Camping near Reliez Valley
Reliez Valley is a small census-designated place in Contra Costa County, California, tucked between Lafayette, Pleasant Hill, and Martinez in the East Bay. The community itself has no campgrounds, but it sits within a short drive of state parks, regional preserves, and full-hookup RV parks that serve the wider San Francisco Bay Area.
The closest public option is Benicia State Recreation Area on the Carquinez Strait, which offers a small set of enroute sites for fully self-contained RVs. Inland, Live Oak Campground inside Mount Diablo State Park provides developed drive-in sites in a wooded glen at about 1,450 feet, reachable from Reliez Valley in under an hour. For full hookups and big-rig access, Tradewinds RV Park and Vallejo RV Park sit just across the strait in Vallejo, while Candlestick RV Park puts travelers within a few miles of downtown San Francisco. The mix suits RV renters who want a quiet East Bay base with day-trip access to wine country, Mount Diablo, and the city.
Things to do near Reliez Valley
Mount Diablo State Park is the headline outdoor destination, with the summit road, sandstone formations at Rock City, and a dense trail network spreading out from Live Oak Campground. The Iron Horse Regional Trail runs through nearby Walnut Creek and Pleasant Hill for flat family cycling. Briones Regional Park, just west of the valley, offers ridgeline hikes and grassland wildlife viewing.
On the water side, Benicia State Recreation Area covers marsh, grassy hillsides and rocky beaches along the narrowest portion of the Carquinez Strait, with about two and a half miles of road and bike paths, picnicking, bird watching and fishing, with shoreline fishing at Dillon Point. Day trips reach Napa Valley wineries in under 45 minutes, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, and the Vallejo to San Francisco ferry for car-free city visits.

The area has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Spring, from March through May, is the strongest season for camping: green hills, wildflowers across Mount Diablo, comfortable daytime highs, and cool nights. Spring wildflowers are excellent, though weekends get crowded during peak bloom, and reservations at Live Oak Campground fill quickly once they open six months out.
Summer is hot and dry. Inland temperatures regularly exceed 100°F, making early morning the most comfortable time for trails, while bayside parks like Benicia stay cooler thanks to marine breezes. Fire risk runs high from late summer into fall, and red-flag closures or campfire bans are possible. Fall brings the best conditions, with daytime temps in the 65 to 85°F range and cool nights, making September and October excellent for both inland and waterfront stays.
Winter is the wet season, with most annual rain falling December through February. Mount Diablo can see occasional snow at higher elevations, and some private RV parks slow down but stay open year-round.

How to book in Reliez Valley
Public campgrounds in California state parks, including Live Oak at Mount Diablo State Park, are booked through ReserveCalifornia.com. Reservations can be booked up to 6 months in advance, and weekend sites book out quickly in spring and fall. Midweek stays are far easier to secure, and last-minute cancellations frequently appear on Friday and Saturday mornings.
Benicia State Recreation Area is different: its three enroute sites are first-come, first-served with no reservations possible, limited to fully self-contained motorhomes or trailers, and tents are not permitted. Private parks such as Tradewinds RV Park, Vallejo RV Park, and Candlestick RV Park take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and tend to have wider availability for big rigs and longer stays.
What to expect in Reliez Valley
Expect a mix of urban-edge RV parks and developed state park campgrounds rather than remote backcountry. Live Oak Campground occupies a pleasantly wooded glen at 1,450 feet elevation, making it the lowest of Mount Diablo State Park's drive-in campgrounds, with 22 campsites, potable water and flush toilets, picnic tables and fire rings, but no hookups and limited cell service. Gates close at sunset and reopen at 8:00 AM.
Benicia State Recreation Area is best treated as a safe overnight stopover for self-contained RVs, not a destination campground: three designated spots for self-contained vehicles, with departure required by 9 AM. Tradewinds RV Park offers full hook-ups with 30 to 50 amp service and pull-thru sites that accommodate RVs up to 45 feet in length, with complimentary Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, restrooms and showers; Vallejo and Candlestick RV Parks offer similar full-service setups. Freeway noise is common at the private parks given their urban locations.

