Camping near Plainview, California
Plainview is a small unincorporated community in Tulare County, in California's San Joaquin Valley, sitting at roughly 354 feet of elevation between Visalia and Porterville. For RV travelers, its main draw is location: the foothill route to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks runs just to the north along Highway 198, putting the giant sequoia groves, Lake Kaweah, and the Kaweah River within a short drive.
The area itself is agricultural and quiet, with most developed RV camping clustered to the north and east. Options range from valley-floor parks like Royal Palms and Country Manor Mobile Home Community to the Visalia / Sequoia National Park KOA Journey on the Visalia side, then foothill parks closer to the national park entrance such as Lemon Cove Village RV Park and, further up Highway 198 in Three Rivers, Sequoia Campground and Lodge. In-park campgrounds at higher elevation operate seasonally and book through the federal Recreation.gov system.
Things to do near Plainview
The biggest draw is the drive east on Highway 198 toward the Ash Mountain entrance of Sequoia National Park. Day trips reach the Giant Forest, the General Sherman Tree, Moro Rock, and Tunnel Log, with shorter family hikes on the paved Big Trees Trail and the Tokopah Falls trail near Lodgepole. Closer to the valley, Lake Kaweah offers boating, swimming, and fishing, while the Kaweah River through Three Rivers is a regional spot for whitewater rafting in spring and early summer. Downtown Visalia adds restaurants, a farmers market, and family attractions when a non-driving day is needed. Several foothill parks, including Lemon Cove Village RV Park, also offer on-site pools, dog runs, and game rooms for kids on rest days.

Plainview sits in a Mediterranean, semi-arid climate. Summers on the valley floor are hot and very dry, with daytime highs routinely in the mid-30s Celsius and rare measurable rain. RV travelers using valley parks in July and August should plan for shaded sites, full hookups for air conditioning, and early-morning departures to higher elevations.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for camping in the foothills, with mild days, cool nights, green hills in spring, and lower wildfire risk in late spring. Wildflowers along the Kaweah foothills typically peak from March into May.
Winter is the wet season. Rain falls mostly between November and March, the Sierra above gets heavy snow, and tire chains can be required on Highway 198 above Hospital Rock. Most higher-elevation national park campgrounds close from early fall through late spring; Potwisha in the foothills and Azalea at Grant Grove are the year-round options. Late summer and fall can also bring wildfire smoke risk from regional fires.

Its was our first time camping and we are very lucky we found this one. Alex is a great host and explained everything before we departed. We were a little stressed as it was our first time camping in King's Canyon, but Alex made us feel comfortable with the trailer and walked us through everything. The trailer is super neat and clean we didn't have to do anything to set up. We put our stuff in it and it was ready to go which made our trip a lot easier. Alex is very friendly and was available throughout our whole trip in case we had questions and needed help. We will definitely be coming back to Alex for all our camping adventures. Thank you it was a great experience!

We had a great week in the Sequoias using Alex’s trailer. It was extremely clean and had great supplies available. The kids loved their bunkbeds plus the option to sleep on the fold-down dinette area. Communication with Alex was great - he provided lots of helpful details and helped us resolve one minor issue right away. Definitely recommend!

How to book near Plainview
Reservations for campgrounds inside Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are handled through Recreation.gov on a rolling one-month window: sites become available on the 15th of each month at 7:00 a.m. Pacific Time for the following month, and popular grounds like Lodgepole can fill within minutes for summer weekends. Potwisha and the other foothill grounds also use this system, and a small number of in-park campgrounds remain first-come, first-served. Private RV parks near Plainview, including the Visalia / Sequoia National Park KOA Journey, Lemon Cove Village RV Park, and Sequoia Campground and Lodge, take reservations directly through their own websites or third-party booking platforms, often with longer booking windows than the national park. For peak summer and holiday weekends, plan to book the private parks several months out.
What to expect on the ground
Valley-floor parks near Plainview are flat, easy to enter with longer rigs, and typically offer full hookups, pull-throughs, laundry, and Wi-Fi. The Visalia / Sequoia National Park KOA Journey is a standard family-style KOA with a pool, playground, and pull-thru RV sites. Foothill parks like Lemon Cove Village RV Park sit among oak trees with a swimming pool, fenced dog park, and game room, roughly 25 miles from the Sequoia entrance. Sequoia Campground and Lodge in Three Rivers is the closest of these to the park gate, with riverfront sites along the Kaweah. Inside the parks, expect tighter sites, bear-resistant food storage boxes at every site, a 40-foot maximum RV length at Lodgepole, no hookups, and limited cell service. Bring leveling blocks, a generator plan, and food storage discipline.

