Camping near Marin City, California
Marin City sits just north of the Golden Gate Bridge in southern Marin County, putting RV travelers within minutes of Sausalito, the Marin Headlands, Muir Woods, and Mount Tamalpais State Park. The town itself is compact, but it works well as a base for exploring the North Bay and reaching San Francisco without driving an RV across the bridge.
Private RV options closest to town include Golden Gate Trailer Park and Marin Park, both within the immediate area, and Marin RV Park nearby. South of the Golden Gate, Candlestick RV Park and Treasure Island MH and RV Park offer sites on the San Francisco side of the bay, useful for travelers wanting easy access to the city.
Public camping in the surrounding hills is mostly tent-oriented. Mount Tamalpais State Park has several walk-in and environmental campgrounds, and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area manages additional sites in the Marin Headlands. RV travelers generally stay at private parks and day-trip into the public lands.
Things to do near Marin City
Hike the Steep Ravine Trail along Webb Creek or visit nearby Muir Woods National Monument to see old-growth redwoods, then head to Stinson Beach for swimming and sunsets. The Marin Headlands offer coastal trails, historic gun batteries, and the iconic view back across the Golden Gate Bridge. Mount Tamalpais State Park has dozens of miles of trails, including the Matt Davis Trail, the Dipsea Trail, and the Steep Ravine Trail. Sausalito, a short drive south, has a walkable waterfront, ferries to San Francisco, and bike rentals along the bay path. Families can spend a half day at the Bay Area Discovery Museum at Fort Baker, then circle back for tidepooling at Rodeo Beach. Whale watching from coastal overlooks is common in winter and spring.

The Marin coast follows a Mediterranean pattern: wet winters, dry summers, and persistent marine fog along the headlands. Inland valleys can run warm in summer, while coastal Marin City stays cooler, with summer fog often burning off by afternoon. Fall and winter days are mild, with highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s.
Late spring through early fall is the most popular window. Trails are dry, beaches are accessible, and roads through the headlands are clear. Whales are often spotted from coastal overlooks in winter and spring, and spring brings waterfalls and wildflowers. Winter storms can bring heavy rain, road washouts on Highway 1, and temporary closures on Mount Tam.
Fire restrictions tighten in late summer and fall. Check current Red Flag warnings before any trip involving open flames, and verify that campground fire rings are in use. Private RV parks generally operate year-round, while some public campsites and cabins have seasonal limits.

When my prior host backed out and canceled on me the day of (There was no communication up til 48hrs before trip, and stopped again the morning of. I reached out for clarification and location, no response! Moments later Rveezy tells me the host is no longer comfortable with accommodating us) Evgeniy not only responed within 5min of me reachout out, but had us out and on the road to enjoy out trip within an hour. The vehicle is perfect, clean and easy to function. We had never driven or worked an RV before but his quick rundown and eargeness to answer any questions helped put out minds at ease. He is so kind, professonal, and absolutely Amazing 🤩. We will definitely rent from him again despite our extra charges for not having time to thoroughly clean out and fill up; but that was a very small price to pay for what we would have missed if he hadn't come to help us out of a pickle. How to book campgrounds near Marin City
Private RV parks in and around Marin City, including Golden Gate Trailer Park, Marin Park, and Marin RV Park, are typically booked directly with the property by phone or website. Long-stay demand is high in this area, so call ahead even in shoulder seasons. South of the bridge, Candlestick RV Park and Treasure Island MH and RV Park also take direct reservations.
For public land, California State Parks uses ReserveCalifornia. Sites and environmental campsites at Mount Tamalpais may be booked from 2 days up to 6 months prior to the arrival date on a rolling daily window, with inventory released at 8 a.m. Pacific. Steep Ravine Cabins use a separate lottery-style reservation drawing that lets visitors apply up to eight months in advance, with drawings conducted seven months ahead of the reservation dates. First-come, first-served camping is available at Pantoll and Bootjack campgrounds, but these are walk-in tent sites and do not accommodate RVs.
