Camping near North Gate, California
North Gate sits on the western flank of Mount Diablo in Contra Costa County, with North Gate Road climbing directly from Walnut Creek into Mount Diablo State Park. The location puts RV renters within a short drive of three distinct camping environments: oak-woodland sites on the mountain itself, breezy bayside parking along the Carquinez Strait, and full-hookup river resorts in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to the east.
Live Oak - Mt Diablo State Park anchors the in-park option, a 22-site campground in a wooded glen at roughly 1,450 feet elevation with picnic tables, fire rings, flush toilets, and potable water. Benicia State Recreational Area, about 25 miles northwest, offers three self-contained enroute RV sites along the Carquinez Strait. East of the mountain, Rio Viento RV Park, Tradewinds RV Park, and Eddo's Harbor and RV Park line the Delta near Rio Vista, catering to anglers and boaters with full hookups and marina access on the San Joaquin River.
Things to do near North Gate
Mount Diablo State Park dominates the activity list. From Live Oak - Mt Diablo State Park, campers reach the Rock City sandstone formations on foot and connect to trails toward the 3,849-foot summit, which delivers panoramic Bay views on clear days. North Gate Road and South Gate Road are popular road-cycling climbs, so RV drivers should expect cyclists on weekends and use caution on blind curves.
Benicia State Recreational Area covers tidal marsh and grassy hills along the Carquinez Strait, with paved bike and walking paths, bird watching at Southampton Bay, and fishing at Dillon's Point. East in the Delta, Eddo's Harbor and RV Park, Rio Viento RV Park, and Tradewinds RV Park provide direct access to striped bass and sturgeon fishing, boat launches, and quiet levee-road drives across Sherman Island.

The region runs on a Mediterranean climate: warm dry summers and mild wet winters. Spring, roughly March through May, is the strongest window for Mount Diablo camping. Wildflowers bloom on the lower slopes, daytime highs are comfortable, and Friday and Saturday nights at Live Oak - Mt Diablo State Park fill out quickly. Reservations open six months in advance through ReserveCalifornia, and weekend dates often book at the opening.
Summer brings hot, exposed conditions on the mountain with afternoon highs commonly in the mid-80s Fahrenheit and elevated wildfire risk. Bring extra water, since the park's spring-fed supply can be limited during drought years. Fall is mild and uncrowded, and matches the striper run in the Delta, which favors stays at Eddo's Harbor and RV Park, Rio Viento RV Park, and Tradewinds RV Park.
Winter is the wettest stretch, with rain concentrated from November through March. Mount Diablo's roads can close after storms, and park gates close at sunset year-round.

How to book campgrounds near North Gate
Live Oak - Mt Diablo State Park is reserved through ReserveCalifornia, the booking platform for California State Parks. Reservations are released up to six months ahead of the arrival date, and weekend sites in spring and fall are often gone within minutes of release. Creating an account before the booking window opens speeds the process. Cancellations are common on Friday and Saturday mornings for the same weekend, so last-minute checks pay off.
Benicia State Recreational Area does not accept reservations. Its three enroute sites are first-come, first-served, limited to fully self-contained motorhomes or trailers, with tents not permitted. The Delta parks, including Rio Viento RV Park, Tradewinds RV Park, and Eddo's Harbor and RV Park, book directly through each operator's office or website rather than through a central reservation system.
What to expect
Sites at Live Oak - Mt Diablo State Park are close together in oak woodland, with picnic tables, fire rings, food lockers, flush toilets, and potable water but no hookups, and cellular service is limited. Park gates close at sunset and reopen in the morning, so late arrivals are not possible. North Gate and South Gate roads are narrow and winding with cyclists, and vehicles over about 20 feet are not recommended on the climb.
Benicia State Recreational Area's enroute sites function as overnight RV parking with a water faucet, picnic tables, and trash service, but no hookups, and freeway noise is audible. The Delta RV parks at Rio Viento, Tradewinds, and Eddo's Harbor offer full hookups, marina access, and grass-and-gravel sites geared to anglers and boaters.

Compact campervan rentals near North Gate trend toward the lower end, while a Class A or fifth wheel sleeping six sits at the higher end. Pro tip: hosts based right off I-680 in Walnut Creek or Concord often offer the best value because you save on delivery distance to Mount Diablo State Park.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Walnut%20Creek%2C%20CaliforniaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in North Gate?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in North Gate, CA. California does not require a commercial driver's license or any special RV endorsement for motorhomes and trailers under 40 feet, which covers virtually every rig on RVezy. You'll just need to be 25 or older and pass a quick ID verification through the RVezy platform when you book. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Pair your home license with an International Driving Permit from your local auto association before you arrive. Most first-time renters are surprised by how simple the paperwork is, leaving more time to focus on the fun stuff like planning the drive up North Gate Road to Mount Diablo's summit.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/driver-education-and-safety/educational-materials/fast-facts/recreational-vehicles-and-trailers-ffdl-05/What's included to protect me on my North Gate RV rental?
