Camping near Sausalito
Sausalito sits at the north foot of the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County, with San Francisco Bay on one side and the protected lands of the Marin Headlands and Mount Tamalpais on the other. RV options inside the city itself are limited, so most travelers base out of full-hookup parks a short drive away and use Sausalito as a day-trip hub.
Close-in private RV parks include Golden Gate Trailer Park and Marin Park in the immediate North Bay corridor, plus Marin RV Park further up Highway 101. Across the bay in San Francisco, Candlestick RV Park and Treasure Island MH and RV Park give RV travelers access to the city without driving the bridge daily. Tent and walk-in camping is concentrated in the surrounding public lands: the Golden Gate National Recreation Area runs small campgrounds in the Marin Headlands, and Mount Tamalpais State Park and Samuel P. Taylor State Park add redwood and coastal sites within roughly 30 minutes to an hour of town.
Things to do in Sausalito
Sausalito itself is walkable: a waterfront promenade, ferry terminal, and views straight across to San Francisco. The ferry from downtown Sausalito to the Ferry Building or Fisherman's Wharf is the easiest way to see the city without parking an RV in town. Angel Island State Park is reachable by ferry from nearby Tiburon and offers hiking and historic sites with bay views.
North and west of town, Muir Woods National Monument protects old-growth coastal redwoods and requires advance parking or shuttle reservations. The Marin Headlands deliver the postcard view of the Golden Gate Bridge from Battery Spencer and Hawk Hill, plus trails to Point Bonita Lighthouse. Mount Tamalpais State Park adds longer hikes and panoramic ridgeline drives.

Marin County has a Mediterranean climate with a sharp wet-dry split. The rainy season runs roughly November through March, with most annual precipitation falling in those months and the wettest stretch typically in December and January. State park campgrounds stay open year-round, but creek-side sites can be muddy and some Golden Gate National Recreation Area sites have seasonal closures: Kirby Cove in the Marin Headlands is typically closed from December through early March.
Late spring through early fall, roughly May to October, is the most reliable camping window, with mild temperatures and minimal rain. Summer brings the famous Bay Area marine layer: heavy morning and evening fog at the coast, often burning off by midday inland. September and October are usually the warmest, clearest months and also a peak stretch of California wildfire season, so check Cal Fire and park alerts before travel. Coastal sites can be windy any time of year.

Angel 😇 Life Saver ⛑️ Great Communication 📲📞 Informative 📚 PUNCTUAL ⏳️ Just a few words to describe this wonderful Host. When my prior host backed out and canceled on me the day of (There was no communication up til 48hrs before trip, and stopped again the morning of. I reached out for clarification and location, no response! Moments later Rveezy tells me the host is no longer comfortable with accommodating us) Evgeniy not only responed within 5min of me reachout out, but had us out and on the road to enjoy out trip within an hour. The vehicle is perfect, clean and easy to function. We had never driven or worked an RV before but his quick rundown and eargeness to answer any questions helped put out minds at ease. He is so kind, professonal, and absolutely Amazing 🤩. We will definitely rent from him again despite our extra charges for not having time to thoroughly clean out and fill up; but that was a very small price to pay for what we would have missed if he hadn't come to help us out of a pickle. They only gave the options of 5 stars so I'll leave the rest here : ✨️⭐️🌟⭐️✨️⭐️🌟✨️⭐️🌟⭐️✨️⭐️🌟✨️⭐️🌟⭐️✨️🌟⭐️✨️🌟⭐️✨️🌟✨️⭐️🌟✨️⭐️🌟⭐️✨️🌟⭐️✨️🌟⭐️✨️🌟⭐️✨️

How to book Sausalito campgrounds
Private RV parks near Sausalito, including Golden Gate Trailer Park, Marin Park, Marin RV Park, Candlestick RV Park, and Treasure Island MH and RV Park, are booked directly with each property by phone or website. Demand is steady year-round because of the city's proximity, so reserve as early as possible for weekends and any summer or holiday dates.
Public campgrounds use two systems. Golden Gate National Recreation Area sites in the Marin Headlands, including Kirby Cove and Bicentennial, are reserved through Recreation.gov on a rolling window up to six months ahead, with a limit of three nights per season at Kirby Cove and no RV access at any of these walk-in sites. California state parks, including Mount Tamalpais and Samuel P. Taylor, are reserved through ReserveCalifornia up to six months in advance on a rolling daily window. The Steep Ravine Cabins at Mount Tamalpais use a lottery-style drawing because of high demand, with applications accepted up to eight months out.
What to expect
RV access in the immediate Sausalito waterfront is tight: narrow streets, hills, and limited parking make it impractical to drive a large rig into the village. Plan to leave the RV at the campground and use the ferry, bicycles, or a tow vehicle for sightseeing. The Golden Gate Bridge has a toll for southbound traffic into San Francisco, collected electronically.
Most public campgrounds in the area are tent-oriented with no hookups, vault toilets, and food storage required because of raccoons and other wildlife. RV travelers who want full hookups, dump stations, and laundry will need a private park. Coastal fog can leave gear damp overnight, cell service is spotty in the Headlands and on Mount Tamalpais, and firewood should be purchased locally to limit invasive pests.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sausalito,CaliforniaWhere can I park or camp with my RV around Sausalito?

Book early for summer weekends, and reserve Kirby Cove on Recreation.gov as soon as your dates open.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Sausalito RV rental across state lines or into Canada?

Travel into Mexico is not permitted. Trips into Canada may be allowed depending on the host, the RV, and your protection plan, so confirm in writing with your host before booking. Always review the host's travel rules on the listing page.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow should I budget for fuel on a Sausalito RV trip?
RV fuel economy in California typically averages 8-12 mpg for motorhomes and 15-20 mpg for campervans. Marin County gas prices generally run higher than the U.S. average, so check current local prices before you leave and top off in Mill Valley or Novato before remote stretches like Highway 1 north or Point Reyes. Plan efficient loops rather than backtracking, and ask your host whether the RV uses gasoline or diesel so you budget accurately.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Sausalito and what is the best way to reserve?
Campgrounds near Sausalito fill quickly, especially from May through September. For sought-after sites like Kirby Cove and other Golden Gate National Recreation Area campgrounds, book up to 6 months in advance on Recreation.gov. For California State Parks like Samuel P. Taylor or Mount Tamalpais, use ReserveCalifornia.com on the same 6-month rolling window. Shoulder season and weekday stays offer easier last-minute availability and more spacious sites for family RV trips.
recreation.gov/What are local driving conditions like for RVs in Sausalito and Marin County?
Sausalito's main roads are manageable for most RVs, but downtown streets along Bridgeway can be narrow and busy, so larger rigs should avoid the waterfront core when possible. Highway 101 is smooth and RV-friendly, though Bay Area rush hour can be slow. Many renters choose RV delivery to skip tight city sections and start their trip from a campground. North on Highway 1 you will find winding, scenic stretches that are best suited to smaller motorhomes and campervan rentals.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/What amenities can I expect at Sausalito-area RV parks and campgrounds?