What to expect
Roads in this area are narrow and winding once you leave Highway 101. Highway 1 over Mount Tam to Stinson Beach has tight curves and pullouts that are not friendly to longer rigs, so check length limits before committing to a route. Many Marin neighborhoods restrict overnight RV parking, and the Golden Gate Bridge has height and lane considerations for taller vehicles.
Expect cool nights even in summer. Coastal fog rolls in most afternoons, and temperatures can swing notably between a foggy morning at the coast and a sunny ridge inland. Pack layers. Pets are not allowed at Steep Ravine, and dog access on Mount Tam trails is limited, so plan dog-friendly hikes in the Marin Municipal Water District lands or GGNRA areas that permit leashed pets. Cell coverage is generally solid near town and patchy in the canyons.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Marin City?
RV rental in Marin City is more affordable than you might expect for the Bay Area. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $95 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run $175 to $275, and larger Class A rigs sit at $250 to $400 nightly. Campervans (Class B) often hit a sweet spot near $125 to $200 and are perfect for navigating Marin's narrow coastal roads. Looking for a cheap RV rental Marin City option? Book midweek, travel in the shoulder seasons of March, April, October or November, and filter by smaller travel trailers. Pro tip: many Marin City hosts offer multi-night discounts of 10 to 20 percent for stays of 5+ nights, which is ideal for a Point Reyes or wine country loop.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Marin%20City%2C%20CaliforniaWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Marin City, California?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Marin City. California does not require a special RV license or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for any motorhome or trailer you'll find on RVezy, including Class A coaches up to 40 feet. You just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Pair your home license with an International Driving Permit (IDP) before you fly in. That's it. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly they're behind the wheel and crossing the Golden Gate Bridge headed for Stinson Beach.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside assistance comes with my Marin City RV rental?
Every RV rental in Marin City booked through RVezy includes a protection package and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on the redwoods and not the what-ifs. The protection package covers most damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level (Standard, Premium, or Peace of Mind) at checkout based on how much extra cushion you want. While it isn't auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection. If you get a flat on Highway 1 near Muir Beach or need a battery jump at the Marin Park gates, one phone call gets help dispatched. Pro tip: pick the higher tier if it's your first time renting an RV, the extra peace of mind is worth it.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if I need to cancel my Marin City RV trip?
Booking is low risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation (not the host), and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. After that, your refund depends on how far out from your trip you cancel and the circumstances, with extra flexibility built in for things like natural disasters, wildfire closures on Highway 1, or major weather events that affect Marin County travel. If your host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds you in full or in RVezy credits with no penalty. You can review the full cancellation details on RVezy's website before you confirm. Pro tip: book early to secure the best Marin City rigs for summer, knowing you have that initial grace window to change your mind.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Marin City RV trip?
Absolutely, and Marin is one of the most dog-friendly corners of California. Many hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Marin City options, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see them instantly. Once you're rolling, dogs are welcome on leash at Samuel P. Taylor State Park campground and the Cross Marin Trail, in the Marin Headlands on Rodeo Beach, and on the Dias Ridge Trail at Mount Tamalpais. Muir Beach is also leash-friendly. Heads up: dogs are not allowed on most Mount Tam single-track trails or inside Muir Woods National Monument. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee (typically $10 to $25 per night) and you're set for a tail-wagging Marin County RV trip.
nps.gov/goga/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to me in Marin City?
Yes, RV delivery Marin City is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially if you're flying into San Francisco International Airport (SFO) or Oakland International Airport (OAK) and don't want to drive the rig yourself. Many local hosts will deliver directly to your campsite at Marin Park in Greenbrae, Olema Campground near Point Reyes, the San Francisco North/Petaluma KOA, or even your Airbnb driveway in Sausalito or Mill Valley. They'll level the rig, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees usually range from $2 to $5 per mile from the host's location. Pro tip: this is the easiest way for first-timers to skip the stress of driving across the Golden Gate Bridge.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Marin%20City%2C%20CaliforniaHow far can I drive my Marin City RV rental, and is unlimited mileage available?
