Campgrounds and RV parks near Meyers, CA

The lake drives the itinerary in summer. Pope, Baldwin, and Kiva beaches sit minutes from Camp Richardson, with kayak and paddleboard rentals at the resort marina. The Tallac Historic Site and Taylor Creek Visitor Center add easy interpretive walks for families. Hikers head for Eagle Falls, Cascade Falls, and the Mt. Tallac and Glen Alpine trailheads, all reachable from Camp Shelly and Emerald Bay State Park. The Vikingsholm trail drops about a mile from Highway 89 down to a Scandinavian-style mansion on the bay's shore. Cyclists ride the paved Pope-Baldwin bike path that connects Camp Richardson to the visitor center. In winter, Heavenly Mountain Resort and Sierra-at-Tahoe are both within a short drive of Meyers, and Sorensens Resort serves as a base for cross-country skiing in Hope Valley.

The South Shore camping calendar is built around snowmelt and fire season. Most U.S. Forest Service and state park campgrounds open in late May or June and close by mid-September. Eagle Point Campground at Emerald Bay State Park typically opens in mid-June for the summer season, and the Emerald Bay Boat-In Camp opens for reservations in early June. Camp Shelly generally runs from early June through Labor Day. Camp Richardson's tent loops at Badger's Den and Eagle's Nest are summer-only, while the RV Village and cabins stay open year-round, though restroom facilities and the dump station close in winter. July and August are the peak booking window, with weekends often filling six months out. Late June and the first half of September offer a calmer alternative once school is back in session. Winter brings heavy Sierra snow, chain controls on Highway 50 over Echo Summit, and limited overnight options outside of Camp Richardson's year-round RV sites, Tahoe Valley Campground, and Sorensens Resort in Hope Valley. Bears are active spring through fall, so bear-resistant food lockers are required for food storage at every developed site.

Elevation runs above 6,200 feet, so nights stay cool even in midsummer and afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August. Most campgrounds sit under Jeffrey and lodgepole pine, providing shade but limiting satellite reception. Bear-resistant food lockers are standard, and food, coolers, and scented items must be stored in them rather than in vehicles. Hookups are limited: Tahoe Valley Campground and the RV Village at Camp Richardson offer full or partial hookups, while Eagle Point, Camp Shelly, and most Forest Service sites are dry camping with vault or flush toilets and potable water. RV length restrictions are tight at the state and Forest Service campgrounds, with many sites at Camp Shelly capped at 24 feet. Cell coverage is generally good along the Highway 50 and Highway 89 corridors. Campfires are only allowed in provided rings and are subject to seasonal fire restrictions.
