Park is still rebuilding after the CZU Lightning Complex Fire. Huckleberry - Big Basin Redwoods State Park, Sempervirens - Big Basin Redwoods State Park, and Little Basin Cabins and Campground - Big Basin Redwoods State Park remain affected by ongoing recovery, so renters should check current status on the park website before planning a stay.
Things to do near Loyola
The area is built around redwood hiking, coastal day trips, and town stops. Eighteen miles of trails follow meandering creeks at Portola Redwoods, where coast redwoods stand tall among ferns and huckleberries. At Big Basin, a growing network of trails and fire roads has reopened as recovery continues, giving day visitors access to old-growth groves and ridge views. From Loyola, Highway 17 leads to Santa Cruz beaches and the boardwalk in under an hour, and Highway 1 north of Santa Cruz reaches Waddell Beach and the coastal Rancho del Oso side of Big Basin. Closer in, Stanford, downtown Los Altos, and the local foothill preserves give families low-effort half-day options. Castle Rock State Park, just up Highway 35, adds sandstone formations and ridge-top views suitable for older kids.

The Bay Area runs on a Mediterranean rhythm: wet winters and dry summers. From roughly November through March, Pacific storms push rain into the Santa Cruz Mountains, and the access roads to redwood parks can flood, slide, or close briefly. Mountain routes to Portola Redwoods are narrow and twisting, and the park itself notes that cell reception inside the park is essentially nonexistent. The Portola Redwoods campground generally operates on a seasonal basis from April through October, with 55 family campsites, four group camps, and four hike-and-bike sites; it closes through the wet winter months.
Spring brings creek flow and wildflowers, with cool nights into May. Summer is the peak booking window: warm days inland, cool fog along the coast, and very low rainfall. Late summer and early fall are the highest wildfire-risk weeks in this region, and the CZU Lightning Complex Fire that closed Big Basin ignited in mid-August. RV travelers should monitor Cal Fire alerts and park advisories before travel.

How to book campgrounds in the area
California State Park sites are booked through ReserveCalifornia. Reservations can be made online at www.reservecalifornia.com or by phone at 1-800-444-7275, and a booking fee applies. The online system is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and reservations can be made up to six months in advance on a rolling window, with new dates opening daily at 8 a.m. Pacific time. Popular summer weekends at redwood parks often sell out within minutes of the window opening, so set a reminder and be ready to book the moment dates release.
Little Basin Cabins and Campground - Big Basin Redwoods State Park is operated under a concession partnership and requires advance reservations. Trailer Villa RV Park books directly through the operator. For Big Basin's main area, check the parks.ca.gov status page before booking, since campground access remains limited following the CZU fire.
What to expect on the ground
Expect dry camping at the redwood sites. Portola Redwoods does not offer hookups, there is no gasoline at or near the park, and there is no store inside the park. Fuel up and provision in Los Altos, Palo Alto, or Boulder Creek before heading in. Cell coverage is poor to nonexistent inside the parks, so download maps and reservations in advance. Roads into Portola and Big Basin are steep and narrow, with tight switchbacks and length limits, so confirm rig dimensions against site limits before booking.
Nights are cool year-round under the redwood canopy, even in July. Bear-resistant food lockers are provided at state-park sites, fires are restricted to provided rings when conditions allow, and rangers enforce quiet hours. Trailer Villa, by contrast, is an urban full-hookup park with paved pads, laundry, and easy freeway access rather than a forest setting.

rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat happens if I need to cancel my Loyola RV trip?
Plans change, and RVezy makes it low-risk to book your Loyola RV trip. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and the refund you receive depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date. If the host cancels, you are eligible for a full refund or travel credit. If you need to adjust dates, message your host first to see if a change can be made, then contact RVezy support to walk through your options. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Loyola RV rental?
Absolutely, plenty of pet-friendly RV rental Loyola options are just a filter click away on RVezy, where you can sort listings to show only rigs that welcome dogs. Many Loyola hosts charge a small pet fee (typically $25 to $75 per trip) and may ask you to keep pets off the furniture, which they will explain at pickup. Once on the road, your pup will love Rancho San Antonio County Park's leashed trails nearby, Half Moon Bay's dog-friendly beaches about 35 minutes west, and pet-friendly campgrounds like Costanoa near Pescadero. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet rules and ask about local dog-friendly hikes they recommend.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Loyola%2C%20CaliforniaCan the RV be delivered to me in Loyola?