You've got plenty of range. Most Marin City hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and you can purchase additional miles upfront for around $0.35 to $0.50 each. Some hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect if you're planning a big loop, just filter for it on RVezy. To give you a sense of distances from Marin City: Point Reyes National Seashore is about 30 miles, Napa Valley wineries are 50 miles, Yosemite National Park is roughly 200 miles, Lake Tahoe is 220 miles, and Big Sur sits about 175 miles south. Pro tip: tally your planned route before booking and pre-buy mileage if needed, it's almost always cheaper than the overage rate.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhere are the best campgrounds near Marin City to park my RV?
You're spoiled for choice for best campgrounds near Marin City. The closest is Marin Park in Greenbrae, just 6 miles north with full hookups, Wi-Fi, and walking access to the Larkspur Ferry into San Francisco. Olema Campground (about 25 miles northwest) puts you at the doorstep of Point Reyes National Seashore with a working dump station and potable water. San Francisco North/Petaluma KOA is 35 miles north with a pool, playground, and big-rig pull-throughs. For a more rustic RV camping Marin City experience, Samuel P. Taylor State Park in Lagunitas offers redwood-shaded sites along Lagunitas Creek. Pro tip: book Marin Park 3 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends, it fills fast.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=469When is the best time of year for an RV trip in Marin City?
Marin City has a Mediterranean coastal climate that makes a Marin City RV trip comfortable nearly year-round. The sweet spot is September through early November, when summer fog burns off, daytime highs sit in the upper 60s to mid 70s, and crowds thin out at Muir Woods and Stinson Beach. Spring (March to May) brings green hillsides, wildflowers on Mt. Tam, and highs in the 60s. Summer is popular but coastal fog (locally called Karl) can blanket the coast through late morning, so plan inland activities or sleep in. Winter is mild (50s) and quiet, with the occasional Pacific storm. Pro tip: aim for late September to mid-October for the warmest, clearest weather and the best campsite availability.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=37.8712&lon=-122.5137I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Marin?
You'll do great, and you won't be alone figuring it out. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup: how to operate the slide-outs, fill fresh water, dump the tanks, run the propane stove, and use the leveling jacks. They'll answer questions and you can text or call them throughout your trip. For first time renting an RV in the Bay Area, choose a Class C motorhome or campervan under 25 feet, they handle Marin's twisty coastal roads and the Golden Gate Bridge approach much better than a 35-foot Class A. Pro tip: do your first overnight at Marin Park (only 6 miles away) so you can practice setup before tackling Highway 1 to Stinson Beach.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if my RV breaks down during my Marin County trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the protection plan, so if you get a flat tire on Highway 101, run out of fuel near Point Reyes, or have a battery die at the Marin Headlands lookout, one call dispatches help. The service handles tire changes, jump starts, fuel delivery, lockouts, and towing. Your host is also a phone call or message away for RV-specific questions like resetting a tripped breaker or resealing a slide. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's contact in your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap a quick photo of your RV's plate, length, and model in case the dispatcher asks. Then go enjoy that drive over Mt. Tam.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Marin City RV rental on a road trip out of state or to Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Marin City can absolutely cross state lines. Popular routes include the Pacific Coast Highway south to Big Sur and San Diego, US-101 north to the Oregon Coast and Crater Lake, I-80 east to Reno and Lake Tahoe, and a classic loop to Yosemite, Death Valley, and Las Vegas. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and their insurance, just message them through the listing before booking to confirm. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend across the border. Pro tip: tell your host your full route at booking so mileage and any cross-border paperwork are squared away upfront.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for, and what does gas cost in Marin?
Plan ahead and you'll be fine. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes get 10 to 14 mpg, and Class A coaches sit around 7 to 10 mpg. Travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves but will drop your tow vehicle's mpg by 25 to 40 percent. California gas prices run higher than the national average, and Marin County tends to be among the priciest spots in the state, expect $4.75 to $5.75 per gallon for regular and a bit more for diesel. Pro tip: fuel up in Novato or San Rafael (north of Marin City on US-101) where prices are typically 30 to 50 cents per gallon cheaper than stations near the Golden Gate Bridge.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I reserve a campground near Marin City?
