Camping near Norris Canyon, California
Norris Canyon is an unincorporated area on the west side of San Ramon in Contra Costa County, tucked into the East Bay hills off I-680 between Pleasanton and Walnut Creek. It sits in the San Ramon Valley, within easy driving distance of both Oakland and San Francisco. The location makes it a practical base for RV travelers who want to mix Bay Area sightseeing with East Bay hiking.
The closest developed campground is Live Oak in Mount Diablo State Park, a wooded glen at 1,450 feet elevation one mile above the South Gate Entrance, with convenient access to Rock City's sandstone formations and the park's trail network. South of Norris Canyon, Trailer Villa RV Park in Redwood City offers full-hookup sites on the Peninsula side of the Bay. To the north, Benicia State Recreational Area provides limited self-contained overnight parking along the Carquinez Strait. Candlestick RV Park in San Francisco and Rio Viento RV Park round out the options for travelers who want urban access or a Delta-adjacent stay.
Things to do near Norris Canyon
Mount Diablo State Park is the main outdoor draw. From Live Oak - Mt Diablo State Park, short trails lead to various rock formations, most notably Sentinel Rock, a 100-foot-tall rock with steps to the top, and longer trails near the campground are all pretty hilly, with the summit about a 40 minute drive away. Ranger presentations are held in the campfire center, which works well for kids. Rock City's sandstone caves and climbing slabs are an easy walk from the campground and a hit with families.
For non-camping days, San Ramon and Danville have shopping centers, splash pads, and bike paths along the Iron Horse Trail. North of Norris Canyon, Benicia State Recreational Area offers waterfront paths along the Carquinez Strait, with about 2.5 miles of road and bike paths. South on the Peninsula, Trailer Villa puts guests within reach of Stanford and the Baylands.

The Bay Area has a Mediterranean climate, so timing matters. Summers in this part of the East Bay are long, warm, arid, and mostly clear, while winters are short, cold, wet, and partly cloudy. Rain is concentrated from late fall through early spring; the wettest month is December, averaging 111 mm of precipitation across 13 rainy days, while August is nearly dry.
Spring is prime time on Mount Diablo. Wildflowers bloom across the oak grasslands, and the weather is mild. Summer brings heat to the inland valleys, and inland campgrounds can be hot during the day. Wildfire risk peaks in late summer and early fall, and campfire restrictions are common in state parks during that period. Fall cools off with clear skies and is another strong window for trips. Live Oak is open year-round, though wet ground and short daylight should be planned for in winter.

Booking and reservations
Mount Diablo State Park sites are booked through ReserveCalifornia; visitors search for Mount Diablo, select arrival date and length of stay, then choose an available site. Reservations open six months in advance from the current date, with inventory becoming available each day on a rolling six-month window. Sites can accommodate RVs and trailers up to 20 feet, so larger rigs should look elsewhere.
Benicia State Recreation Area operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations possible, and overnight use is limited to motorhomes or self-contained vehicles with trailers. Trailer Villa RV Park and Candlestick RV Park take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and both fill quickly around major Bay Area events. Book the closest weekends and holidays well ahead.
What to expect on site
At Live Oak - Mt Diablo State Park, expect a compact, historic layout. The campground features 22 sites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire pit or stove. There are no hookups, potable water is available seasonally, and facilities include flush toilets, picnic tables, food lockers, and fire rings. Water availability may be limited due to drought conditions affecting the mountain's spring-fed source, so bringing additional water is recommended.
Benicia State Recreation Area camping is limited to motorhomes or vehicles with trailers, which must be fully self-contained, and tents are not permitted. Enroute sites are for one night only, with entry after 4 p.m. and departure by 9 a.m. the following morning. Trailer Villa offers full-hookup sites, is big-rig accessible, and is pet-friendly. Candlestick RV Park has pull-through sites for big rigs with 30- and 50-amp electrical service, water, and sewer hookups.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Norris Canyon, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Norris Canyon, CA?