Yes, RV delivery Loyola is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game changer if you are nervous about driving a big rig through Silicon Valley traffic. Many Loyola area hosts will deliver the RV to your driveway, a nearby campground, or even a trailhead, then handle setup, hookups, and a full walkthrough so you start your trip stress-free. Delivery fees usually depend on distance and average $2 to $4 per mile from the host's location. To book it, use the Delivery filter when you search, or message the host directly before booking. It is the easiest way to do a first time RV rental.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Loyola%2C%20CaliforniaHow far can I drive on my Loyola RV trip?
You have plenty of range for an epic Loyola RV trip, and some hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage so you can roam without watching the odometer. Most Loyola listings include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with additional miles at roughly $0.35 to $0.45 each. From Loyola, Santa Cruz beaches are just 35 miles south, Yosemite Valley sits about 185 miles east, Lake Tahoe is around 235 miles northeast, and Big Sur's Bixby Bridge is 130 miles down the coast. Pro tip: if you are planning a long loop through Yosemite and Tahoe, filter for unlimited mileage listings or negotiate a higher mileage package with your host upfront.
nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/driving.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Loyola?
You are spoiled for choice on best campgrounds near Loyola, with redwoods, beaches, and bay views all within an hour. Top picks include Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort in Felton (full hookups along the San Lorenzo River, about 45 minutes south), Sanborn County Park in Saratoga (forested sites just 20 minutes away), Half Moon Bay State Beach (oceanfront sites about 40 minutes west on Highway 92), Costanoa KOA in Pescadero (luxury coastal camping about an hour south), and Joseph D. Grant County Park east of San Jose for quiet hill country sites. RV camping Loyola travelers often pair a coastal night with a redwood night for the perfect Bay Area weekend.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=531When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Loyola?
Loyola's Mediterranean climate makes RV travel genuinely year round, but the sweet spot is April through June and September through early November, when daytime highs sit in the 65 to 78 F range, evenings are crisp, and the summer fog along the coast is lighter. July and August are warm inland (often 80 to 90 F in Loyola) but bring famous coastal fog and crowded campgrounds, while December through March is the rainy season with greener hills, fewer crowds, and great deals on cheap RV rental Loyola listings. Pro tip: book a late September trip to catch warm Santa Cruz beach days and uncrowded Yosemite waterfalls before the fall rains begin.
weather.gov/mtr/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You will do great, and first time renting an RV from Loyola is easier than it looks. Every RVezy host provides a full pickup walkthrough covering driving tips, slide-outs, water, propane, generator, and dump station basics, and you can text them anytime during your trip with questions. For your first motorhome rental Loyola adventure, pick a Class C or campervan (under 25 feet) for easy maneuvering, avoid downtown San Francisco and narrow Santa Cruz Mountain roads like Highway 9 until you are comfortable, and stick to Highway 101, Interstate 280, or Highway 1 north of Half Moon Bay. Better yet, book delivery so the RV is already parked and set up when you arrive.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/What if something goes wrong on the road?
You are never on your own. Every Loyola RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical breakdowns whether you are on Highway 17 over the Santa Cruz Mountains or up near Tahoe. Your host is also a phone call or message away for quick questions about appliances, slide-outs, or hookups, and RVezy customer support is reachable before, during, and after every trip. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number and the RV's VIN to your phone before leaving Loyola in case cell service drops in the redwoods.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Loyola RV rental on a cross-country or cross-border road trip?
Yes, an RV road trip from Loyola can absolutely cross state lines, and many guests head north to Oregon's Crater Lake, east to Utah's national parks, or south to San Diego with no issues. Travel into Canada may be allowed on some Loyola listings depending on the host and the protection package, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend across that border. Popular multi-state loops from Loyola include the Pacific Coast Highway to Los Angeles (380 miles), the Eastern Sierra loop through Mammoth Lakes (300 miles), and Crater Lake via Redwood Highway (450 miles).
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much will fuel cost on my Loyola RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable in your Loyola RV budget, but it is easy to plan for. California gas prices typically run $4.50 to $5.50 per gallon, with diesel slightly higher, and Loyola sits in one of the pricier zones in the state. Expect 7 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG) for a Class C motorhome, 10 to 14 MPG for a campervan, and 12 to 18 MPG for an SUV towing a travel trailer. A 500 mile loop to Yosemite and back in a Class C might burn around 60 gallons, or roughly $300 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Tracy or Manteca on the way to the Sierras, where prices drop 30 to 60 cents per gallon compared to Silicon Valley stations.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-gasoline-data-facts-and-statisticsHow far in advance should I book a campground near Loyola?
