RV camping near Stanford, California
Stanford sits on the San Francisco Peninsula in the heart of Silicon Valley, roughly midway between San Francisco and San Jose. RV options in the immediate area are limited because the surrounding cities are densely built out, so most travelers split their trip between a full-hookup urban park close to campus and a redwood-forest site in the Santa Cruz Mountains or along the San Mateo coast.
Trailer Villa RV Park in Redwood City sits between San Francisco and San Jose with easy access to Stanford University, offers full hookup sites, and is big-rig and pet friendly. For a forest experience under an hour away, Main - Portola Redwoods State Park has a 55-site family campground, four group campsites, and a trail camp for backpackers. On the coast, Half Moon Bay RV Park puts travelers within reach of the Pacific, about 45 minutes from campus over Highway 92. Two Big Basin Redwoods State Park campgrounds, Huckleberry - Big Basin Redwoods State Park and Sempervirens - Big Basin Redwoods State Park, appear in legacy booking systems but the park's traditional campgrounds were destroyed in the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex Fire and have not reopened.
Things to do near Stanford
Stanford itself anchors the day-trip list: the campus arboretum, the Cantor Arts Center, the Dish hiking loop in the foothills, and Hoover Tower are all free or low-cost and family-friendly. Downtown Palo Alto and California Avenue add walkable dining within minutes of campus.
Redwood country starts a short drive west. Portola Redwoods features 18 miles of hiking trails through coast redwoods, with waterfalls along Fall Creek and Pescadero Creek. Big Basin reopened in 2022 for limited day-use access through a reservation system, and segments of the Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail and access to Sempervirens Falls have been restored. On the coast, Half Moon Bay State Beach, Pillar Point Harbor tide pools, and the Mavericks viewpoint round out an easy beach day. Año Nuevo State Park, an hour south, draws families in winter for the elephant seal rookery.

The Peninsula has a mild Mediterranean climate, so RV travel is realistic year-round, but each season comes with trade-offs.
Spring brings green hills, wildflowers, and comfortable temperatures, with rainfall tapering through May. It is a strong window for combining campus visits with redwood hikes before the summer crowds. Summer is dry and warm inland, but the coast at Half Moon Bay often sits under a marine fog layer that can keep daytime highs in the 60s well into August. Booking pressure peaks from June through Labor Day, and coastal state-park sites typically sell out the moment the six-month window opens. Fall is often the best season: warm clear days, lower fire risk after the first rains, fewer reservations, and pumpkin festivals on the coast in October.
Winter is the rainy season. Mountain roads to Portola Redwoods are steep and winding, storms can drop trees across access routes, and the campground at Portola typically operates April through October. Urban full-hookup parks stay open year-round.

How to book campgrounds near Stanford
State park sites use ReserveCalifornia. Reservations can be booked up to six months in advance of the arrival date on a rolling window, and inventory becomes available on ReserveCalifornia.com each day at 8 a.m. PST. Due to high demand, reservations for popular coastal beaches and redwood campgrounds can disappear within minutes, so set a calendar reminder for exactly six months out and be logged in before the window opens.
Private parks book directly. Trailer Villa RV Park takes reservations by phone and through its website, and Half Moon Bay RV Park handles bookings independently of the state system. Big Basin Redwoods State Park currently operates a limited day-use reservation system through Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks; the Huckleberry and Sempervirens campgrounds remain closed pending the park's long-term rebuild.
What to expect at Stanford-area campgrounds
Urban Peninsula parks deliver convenience, not scenery. Trailer Villa offers clean, well-kept grounds with parking pads that make maneuvering large rigs easy, a straightforward check-in, and a quiet atmosphere at night, but sites sit close together and freeway noise can be audible.
State-park sites in the Santa Cruz Mountains are the opposite: deep forest, no hookups, and limited connectivity. The road into Portola is steep and winding, the drive runs about 1.5 to 2 hours from most Bay Area locations, there is no gasoline at or near the park, no store nearby, and no cell reception in the canyon. RVs up to 24 feet and trailers up to 21 feet are allowed at specific sites, but there are no hookups. Plan to arrive fueled, watered, and provisioned. Coastal parks add wind and fog, so pack layers even in July.