RV rental in Norris Canyon is more affordable than you might expect for the Bay Area, with most motorhomes averaging around $200 to $275 per night and towable trailers averaging about $125 to $175 per night on RVezy. Campervans and smaller Class B rentals often come in lower, making them a smart pick if you want a cheap RV rental in Norris Canyon for a quick Mount Diablo getaway. Many hosts offer 10 to 20 percent weekly and monthly discounts, so longer trips bring the nightly rate down quickly. Pro tip: book midweek pickups in shoulder seasons like March or October when area demand drops and the best-priced listings open up.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Norris%20Canyon%2C%20CaliforniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Norris Canyon, CA?
Good news: a regular Class C California driver's license (or the equivalent from your home state or country) is all you need to rent an RV in Norris Canyon for nearly every motorhome, campervan, travel trailer, or fifth wheel on RVezy. California only requires a Noncommercial Class B license for motorhomes longer than 40 feet, and a Noncommercial Class A for fifth wheels over 15,000 lbs, and those mega-rigs are rare on the platform. You'll need to be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the app. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto association before you fly and you're set.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-handbook-2011/license-classes-and-requirements/Is my RV rental in Norris Canyon protected if something goes wrong?
Every booking on RVezy includes a renter Protection Plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head out of Norris Canyon on I-680 with confidence. The Protection Plan covers accidental damage to the vehicle (this is coverage, not traditional insurance), and during checkout you choose the level of protection that fits your comfort, from Basic to Peace of Mind. Hosts do not pick your coverage, you do. If you get a flat on the climb up Mount Diablo Scenic Boulevard or a battery dies at Del Valle, one call gets help dispatched any hour. Pro tip: snap photos at pickup and dropoff so any small claim is settled quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Norris Canyon RV trip plans change?
Booking an RV in Norris Canyon is low-risk because RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy, and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in dates without stress. Refund amounts after the grace period depend on how far out your trip is. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds you in full or helps with travel credit and rebooking support. The full policy details live in your RVezy account and Help Center. Pro tip: book early to get the best Mount Diablo State Park dates, then relax knowing you have a window to adjust if life happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Norris Canyon?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Norris Canyon is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see dozens of San Ramon-area hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots. Bring your pup along to Las Trampas Regional Wilderness, the Iron Horse Regional Trail, or Bishop Ranch Regional Preserve, all dog-friendly and minutes from Norris Canyon Road. Note that Mount Diablo State Park allows leashed dogs in campgrounds and paved overlooks but not on most hiking trails, so plan dog walks at East Bay Regional Parks instead. Pro tip: message the host about any pet fees and bring a portable water bowl, summer East Bay heat sneaks up fast.
ebparks.org/parks/las-trampasCan the RV be delivered to my campground or home in Norris Canyon?
Yes, RV delivery in Norris Canyon is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who don't want to drive a big rig through San Ramon's hilly streets. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV straight to your driveway, an East Bay campground like Del Valle Regional Park, or even further out to Mount Diablo's Live Oak Campground (within length limits). They'll level it, hook it up, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter listings by Delivery to see who offers it. Pro tip: ask about delivery to the Alameda County Fairgrounds RV park, a flat, easy setup spot just 20 minutes south.
acgov.org/fairgrounds/How does mileage work and how far can I drive on a Norris Canyon RV trip?
Hosts in Norris Canyon set their own mileage policies, and you'll see the exact daily allowance (typically 100 to 200 miles per day) right on the listing, plus options for RV rental with unlimited mileage if you're planning a bigger road trip. From Norris Canyon you're perfectly placed for short hops or epic routes: Mount Diablo State Park is about 25 miles, Lake Del Valle 20 miles, Santa Cruz beaches 75 miles, Yosemite Valley about 180 miles, and Lake Tahoe roughly 195 miles via I-80. Pro tip: if you're eyeing Yosemite or Tahoe, filter for unlimited-mileage listings up front so you can wander freely without watching the odometer.
nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/driving.htmWhere can I camp with my RV near Norris Canyon, CA?
