Campgrounds and RV parks near Pacheco, CA

The summit road in Mount Diablo State Park climbs to the peak with views across the Bay and Central Valley, and trailheads at Live Oak - Mt Diablo State Park lead to Sentinel Rock, a 100-foot-tall rock with steps to the top, and other sandstone formations at Rock City. Benicia State Recreational Area covers marsh, grassy hillsides and rocky beaches along the narrowest portion of the Carquinez Strait, with 2.5 miles of road and bike paths, picnicking, bird watching, and fishing on Dillon's Point. From Vallejo, the San Francisco Bay Ferry runs from the waterfront directly into San Francisco, which lets families leave the rig parked. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is in Vallejo, and Napa wine country sits 20 to 30 minutes north. The Delta is a premier wind spot for boating, jet skiing, paddleboarding, fishing, wing foiling, and windsurfing.

Concord and Pacheco have a Mediterranean climate, with mild, rainy winters and hot, sunny summers. Roughly three quarters of annual rainfall lands between November and March, and July through September are nearly bone dry. That timing shapes the camping calendar more than temperature does. Spring, from mid-March through May, is the most reliable window. Wildflowers bloom on Mount Diablo, trails are open, and daytime highs sit in a comfortable range. Live Oak is popular with weekend hikers, so Friday and Saturday nights book out quickly in spring and fall. Summer brings inland heat: summers are long, hot, arid, and mostly clear, with temperatures typically varying from 40 to 88 degrees and rarely above 99. Higher Mount Diablo campsites run cooler than the valley floor, and Bay-influenced sites near Benicia and Vallejo see afternoon wind and fog that hold temperatures down. Fall is dry, warm, and uncrowded after Labor Day, with elevated fire risk into late October. Winter camping is possible at Live Oak, which is open year-round, but storms, mud, and cold nights are routine, and access roads on the mountain can close during heavy weather.

Expect a clear split between state park and private park experiences. Live Oak - Mt Diablo State Park is rustic: no hookups or potable water within the campground, flush toilets and showers depending on water restrictions, and each site has a picnic table and fire ring. The campground has the small, densely-packed feeling typical of 1930s campgrounds, with less privacy than more modern campgrounds. Park gates close at sunset and reopen at 8:00 AM, so plan arrivals accordingly. Benicia enroute campsites are available to self-contained camping vehicles for one night only; entry is after 4 p.m. and you must leave by 9 a.m. Tradewinds RV Park and Vallejo RV Park are urban, full-hookup parks close to the freeway, so road noise carries; in exchange, ferry, shopping, and groceries are minutes away. Rio Viento offers full hookups with 20/30/50 amp service and accepts big rigs up to 50 feet.
