Campgrounds and RV parks near Prunedale, CA

The Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, and the 17-Mile Drive sit roughly 20 to 30 minutes south. Marina State Beach, Fort Ord Dunes State Park, and the Monterey Bay Coastal Trail give RV renters easy walking, biking, and surf access along the bay. Elkhorn Slough, near Moss Landing, is a protected estuary popular for kayaking and otter watching. Inland, Old Town Salinas and the National Steinbeck Center cover local history, and San Juan Bautista preserves a mission and historic plaza. Fremont Peak State Park has hiking to a summit above 3,100 feet and a public observatory with a 30-inch telescope open on select Saturday evenings from April through October. McAlpine Lake and Park stocks trout, catfish, bluegill, and sturgeon, and no California fishing license is required on the private lake.

The Central Coast around Prunedale runs on a Mediterranean climate: dry summers, mild wet winters, and very little snow at low elevations. Spring brings the most reliable mix of mild temperatures, green hills, and lower campground demand. It also overlaps with the start of the Fremont Peak Observatory public program season, which runs on Saturday evenings from April through October. Summer is the busiest stretch. Coastal sites at Marina Dunes RV Park and Moss Landing KOA Express fill weeks ahead, especially around Independence Day and the California Rodeo Salinas in July. Mornings near the coast are often foggy, with clearing by afternoon, while inland sites at McAlpine Lake and Park and Fremont Peak run noticeably warmer and clearer. Fall stays mild and dry into November and is a strong shoulder season for both coastal and inland trips. Winter is the wet season, with most rainfall arriving December through February. Fremont Peak can be cold and windy at elevation, and wood and charcoal fires may be banned during declared fire season.

Expect a sharp split between coastal and inland conditions. Coastal parks near Marina and Moss Landing are cool, breezy, and often fog-bound in the morning, even when inland Salinas is sunny and warm. Layered clothing is essential. Highway noise is a known factor at Salinas / Monterey KOA, which sits next to Highway 101, and at Marina Dunes RV Park, where sites near Highway 1 hear traffic at night. Hookups are full at the KOA, Marina Dunes RV Park, and McAlpine Lake and Park. Fremont Peak State Park is primitive: pit toilets, drinking water, fire rings, no showers, and no hookups, and the access road climbs a narrow, winding grade not suited to large rigs. Wildlife in the area includes deer, raccoons, and occasional mountain lions, so store food securely.
