Campgrounds and RV parks near Salinas, CA

The Monterey Peninsula is the headline draw: the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, 17-Mile Drive in Pebble Beach, and the shoreline at Point Lobos State Natural Reserve are all within a short drive. Closer to the coast, Marina State Beach and Fort Ord Dunes State Park offer hiking, beach walks, and direct ocean access. Pinnacles National Park, roughly 50 miles southeast, has rock formations, talus caves, and trails where California condors are often visible overhead. In Salinas itself, the National Steinbeck Center and Old Town highlight John Steinbeck's connection to the valley. Fremont Peak State Park draws stargazers to its public observatory programs, and Elkhorn Slough near Moss Landing is well known for kayaking, otters, and seabird viewing.

Salinas has a mild Mediterranean climate with a dry summer and a wet winter. Coastal fog, locally called the marine layer, is common from late spring through summer mornings and tends to burn off by midday, then return in the evening. Inland sites such as Fremont Peak typically run several degrees warmer than the coast and clear of fog sooner. Summer is peak season for the Monterey coast. Weekends fill quickly at coastal RV parks, and reservations at popular state parks should be made well in advance through ReserveCalifornia. Fall brings the warmest, clearest weather of the year along the shoreline and is a strong shoulder-season choice for RV travel, with thinner crowds after Labor Day. Winter is the wet season, with most rainfall arriving between November and March. Cool temperatures and storms can affect mountain roads. At Fremont Peak, wood and charcoal fires are banned at all times due to the lack of water at the park, so plan to cook on a propane or gas stove. Spring brings wildflowers in the Gabilan Range and at Pinnacles.

Hookups and amenities vary widely. Salinas / Monterey KOA offers 30 and 50 amp service, full and partial hookups, laundry, showers, a swimming pool, and a camp store, with sites suited to larger RVs. Marina Dunes RV Park provides full hookups, a clubhouse, fitness room, dog park, playground, and direct sandy-path access to Marina State Beach. Both coastal parks sit close to highways, so some road noise is normal. Fremont Peak is the opposite end of the spectrum: 25 primitive sites with tables, fire rings, pit toilets, and drinking water, but no hookups or dump station. The access road is narrow and winding, and RVs longer than 25 feet are not recommended. Cell coverage is reliable in the valley and patchy in the hills.