Book early, this region fills up fast. California State Parks like Samuel P. Taylor and the Steep Ravine cabins on Mt. Tamalpais open reservations 6 months in advance through ReserveCalifornia.com (or 1-800-444-7275), and summer weekends often sell out within minutes of release. Marin Park in Greenbrae and the San Francisco North/Petaluma KOA accept bookings 9 to 12 months ahead and we'd recommend reserving by February for July and August stays. Federal sites like Kirby Cove are booked through Recreation.gov 3 months out. Pro tip: set a calendar alert for exactly 6 months before your target date and log in 5 minutes early, that's how locals snag the coveted Steep Ravine cabins overlooking the Pacific.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the driving conditions like around Marin City for an RV?
Marin City sits right at the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge on US-101, and the bridge itself is RV-friendly with no height restriction issues for any rig under 14 feet. The biggest local consideration is Highway 1 (Shoreline Highway) heading west to Muir Beach and Stinson Beach: it's stunning but tight, twisty, and not recommended for rigs over 30 feet. Stick to US-101 north toward Point Reyes via Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, or take the inland route via Sonoma. Coastal fog is common on summer mornings, give yourself extra following distance. Pro tip: avoid the Robin Williams Tunnel (Waldo Tunnel) southbound between 7 and 9 a.m. on weekdays, traffic into San Francisco backs up for miles.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Marin City?
Expect a wide range when you go RV camping Marin City. Full-service parks like Marin Park (Greenbrae) and the San Francisco North/Petaluma KOA offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer hookups, free Wi-Fi, laundry, hot showers, and dog walking areas. Olema Campground has full hookups plus a public dump station and potable water fill. State park campgrounds typically provide picnic tables, fire rings, food lockers, flush toilets, and potable water but no hookups, so plan to boondock with the onboard generator or batteries. Pro tip: top off fresh water and dump tanks at Olema before heading deeper into Point Reyes National Seashore, services thin out fast once you're past the visitor center.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=469What's actually inside the RVs available for rent in Marin City?
More than you'd think. A typical motorhome rental Marin City listing includes a queen bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds (most rigs sleep 4 to 6), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and sink, a wet bath with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning, a furnace, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Many include a generator, outdoor speakers, awning, leveling jacks, and a flatscreen TV. Campervan rental Marin City options are smaller but clever, think pop-top sleeping, induction cooktops, and solar panels for off-grid nights at Point Reyes. Wi-Fi varies; some hosts include a hotspot. Pro tip: filter by exact features on RVezy and read recent guest reviews to find the rig that fits your family RV trip Marin City plans.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Marin%20City%2C%20CaliforniaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Marin City hosts offer plenty of extras to make your trip easier. Common add-ons include camping kitchen kits ($30 to $75), bedding and linen packages ($25 to $50 per bed), camp chairs and tables, generator usage ($3 to $5 per hour), bike racks, and propane refills. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Marin City, Sausalito, Mill Valley, or San Rafael, but delivery to SFO, Oakland Airport, or your campground is widely available. Mileage policies typically include 100 to 150 free miles per night with overages at $0.35 to $0.50 per mile. Pro tip: bundle the kitchen kit and linen package on your first trip, it saves a Costco run and gets you on the road to Stinson Beach faster.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Marin%20City%2C%20CaliforniaHow does payment and the security deposit work for my Marin City RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy's platform with a credit or debit card, never cash to the host, and your reservation is confirmed once payment is processed. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup and released within about a week of return, assuming the RV comes back in the same shape it left. To avoid issues: do a thorough walkaround with the host at pickup and dropoff, take date-stamped photos and video of the interior, exterior, and odometer, and report anything unusual right away. Pro tip: return the RV with a full fuel and propane tank to skip refill fees and keep your full deposit.