There are great campgrounds near Norris Canyon to anchor your RV trip. Del Valle Family Campground in Livermore (about 20 miles south) sits on a 750-acre lake with water and electric sites, swimming, and boat rentals. Mount Diablo State Park's Live Oak and Junction Campgrounds (around 25 miles north) deliver oak-shaded sites and accept RVs up to about 20 feet. Anthony Chabot Regional Park in Castro Valley offers some full-hookup sites in oak woodlands, and the Alameda County Fairgrounds RV Park in Pleasanton is a flat, easy big-rig option. Brannan Island State Recreation Area in the Delta is a scenic drive north. Pro tip: weekends at Mount Diablo book up fast, so reserve early on ReserveCalifornia.
reservecalifornia.com/When is the best time of year for RV camping in Norris Canyon?
Spring (March to May) and fall (September to early November) are the sweet spot for RV camping in Norris Canyon, with daytime temps in the 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit range and the East Bay hills at their greenest after winter rains. Summer is warm and dry, often 85 to 95 degrees, so you'll want a rig with strong AC if you're traveling July or August. Winters are mild (highs in the 50s, lows in the 40s, occasional rain), making it one of the few US regions where year-round RV trips are easy. Pro tip: April wildflower blooms on Mount Diablo are spectacular and the best-kept secret of any Norris Canyon RV trip.
weather.gov/mtr/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one out of San Ramon?
You will be fine, even if it is your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, slides, propane, tanks, and driving tips for your specific rig, so you do not leave until you are confident. I-680 and the San Ramon Valley Boulevard corridor are wide and well-marked, and most renters take an easy first-day drive to a nearby campground like Del Valle or Anthony Chabot to get comfortable. If you would rather skip city driving, choose a host who offers delivery. Pro tip: pick a Class C motorhome or campervan for your first trip, they handle like a large van and Bishop Ranch parking lots are easy spots to practice.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown on the road?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter Protection Plan, so a flat tire on Crow Canyon Road, a dead battery at Mount Diablo's summit lot, or a lockout in downtown Walnut Creek is one phone call away from help. The dispatcher coordinates towing, jump-starts, fuel delivery, and tire service. For mechanical questions, your host is also a quick message away through the RVezy app and usually responds within minutes. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone before you leave the pickup driveway, and snap a photo of your RV's VIN and plate so you can share them quickly if you need help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Norris Canyon RV rental on a road trip to Oregon or other states?
Yes, multi-state RV road trips from Norris Canyon are very doable, and many hosts welcome interstate travel, you will see their travel range right on the listing. Popular routes include Highway 1 down to Big Sur and Santa Barbara, I-5 north to Crater Lake, Oregon (about 380 miles), or US-395 to the Eastern Sierra and Mammoth Lakes (about 320 miles). Travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because insurance and Protection Plan coverage do not extend south of the border, and trips to Canada require host approval. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm your route, especially if you are chasing fall colors in Oregon.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Norris Canyon RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost on any RV road trip from Norris Canyon, so plan ahead. California gas prices typically run higher than the national average (often $4.50 to $5.50 per gallon in the Bay Area), and most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG while campervans average 18 to 22 MPG. For a weekend at Mount Diablo (about 50 miles round trip), budget $25 to $40 in a Class C. For a Yosemite loop (around 400 miles), expect $150 to $200. Pro tip: fill up in Tracy or Manteca on the way east, prices are noticeably lower than San Ramon stations, and avoid topping off in tourist hubs near Yosemite where prices spike.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Norris Canyon?
Lock in popular campgrounds early. Mount Diablo State Park and Del Valle Regional Park both open reservations six months in advance on ReserveCalifornia.com and reservations.ebparks.org respectively, and Bay Area weekends from April through October sell out within hours of the booking window opening. For weeknights or shoulder-season trips, two to four weeks ahead is usually plenty. Private parks like Sandy Beach, Brannan Island, and the Alameda County Fairgrounds RV Park often have more availability. Pro tip: if your dream weekend is sold out, set a free cancellation alert on tools like Campnab, then book your Norris Canyon RV rental the moment a site opens. Cancellations happen daily.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the driving conditions like around San Ramon and Norris Canyon?