Book early and you will lock in the good spots. California state parks like Big Basin Redwoods, Half Moon Bay State Beach, and Henry Cowell Redwoods release reservations up to six months in advance through ReserveCalifornia, and summer weekends sell out within minutes of opening. For Yosemite's Upper Pines or Lower Pines, use Recreation.gov five months ahead at 7 a.m. Pacific. Private RV parks like Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort and Costanoa KOA usually have more flexibility, especially midweek. Pro tip: if you strike out on weekend reservations, target a Sunday-through-Thursday Loyola RV trip and you will often find availability at top-tier coastal and redwood campgrounds with zero stress.
reservecalifornia.com/What are driving conditions like around Loyola?
Driving an RV around Loyola is very manageable once you know the local quirks. Interstate 280 and Highway 101 are wide, smooth, and ideal for any size rig, while Highway 17 over the Santa Cruz Mountains is curvy and narrow and best taken slowly in the right lane. Avoid El Monte Road and the tight residential streets of Los Altos Hills with anything over 25 feet. Traffic is heaviest weekdays from 7 to 10 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m., so plan pickups and departures outside those windows. Watch for low clearances under bridges in San Francisco (some under 11 feet) and skip downtown entirely. Coastal fog along Highway 1 can be thick in summer mornings, so use low beams and take it easy.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Loyola?
Bay Area campgrounds offer a wide range of amenities, so you can match the experience to your group. Full-hookup parks like Santa Cruz Redwoods RV Resort and Trailer Villa in Redwood City provide water, 30/50 amp electric, sewer, Wi-Fi, and laundry, while California state parks such as Half Moon Bay and Sunset State Beach typically offer water and flush toilets but no sewer hookups. For dump stations and potable water fill-ups near Loyola, head to Trailer Villa in Redwood City or the Coyote Point dump station in San Mateo. Most parks have hot showers, picnic tables, and fire rings. Pro tip: pack a 25 foot drinking water hose and a 90 degree elbow, since some older Bay Area sites have awkward spigot angles.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=29638What is inside a typical RV rental in Loyola?
Loyola RV rentals come ready to roll. A typical Class C motorhome rental Loyola sleeps 4 to 6 with a queen bed over the cab, dinette and sofa conversions, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a wet bath with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning, furnace, and a generator for off-grid power. Most include seatbelts for everyone sleeping aboard, a flat-screen TV, and often Wi-Fi or a cell signal booster. Campervans are simpler, with a bed, mini fridge, and small kitchen, perfect for a coastal solo adventure. Travel trailers vary from compact teardrops to 30 foot bunkhouse layouts. Check each listing's amenities list and message the host with any must-haves, like a coffee maker or extra bedding.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/seat-beltsWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my Loyola RV rental?
Loyola hosts offer plenty of add-ons to make your trip easier. Common extras include kitchen kits ($25 to $50), bedding and towel packages ($30 to $75), camping chairs and tables ($15 to $30), portable BBQs, generators, bike racks, surfboard mounts (great for Santa Cruz runs), and Starlink Wi-Fi for remote work. Pickup and drop-off are usually at the host's location in or near Loyola, Los Altos, Mountain View, or Sunnyvale, with delivery available for a fee. Each listing shows its mileage policy upfront, typically 100 to 150 miles per night with paid overage, and many hosts offer discounted mileage packages for longer trips. Pro tip: book add-ons during checkout instead of at pickup so the host has time to prep everything.
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/legal-truck-accessHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment for your RV rental in Loyola is simple and secure through the RVezy platform, so no cash or checks change hands with the host. You pay the rental total, taxes, fees, and chosen protection plan at booking with a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment and is released after the trip assuming no damage or extra cleaning is required. To avoid issues, take date-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at pickup and dropoff, return it with the same fuel level, and empty the tanks if your agreement requires it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs Loyola a good base for a family RV trip in California?
Loyola is one of the best launch points in California for a family RV trip, with beaches, redwoods, mountains, and theme parks all within a couple hours. From your Loyola pickup you can be in Santa Cruz building sandcastles at Natural Bridges State Beach in 40 minutes, exploring giant trees at Big Basin Redwoods in an hour, riding the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk by dinner, or watching otters at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in 75 minutes. Yosemite is a doable 3.5 hour drive, and Great America in Santa Clara is 20 minutes north. Pro tip: book a Class C with bunk beds plus a host who offers delivery, and your family RV trip Loyola adventure starts the moment you arrive, no setup stress required.
