Novato camping overview
Novato sits in northern Marin County, about 30 miles north of San Francisco along US Highway 101, making it a practical RV base for exploring the Bay Area, the Marin coast, and the Napa and Sonoma wine regions. The city has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate with dry, sunny summers and cool, wet winters, and most RV parks in the area stay open year-round. Campgrounds near Novato lean toward full-hookup commercial parks rather than rustic public sites, with options including Novato RV Park, Marin RV Park, Marin Park, Golden Gate Trailer Park, and the larger San Francisco North / Petaluma KOA just up the freeway in Petaluma. Travelers typically use these parks as a home base for day trips into San Francisco, across the Golden Gate Bridge, or out to Point Reyes National Seashore, Muir Woods, and the wineries of Sonoma County. Reservations are recommended in summer and on holiday weekends.
Things to do near Novato
Outdoor recreation centers on the open spaces that ring the city. Mount Burdell Open Space Preserve offers hiking and mountain biking through oak woodlands and grasslands with broad views over the North Bay, while Olompali State Historic Park preserves layers of Coast Miwok, Mexican-era, and ranching history along quiet trails. Stafford Lake Park draws anglers, picnickers, and disc golfers, and the Hamilton wetlands are popular for birdwatching. Downtown Novato along Grant Avenue has independent shops, restaurants, and the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art. The location also makes day trips easy: the Golden Gate Bridge, Muir Woods, Point Reyes National Seashore, and the Sonoma and Napa wine regions are all within roughly an hour's drive.

Novato is a year-round RV destination because the local climate rarely freezes and snow is essentially unknown. Summer, from June through August, is the busiest season for camping. Days are warm and reliably dry, fog often burns off by late morning, and parks along the US 101 corridor fill quickly on weekends with visitors using Novato as a Bay Area base. Spring, from March through May, brings green hills, wildflowers on Mount Burdell, and comfortable hiking temperatures, though showers are still possible into April. Fall, from September through November, is one of the best windows for travel: warm, dry, and less crowded, with the wine country harvest in full swing through October. Winter, from December through February, is the wet season, when the great majority of the area's annual rainfall arrives. Commercial parks stay open, but expect saturated ground, occasional storms, and reduced demand that often translates to lower midweek rates.

I reached out for clarification and location, no response! Moments later Rveezy tells me the host is no longer comfortable with accommodating us) Evgeniy not only responed within 5min of me reachout out, but had us out and on the road to enjoy out trip within an hour. The vehicle is perfect, clean and easy to function. We had never driven or worked an RV before but his quick rundown and eargeness to answer any questions helped put out minds at ease. He is so kind, professonal, and absolutely Amazing 🤩. We will definitely rent from him again despite our extra charges for not having time to thoroughly clean out and fill up; but that was a very small price to pay for what we would have missed if he hadn't come to help us out of a pickle. How to book campgrounds near Novato
Most campgrounds in the immediate Novato area are privately operated, so bookings go directly through the operator's website or phone line rather than a state or federal portal. Novato RV Park, Marin RV Park, Marin Park, and Golden Gate Trailer Park each take reservations directly; Novato RV Park lists a reservations line and accepts overnight, weekly, and monthly stays. The San Francisco North / Petaluma KOA, about 15 miles north, books through KOA.com or its toll-free reservations number. Summer weekends and major holidays sell out earliest, so booking several weeks ahead is wise from Memorial Day through Labor Day. For nearby state and regional parks with camping, reservations route through ReserveCalifornia.
What to expect at Novato RV parks
Campgrounds in and around Novato are mostly full-hookup commercial parks rather than wilderness sites. Expect 30 and 50 amp electric service, water, and sewer at most sites, along with Wi-Fi, laundry, and on-site management. Novato RV Park, for example, offers full hookups, pull-through and big-rig sites, a seasonal pool, a small store and deli, and a dog walking area, with paved roads and gravel pads. Sites tend to be close together by Western standards and pads are not always perfectly level, so leveling blocks are useful. Cell coverage on major carriers is generally strong throughout the Novato corridor. The terrain is flat near the highway with oak-covered hills rising to the west.
