Campgrounds near Strathmore, California
Strathmore is a small Tulare County community in California's San Joaquin Valley, sitting at about 400 feet of elevation roughly 19 miles southeast of Visalia. The town itself is residential, but it works well as a quiet base for RV trips into the southern Sierra Nevada. Most travelers point their rigs east toward Highway 198 and the Three Rivers corridor, which leads to Kaweah Lake and the Ash Mountain entrance of Sequoia National Park.
Nearby RV options run from full-hookup parks in the foothills to lakeside camping. Lodgepole sits at 6,700 feet inside the park, while Lemon Cove Village RV Park is positioned along the Highway 198 corridor on the way to the Sequoia entrance and includes pull-through sites, laundry, and a dog area, plus a seasonal Sequoia Shuttle stop. Sequoia RV Ranch and Sequoia Campground and Lodge offer river-adjacent stays closer to Three Rivers, while Royal Palms and Country Manor Mobile Home Community serve travelers looking for longer-term valley stays.
Things to do near Strathmore
The main draw is Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. From an RV base in the foothills, day trips reach the Giant Forest, the General Sherman Tree, and the Tokopah Falls trailhead near Lodgepole. Crystal Cave guided tours operate from May 22 through November 1, offering visitors a chance to explore the only cave open to the public in Sequoia National Park, and tickets are sold through the Sequoia Parks Conservancy. The Generals Highway has length restrictions for larger vehicles above the foothills, so most RV travelers drive in with a tow vehicle.
Kaweah Lake, about 20 miles east of Visalia on CA 198, is the closest water recreation. Lake Kaweah provides opportunities for boating, water skiing, sailing, and fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, catfish, and rainbow trout, with a marina at Lemon Hill for rentals and supplies. The Kaweah River near Three Rivers is used for swimming, fishing, and whitewater rafting.

December - February

Strathmore sits in a semi-arid pocket of the San Joaquin Valley, so the valley itself is mild and dry most of the year while the Sierra above it follows a very different schedule. Summers in the valley and foothills are hot and rain is almost nonexistent in July and August, which is the busiest stretch for Sequoia campgrounds and shuttle service. Higher park campgrounds like Lodgepole sit near 6,700 feet and stay cool, so many RV travelers base in the foothills and drive up for the day.
Spring brings green hills, wildflowers, and rising water at Kaweah Lake. Horse Creek at Kaweah Lake faces seasonal flooding during summer months when lake levels rise, temporarily closing lower sites, and parts of the campground may be flooded during periods of high water in late spring. Winters are cool and damp by valley standards, with the wettest months from December through February. Snow can close the Generals Highway above the foothills, and chain controls are common in the upper park.

Its was our first time camping and we are very lucky we found this one. Alex is a great host and explained everything before we departed. We were a little stressed as it was our first time camping in King's Canyon, but Alex made us feel comfortable with the trailer and walked us through everything. The trailer is super neat and clean we didn't have to do anything to set up. We put our stuff in it and it was ready to go which made our trip a lot easier. Alex is very friendly and was available throughout our whole trip in case we had questions and needed help. We will definitely be coming back to Alex for all our camping adventures. Thank you it was a great experience!

We had a great week in the Sequoias using Alex’s trailer. It was extremely clean and had great supplies available. The kids loved their bunkbeds plus the option to sleep on the fold-down dinette area. Communication with Alex was great - he provided lots of helpful details and helped us resolve one minor issue right away. Definitely recommend!

How to book campsites in the area
In-park sites at Sequoia and Kings Canyon are booked through Recreation.gov on a rolling one-month window, with reservations opening on the 15th of each month at 7:00 a.m. Pacific Time for arrivals one month out. Popular campgrounds like Lodgepole fill within minutes of reservations opening. Potwisha in the foothills and Azalea in Grant Grove are the only two campgrounds open year-round.
Horse Creek at Kaweah Lake is open year-round with reservations available through Recreation.gov. Private parks such as Lemon Cove Village RV Park, Sequoia RV Ranch, and Sequoia Campground and Lodge take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and summer weekends should be booked well ahead.
What to expect on the ground
Foothill campgrounds along the Highway 198 corridor are generally easy to reach for larger rigs, with pull-throughs and full hookups common at private parks. Lemon Cove Village RV Park offers 30/50-amp sites, a pool, laundry, restrooms, a dump station, and a fenced dog area, and serves as a Sequoia Shuttle stop in summer. Sites in the foothills tend to be gravel, and some are not perfectly level, so leveling blocks are useful.
Horse Creek features 80 non-hookup sites spread across multiple loops, with a broad, arid setting and limited tree cover and shade; flush toilets, showers, and a dump station are on site. Inside the parks, expect required bear-resistant food storage, narrow winding roads, and vehicle length limits on portions of the Generals Highway that effectively cap many sites for smaller rigs.