Expect motorhome rentals to average around $200 per night, while travel trailers and towables typically run closer to $120 per night on RVezy. visitvisalia.com/What license do I need to rent an RV in Plainview, CA?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Plainview. California does not require a special license or commercial endorsement for the Class A, Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels you will find on RVezy. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the platform during booking, so there is no paperwork to chase down. Visiting from overseas? During checkout, you choose the coverage level that fits your trip, whether you are taking a quick Kaweah Lake weekend or a longer motorhome rental Plainview adventure into Sequoia National Park. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Plainview RV trip?
Plans change, and RVezy is built to handle it. RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy for every booking, which means you get consistent, predictable terms no matter which rig you choose for your Plainview RV trip. There is a money-back grace period right after booking, and additional protections may apply for situations like host cancellations, which matter when you are traveling near the Sierra Nevada. The further out you cancel, the more flexibility you have. The cancellation policy is platform-wide and managed by RVezy. Pro tip: book early to lock in summer Sequoia dates, knowing the grace window gives you breathing room.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Plainview RV rental?
Absolutely, plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Plainview travelers swear by. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see rigs whose owners welcome dogs, sometimes for a small cleaning fee. Once you're on the road, your pup will love the wide open Tulare County farmland walks, leashed trails at Lake Kaweah Recreation Area, and the dog-friendly campsites at Sequoia RV Ranch in Three Rivers. Note that dogs aren't allowed on most trails inside Sequoia National Park itself, but the surrounding Sequoia National Forest has plenty of pet-friendly paths. Pro tip: message the host first to confirm size limits and ask about their favorite local dog-walking loop near Visalia.
nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/pets.htmCan the RV be delivered to my campground near Plainview?
Yes, RV delivery Plainview is one of the easiest ways to skip the learning curve, especially if you're a first-timer. Many RVezy hosts will drive the RV straight to your campsite at Visalia Sequoia National Park KOA Journey, Sun and Fun RV Park in Tulare, Sequoia RV Ranch in Three Rivers, or even your own driveway, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system. Use the Delivery filter when you search to see hosts who offer it. Delivery fees vary by distance and RV size, but for a stationary stay near Sequoia, it's often the smartest move. Pro tip: bundle delivery with setup so you arrive to a cold fridge and a made bed.