Driving an RV around Norris Canyon is straightforward once you know the local quirks. I-680 and I-580 are the main arteries, both wide, well-paved, and easy in an RV outside of rush hour (avoid 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. weekdays). Norris Canyon Road itself winds and narrows west toward Castro Valley, so larger Class A rigs should stick to Crow Canyon Road or San Ramon Valley Boulevard instead. Mount Diablo Scenic Boulevard has tight switchbacks and a 20-foot RV length limit. Pro tip: weekend cyclists pack the canyon roads at sunrise, so plan your morning pickup or drive a bit later to avoid stop-and-go behind big peloton groups.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Norris Canyon?
East Bay campgrounds offer everything from full hookups to rustic sites, so you can match the experience to your rig. Del Valle Family Campground and Anthony Chabot Regional Park have water, electric, and dump stations on site. The Alameda County Fairgrounds RV Park in Pleasanton offers full 30/50 amp hookups and laundry. Mount Diablo State Park sites are more primitive with potable water and flush toilets at Live Oak and Juniper, but no hookups. Most parks have dump stations open to paid campers, and you can also dump and refill water at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds for a small fee. Pro tip: top off fresh water before heading to Mount Diablo, fill stations near the summit are limited.
ebparks.org/parks/del-valleWhat's included inside a typical RV rental from a Norris Canyon host?
Most motorhome rentals in Norris Canyon come fully equipped so you can pretty much show up with clothes and groceries. Expect a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and couch beds, a kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, AC and furnace, propane, fresh and waste tanks, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many hosts include linens, towels, kitchenware, outdoor chairs, a TV, and a Wi-Fi hotspot or generator. Campervans are more compact but still include sleeping, a small kitchen, and often a portable toilet. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities tab carefully, and message the host to add a generator or solar setup if you plan to boondock at Mount Diablo.
parks.ca.gov/mountdiabloWhat add-ons and pickup options should I look for when I rent an RV in Norris Canyon?
RVezy hosts in the San Ramon area offer all kinds of add-ons that make your trip easier: bike racks, kayaks, generators, propane fire pits, bedding and towel packages, camp chairs, outdoor grills, and even pre-stocked kitchen kits. Each add-on shows its fee right on the listing. For pickup and dropoff, most hosts meet you at their home near Norris Canyon Road, Bishop Ranch, or off I-680, and many offer delivery (typically $1 to $3 per mile) straight to your campground. Mileage policies, generator hours, and pet fees are all clearly listed. Pro tip: ask about a late-evening return slot if you're driving back from Yosemite, traffic into the East Bay on Sunday afternoons is brutal.
parks.ca.gov/mountdiabloHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Norris Canyon RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay the booking total through RVezy when you reserve (never directly to the host), and your card is charged for the rental, taxes, fees, and chosen Protection Plan level. A refundable security deposit, set by the host and typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV, is pre-authorized on your card before pickup and released after a successful return inspection. To avoid issues, do a thorough walk-around video at pickup and dropoff, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, and empty the tanks as outlined in your host's checkout instructions. Pro tip: use a credit card with no foreign transaction fees if you are visiting from abroad.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a great weekend road trip itinerary from Norris Canyon?
For a classic RV road trip from Norris Canyon, point the rig east. Day one, drive about 60 miles to Livermore Wine Country and overnight at Del Valle Regional Park with a sunset lake swim. Day two, cruise 90 minutes north to the Sacramento Delta and stay at Brannan Island State Recreation Area for kayaking and stargazing. Day three, head 100 miles south to Henry W. Coe State Park for hiking, then loop home. Want bigger adventure? Yosemite Valley is about 180 miles east, and the Pacific Coast at Half Moon Bay State Beach is just 55 miles west via I-580 and Highway 92. Pro tip: leave Norris Canyon by 8 a.m. on Fridays to beat Bay Area commuter traffic.