Every booking on RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you can hit the road around North Gate with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host) so you can match it to your comfort and budget. Roadside assistance is built right in, meaning if you get a flat on the winding Mount Diablo Scenic Boulevard or need a jump start at a campground, help is one phone call away. It removes the biggest worry most first-time renters have.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my North Gate RV booking?
Booking an RV rental in North Gate is low-risk because RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy that applies to every reservation. If unexpected life events, weather, or a natural disaster like a Bay Area wildfire affects your plans, contact RVezy support as soon as you know your dates are changing, the sooner you cancel, the more flexibility you'll have. If a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit so your trip stays protected. Pro tip: lock in your dates early to secure the best Mount Diablo weekend, knowing the cancellation policy has your back if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a North Gate RV trip?
Absolutely, North Gate is a fantastic launchpad for a pet-friendly RV rental, and many owners on RVezy welcome four-legged passengers. Use the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and you'll see motorhomes and campervans where dogs are explicitly allowed. At Mount Diablo State Park, leashed dogs are welcome in campgrounds, paved roads, and developed picnic areas, but not on hiking trails, so plan trail time at nearby dog-friendly East Bay Regional Parks like Briones or Las Trampas. Pro tip: message the host before booking to share your dog's size and breed, it's the fastest way to confirm and often unlocks helpful tips like the nearest dog park in Walnut Creek.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=24820Can the RV be delivered to me in North Gate?
Yes, RV delivery in North Gate is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if you're nervous about driving a big rig through Bay Area traffic. Many hosts in Walnut Creek, Concord, and Pleasant Hill will deliver and set up your motorhome rental in North Gate at your home, a friend's place, or directly at a campground that accommodates your rig size. They'll do a full walkthrough showing you how the appliances, slide-outs, and hookups work before they leave. Delivery fees typically range from $2 to $5 per mile, and some hosts offer free local delivery within a set radius. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see who offers it.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Walnut%20Creek%2C%20CaliforniaHow far can I drive from North Gate on an RV trip?
Plenty far, because North Gate sits at the heart of California's best RV road trip country. From here you can reach Yosemite National Park in about 3 hours via Highway 120, Lake Tahoe in roughly 3.5 hours on I-80, Big Sur in around 3 hours down Highway 1, Napa Valley wine country in just 45 minutes, and the Mendocino coast in about 3.5 hours. Many RVezy hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some even offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for a longer RV road trip from North Gate. Pro tip: ask about unlimited mileage packages directly in the listing's message thread before booking.
nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/driving.htmWhere can I camp in an RV near North Gate?
You have plenty of choices for RV camping near North Gate. Mount Diablo State Park is the obvious headliner, with Live Oak and Juniper campgrounds open year-round, though note that rigs must generally be 20 feet or under due to steep, winding park roads. Anthony Chabot Regional Park, about 30 minutes southwest, offers hookup sites and a dump station near Lake Chabot. For longer rigs, Sugar Barge RV Resort on Bethel Island has full hookups and marina access, and Del Valle Regional Park near Livermore offers lakeside sites about 45 minutes south. Reserve early through ReserveCalifornia for state parks and ebparks.org for regional parks.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=517When is the best time of year for an RV trip from North Gate?
Spring and fall are the sweet spot for an RV trip from North Gate, with March through May bringing mild 60 to 75°F days and Mount Diablo's famous wildflower bloom peaking in Mitchell Canyon in late March and early April. September and October deliver crisp, clear days with summit visibility that can stretch well over 100 miles on the clearest days. Summers (June through August) are warm and dry, often hitting the 90s on the mountain, while winters are mild with most rain falling November through March. Shoulder seasons are also when campervan rental prices near North Gate are lowest and weekend campsites are easier to grab.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=517I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
Yes, first time renting an RV in North Gate is genuinely easier than people expect, and RVezy is built around supporting beginners. Every host gives you an in-person orientation at pickup or delivery, walking you through the generator, propane, water, slide-outs, and dump procedure so you never feel left to figure it out. You can message the host with questions before you book and during your trip. For first-timers, a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer is the friendliest size for navigating to Mount Diablo's Live Oak Campground. Still feeling nervous about Bay Area traffic? Choose a host who offers delivery and let them park it for you, you just step in and start the vacation.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
Take a deep breath, because 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, so help is always just a phone call away. Whether you've got a flat tire on I-680, an engine issue while climbing North Gate Road, or a dead battery at your campsite in Briones Regional Park, the roadside team can dispatch service to your location across California. Your host is also typically reachable directly through the RVezy app for quick questions like how to reset a tripped breaker or relight the water heater. Pro tip: snap a photo of any issue and send it through the app, it speeds up the diagnosis and gets you back on the road faster.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my North Gate RV rental across state or international borders?