Kings Canyon National Park sits around 75 miles northeast, while Pismo Beach on the Pacific coast is about 175 miles west, a doable day's drive. Yosemite Valley is about 175 miles north via Highway 41, and Los Angeles is 200 miles south down Highway 99. Pro tip: filter by unlimited mileage if you're planning a multi-park loop so you can wander without watching the odometer.
nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Plainview, CA?
The best campgrounds near Plainview cover everything from full-hookup resorts to riverside Sierra retreats. Sun and Fun RV Park in Tulare sits just off Highway 99, only about 15 minutes away, with full hookups, a year-round pool, and 30 and 50 amp service. Visalia Sequoia National Park KOA Journey is roughly 20 minutes north and packed with family amenities. Sequoia RV Ranch in Three Rivers offers Kaweah River sites just 8 miles from Sequoia's gate. Lemon Cove Village RV Park is 19 miles east of Visalia and a favorite base for park-bound travelers. Horse Creek Campground at Lake Kaweah is open year-round with a dump station. Pro tip: book Sequoia-area sites three to six months ahead for summer.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2727When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Plainview?
Plainview sits in the southern San Joaquin Valley, where summers run hot and winters stay mild, so the sweet spot for RV camping Plainview travelers love is spring (March to May) and fall (September to November). Daytime temperatures in those months hover in a comfortable 65 to 85 degree range, wildflowers bloom along the foothills, and Sequoia's lower elevations are crowd-light. Summer hits the high 90s and occasional triple digits in the valley, though it's noticeably cooler once you climb into Sequoia National Park. Winters are mild at valley elevation with daytime temps in the 50s and 60s. Pro tip: book a shoulder-season trip to score lower nightly rates and snag prime Sequoia campsites.
weather.gov/hnx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Plainview?
You've got this, and you won't be doing it alone. First time renting an RV is the most common scenario on RVezy, and every host walks you through a full orientation at pickup, covering driving tips, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, and the dump process. Plainview is ideal for beginners: flat rural roads, light traffic, and easy access to Highway 99 and Highway 198 for straight-line driving practice before you climb toward Sequoia. If twisty mountain roads worry you, ask your host about the Generals Highway grade and consider basing yourself at a foothill campground instead. Pro tip: choose a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for your first trip, they drive much more like a large van than a bus.
dmv.ca.gov/portal/handbook/california-driver-handbook/What if something breaks down during my Plainview RV trip?
Breathe easy: every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are parked in Plainview, climbing the Generals Highway into Sequoia, or cruising Highway 99 toward Bakersfield. The roadside team handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to a qualified shop. Your host is also a direct line for questions about quirks specific to their rig, like how the awning retracts or which propane valve to use. RVezy customer support is reachable before, during, and after your trip too. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host's contact info in your phone before you leave the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Plainview RV rental across state lines or into Mexico?
An RV road trip from Plainview opens up a huge swath of the American West. Most RVezy hosts welcome interstate travel into Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, and beyond, perfect for loop trips through Death Valley, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, or the Oregon coast. Always confirm with your host before booking long-distance plans, since some set state limits. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage do not extend across the border. Canada travel may be allowed with host approval. Pro tip: a classic loop from Plainview is Highway 99 north to Yosemite, then east over Tioga Pass to Mono Lake and back through Death Valley, about 800 miles of unforgettable scenery.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for and where do I fill up?
Plan smart and fuel becomes a small slice of your trip budget. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A rigs closer to 6 to 10, and campervans and small travel trailers can stretch to 15 to 20 MPG behind a capable tow vehicle. California gas prices run higher than the national average, currently among the highest in the country, so factor that in when budgeting a Plainview RV trip. Plenty of large truck-friendly stations sit along Highway 99 in nearby Tulare and Visalia, where pull-through diesel lanes make filling easy. Pro tip: fuel up in the valley before heading into Sequoia, where mountain station prices jump noticeably.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far in advance should I book a campground near Plainview?
For the best campgrounds near Plainview, the earlier the better, especially if Sequoia or Kings Canyon are on your list. National Park Service campgrounds like Lodgepole, Dorst Creek, and Potwisha open reservations up to six months in advance on Recreation.gov, and prime summer weekends fill within hours of release. Lake Kaweah's Horse Creek Campground also books on Recreation.gov. Private parks like Sun and Fun, Lemon Cove Village, and Sequoia RV Ranch are easier to grab one to two months ahead, though holiday weekends move fast. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly six months before your target date at 7 a.m. Pacific to catch the Recreation.gov release window.
recreation.gov/What are driving conditions like around Plainview?
Driving around Plainview is refreshingly mellow, which makes it a friendly home base for any RV rental California beginner. The valley is flat, straight, and lightly trafficked outside Visalia rush hours, with Highway 99 and Highway 198 handling most RV traffic. The big consideration is heading east toward Sequoia: Generals Highway climbs steeply with tight switchbacks, and vehicles over 22 feet are discouraged on the stretch between Potwisha and Giant Forest. Summer afternoon heat can also reduce engine performance on grades. Winter occasionally brings tule fog to the valley and chain controls in the mountains. Pro tip: enter Sequoia via the Big Stump entrance from Highway 180 if you're driving a larger Class A or Class C, the grade is gentler.
nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/driving-your-rv-or-trailer.htmWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Plainview?
You'll find a wide range to match your style. Full-hookup parks like Sun and Fun RV Park, Visalia Sequoia National Park KOA Journey, and Lemon Cove Village offer 30 and 50 amp power, water, sewer, dump stations, Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools. Lake Kaweah's Horse Creek Campground has flush toilets, showers, an amphitheater, and a dump station but no individual hookups. National Park campgrounds inside Sequoia are typically dry sites with potable water spigots and dump stations at Lodgepole and Potwisha. Pro tip: top off fresh water and dump tanks at your full-hookup park before heading up to the national park, where dump stations can have lines on busy summer mornings.
nps.gov/seki/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmWhat's actually inside the RVs available in Plainview?
RVs on RVezy in the Plainview area come fully equipped for a real home-on-wheels experience. Expect comfortable sleeping for 2 to 10 depending on the rig, a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, plus a bathroom with toilet and shower in most Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, Class A coaches, and travel trailers. Air conditioning is standard, critical for valley summers, along with furnace heat, dinette, and seatbelts for travel passengers. Many include TVs, Wi-Fi boosters, generators, outdoor speakers, and awnings. Campervan rental Plainview options are perfect for couples wanting nimble adventure rigs. Pro tip: check the listing photos and amenities list closely for things like solar, inverters, and tow-vehicle requirements before you book.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-rv-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options can I choose when booking?
RVezy hosts make customizing your trip easy with extras like camp chairs, propane fire pits, generators, bedding and linens packages, kitchen kits, bike racks, kayaks, and even Starlink Wi-Fi setups. Pickup happens at the host's address in or near Plainview, and many also offer delivery to your campground for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary by host, anywhere from 100 free miles per day to unlimited, with extra miles billed at a per-mile rate clearly shown on the listing. Pro tip: if you're planning a Sequoia and Yosemite combo, calculate your round-trip miles before booking and pick a host whose mileage allowance covers your route, it's almost always cheaper than paying overage.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/recreational-vehicle-rvHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and fully handled inside RVezy, so you never hand cash or a paper check to a host. You will pay your booking total securely online when you reserve, and a refundable security deposit, separate from your booking payment and typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV, is authorized on your card before pickup. As long as the rig comes back in the same condition with the tanks and fuel handled per the listing, the deposit is released after your trip. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos and a quick video walk-around at both pickup and drop-off, it is the easiest way to avoid any deposit disputes and keep your Plainview RV trip stress-free.
