Campgrounds and RV parks near Ridgemark, CA

Off-roading is the headline activity at Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreational Area, with separate areas for motorcycles and ATVs, four-wheel-drive vehicles, and non-motorized use including hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Fremont Peak State Park offers a short summit hike with panoramas over Monterey Bay and the Salinas Valley, plus a public observatory with a 30-inch telescope used for periodic star parties. McAlpine Lake and Park provides stocked-pond fishing close to town. Historic San Juan Bautista, with its mission and preserved old town, sits a short drive west and pairs well with a stop at Casa de Fruta RV Orchard Resort for its fruit stand, restaurant, and family attractions. Wineries along Cienega Road and the Pinnacles National Park entrance to the south round out longer day trips.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV camping near Ridgemark. From March through May, daytime highs climb into the 60s and 70s Fahrenheit, hillsides green up, and wildflowers appear across the Gabilan Range, including the grasslands around Fremont Peak State Park. Reservation pressure rises through spring as weekenders return. Summer brings hot, dry, and very sunny conditions, with afternoon highs frequently in the 80s and 90s. Fire restrictions are common across California state parks during this period, and wood or charcoal fires at Fremont Peak State Park can be banned during fire season. Coastal fog often burns off by midday inland. Fall stays warm into October with clear nights ideal for the Fremont Peak Observatory's programs, which typically run on selected Saturday evenings from spring through early fall. Winter is the wet season. Rain is concentrated from December through February, trails turn muddy at Hollister Hills, and overnight lows can drop near freezing at higher elevations. Many private RV resorts stay open year-round.

Expect a clear split between primitive state-park sites and full-service commercial parks. Fremont Peak State Park has 25 primitive, oak-shaded sites with tables, fire rings, pit toilets, and drinking water, but no showers and no hookups. Roads in are narrow and winding, which limits very long rigs. Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreational Area campgrounds are spread across the property and busy with off-road activity during the day; motorized riding stops at sunset, and hot showers and flush toilets serve campers in the Lower Ranch area. Casa de Fruta RV Orchard Resort and San Benito RV and Camping Resort offer paved or graveled pull-throughs, full hookups, Wi-Fi, pools, and easy highway access suitable for larger motorhomes. Cell service is generally good closer to Hollister and patchy at Fremont Peak. Pack layers; inland heat by day can give way to cool nights, particularly at elevation.