Cross-state RV adventures are on the table: you can drive your North Gate rental into Oregon, Nevada, or Arizona, and many RVezy hosts are happy to approve it during booking. Popular routes from North Gate include Lake Tahoe and Reno via I-80, the Oregon Coast via Highway 101, and Las Vegas plus Zion via I-15. Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and protection plan, so confirm in the message thread before booking. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection plan does not extend there. Share your planned route with the host up front for the smoothest approval.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for gas on an RV trip from North Gate?
Bay Area fuel is no secret, so it helps to plan ahead. Class C motorhomes and travel trailers near North Gate average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, while smaller campervan rentals can hit 18 to 22 mpg. California gas typically runs $4.50 to $5.50 per gallon, so a 300-mile weekend trip to Yosemite and back in a Class C will cost roughly $130 to $180 in fuel. Fill up before climbing Mount Diablo (the closest stations are on Ygnacio Valley Road and Oak Grove Road in Walnut Creek) since there's no gas inside the park. Pro tip: use the GasBuddy app to find the cheapest stations along I-680 and I-580, the savings add up fast.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book a campground near North Gate?
For the best campgrounds near North Gate, plan to book six months out, which is the maximum window on ReserveCalifornia.com (the official reservation system for Mount Diablo State Park and most California State Parks). Weekend sites at Live Oak and Juniper campgrounds release exactly six months ahead at 8 a.m. Pacific and can vanish in minutes during spring wildflower season and fall. Midweek stays are far easier, often available the next day. East Bay Regional Parks like Anthony Chabot use a separate reservation system at ebparks.org and open four months in advance. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for six months minus one day, and have your campsite numbers picked out before the booking window opens.
reservecalifornia.com/What are driving conditions like around North Gate and Mount Diablo?
North Gate sits just off I-680 in Walnut Creek, so your drive to most destinations is smooth, four-lane freeway territory. The catch is local roads up Mount Diablo: North Gate Road and South Gate Road are steep, winding, with tight switchbacks, blind corners, and lots of cyclists, which is why the state park limits RVs and trailers to 20 feet or less. Bay Area commute traffic can be heavy on I-680 from 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m., so aim to travel midday or after 7 p.m. Pro tip: if you want a larger motorhome rental in North Gate, ask your host about delivery directly to your campground so you skip the mountain drive entirely.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near North Gate?
Campgrounds near North Gate range from primitive to full-hookup, so you can pick what fits your rig. Mount Diablo State Park's Live Oak and Juniper campgrounds offer flush toilets, drinking water, picnic tables, fire rings, and free showers at both locations, but no electric or sewer hookups, so plan to arrive with full water tanks and empty waste tanks. Anthony Chabot Regional Park has electric hookups, showers, and a dump station. Sugar Barge RV Resort on Bethel Island provides full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50 amp electric) plus Wi-Fi. The closest RV dump station to North Gate is at Anthony Chabot or Brannan Island State Recreation Area. Pro tip: top off potable water at the Mount Diablo South Gate kiosk before climbing to your site.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=517What should I expect inside a North Gate RV rental?
Even the smaller rigs on RVezy come loaded for a comfortable Bay Area trip. A typical motorhome rental in North Gate includes a real bed (often a queen plus convertible dinette), a full kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control, and seatbelted seating for 4 to 6 people. Most rentals also include a generator or solar setup for off-grid camping at Mount Diablo, plus a flat-screen TV. Wi-Fi varies by host, but you'll generally have decent LTE coverage at Live Oak and Juniper. Check each listing's amenity list and ask the host about specific items like a coffee maker or BBQ. Linens, kitchenware, and outdoor chairs are often included or available as add-ons.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicle-industry-services/registration-information-ris/recreational-vehicles/What add-ons and pickup options are available?
North Gate hosts on RVezy typically offer a great menu of optional extras to make the trip easier. Common add-ons include linen and towel packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, generator use, propane refills, BBQs, camping chairs, bike racks, and outdoor rugs, each priced per trip. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Walnut Creek, Concord, Pleasant Hill, or Martinez, with hours typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Mileage policies vary, many hosts include 100 free miles per night with extra miles around $0.35 to $0.50 each, while some offer unlimited mileage packages. Festival-Friendly and Instant Book filters help you find flexible hosts fast. Pro tip: ask about a late return window if you're heading back from Yosemite on Sunday evening, hosts often accommodate.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicle-industry-services/registration-information-ris/recreational-vehicles/How do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment for your North Gate RV rental is handled securely through the RVezy platform, never directly with the host, which protects you on both ends. You'll pay the rental cost up front using a credit or debit card, and a refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment, typically pre-authorized on your card shortly before pickup. As long as the RV comes back in the same condition with no extra mileage or generator hours owed, the deposit is released after your trip. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick video walkaround at both pickup and drop-off, it's the easiest way to avoid any deposit disputes and finish your trip on a high note.