That means you skip towing through the Caldecott Tunnel or backing into a tight site near Lafayette BART. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts offering this service, fees are usually a flat rate plus per mile beyond a set radius. parks.ca.gov/mountdiabloI have never driven an RV before, will I be okay?
You are going to do great, first time renting an RV is way less intimidating than it sounds, especially in the Reliez Valley area. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup: how to level the rig, run the generator, dump tanks, and use the propane. Most first timers in Contra Costa County stick to easier campgrounds like Anthony Chabot or Del Valle for trip one, then graduate to Mount Diablo or Yosemite. Choose a Class C or travel trailer under 25 feet to keep handling simple, and consider delivery so you skip driving altogether on day one. Your host is just a message away during the trip, and 24/7 roadside assistance backs you up if anything feels off.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy rental includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so whether you have a flat on Highway 4 heading toward the Delta, a dead battery at a Mount Diablo overlook, or a stuck slide out at Del Valle, one call gets a technician dispatched. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app for the small stuff like how to switch the water heater to electric. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip too. Pro tip: snap a quick photo of the host's orientation walkthrough so you can reference it later, especially the generator and tank dump steps.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Reliez Valley RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Cross state road trips are absolutely on the table, this is one of the best things about renting an RV in California. From Reliez Valley you can easily roll into Nevada (Lake Tahoe, Reno, Great Basin), Oregon (Crater Lake is about 8 hours), Arizona (Grand Canyon in roughly 12 hours), or Utah's mighty five parks. Most hosts on RVezy allow travel throughout the United States, and some permit trips into Canada with advance approval, just message the listing before booking. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend across the southern border. Popular multi state runs from here include the Pacific Coast Highway and the Sierra Nevada loop.
nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/directions.htmWhat should I budget for fuel on a Reliez Valley RV trip?
California gas prices run higher than the national average, currently around $4.80 to $5.30 per gallon in the East Bay, so it's smart to budget fuel into your trip plan. A Class C motorhome typically gets 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A coaches 6 to 10, and a truck pulling a travel trailer 10 to 14. For a 4 day, 400 mile loop to Yosemite from Reliez Valley, plan roughly $180 to $250 in fuel. Costco in Concord and Martinez consistently has the cheapest gas nearby, and many diesel pulls stop at the Pilot in Fairfield on the way to Tahoe. GasBuddy is your best friend on the road.
energy.ca.gov/data-reports/energy-almanac/transportation-energy/california-retail-fuel-outlet-annual-reportingHow far ahead should I book a campground near Reliez Valley?
Book early, this is one of the most camped regions in California. Mount Diablo State Park opens reservations 6 months ahead on ReserveCalifornia.com, and summer weekends fill within hours of release. East Bay Regional Park District campgrounds (Anthony Chabot, Del Valle, Dumbarton Quarry) release on a rolling 12 week window via ReserveAmerica.com or 1-888-EBPARKS. For Yosemite, mark your calendar: campsites release in one month blocks 5 months in advance on Recreation.gov at 7 a.m. Pacific. Insider tip for last minute trips: midweek availability is dramatically better, and Dumbarton Quarry often has openings even on Bay Area summer weekends since it's newer and less famous.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the driving conditions like around Reliez Valley?
Driving an RV around Reliez Valley is very manageable if you plan smart. Local roads like Pleasant Hill Road and Reliez Valley Road are residential and easy, but the Caldecott Tunnel on Highway 24 has a 14 foot clearance (no issue for any standard RV) and Bay Area traffic peaks 7 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m., so depart outside those windows. Mount Diablo's summit road is steep with tight switchbacks, the park limits rigs to 20 to 27 feet depending on campground. Heading east on I 580 toward the Altamont Pass, expect strong crosswinds. Towed trailers and RVs are limited to 55 mph statewide on California highways.
dot.ca.gov/programs/traffic-operations/legal-truck-accessWhat amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Reliez Valley?
Local campgrounds run the gamut from primitive to fully loaded. Anthony Chabot offers 12 full hookup sites (30 amp electric, water, sewer), hot showers, flush toilets, and an on site dump station. Del Valle has water and electric hookups plus a dump station and camp store. Mount Diablo State Park is more rustic, picnic tables, fire rings, flush toilets, and showers at Live Oak and Juniper, but no hookups, so you'll boondock with your onboard tanks. Need to dump or refill water mid trip? Anthony Chabot's dump station is $20 for non campers, and most Flying J and Pilot truck stops along I 80 have free or cheap dump access for travelers.
ebparks.org/parks/anthony-chabot/campingWhat is typically included inside a Reliez Valley RV rental?

Expect sleeping space for 2 to 8 (queen beds, bunks, or convertible dinettes), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control via roof AC and furnace, and seatbelted seats for travel. Many local listings include a generator, solar setup, awning, outdoor speakers, and a TV. Wifi and streaming are common in newer Class B campervans, ideal for the campervan rental Reliez Valley crowd who work remotely. Look for the Festival Friendly filter if you are heading to Outside Lands or BottleRock, those rigs come stocked for off grid stays. Hosts list every amenity right on the listing page.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Reliez%20Valley%2C%20CaliforniaWhat add ons and pickup options do hosts offer in Reliez Valley?

Common add ons include bedding and linen packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, generator hours, bike racks, kayak racks, camping chairs, propane fills, and pet packages. parks.ca.gov/mountdiabloHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure: you pay through RVezy's platform when you book, never directly to the host in cash, which protects you and keeps everything covered under the protection plan. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and released after your trip ends, assuming no damage. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkthrough video at pickup, photograph any existing dings, and return the RV at the agreed fuel and tank levels, hosts in the Reliez Valley area typically ask you to return with empty grey and black tanks. Honest communication with your host is the secret to a smooth deposit return every time.
