From a bayside base such as Trailer Villa RV Park, Sunnyvale puts South Bay tech-town attractions, baylands trails, and Stanford-area destinations within a short drive. Redwood City sits between San Francisco and San Jose with easy access to Stanford University, major tech campuses, Levi's Stadium, and the Great America amusement park, making it a workable base for sports games and city day trips. West of the city, the draw is redwoods. The 2,800-acre Portola Redwoods park features 18 miles of hiking trails along meandering creeks where coast redwoods stand tall among ferns and huckleberries, with waterfalls on Fall Creek and Pescadero Creek. At Big Basin, day visitors can again reach the Redwood Loop Trail and segments of the Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail, though all overnight facilities remain closed.

The drive to Portola is slow and winding: use low gear because the access roads are steep, expect roughly a 1.5 to 2 hour drive from most Bay Area locations, and note that there is no gasoline and no store at or near the park. There is also no cell reception within the park or surrounding area. The main campground at Portola has flush toilets, drinking water, paid coin-op showers, a campfire center, a camp host, and a weekend visitor center, but no hookups and no dump station. Plan to arrive with a full tank, full water, and supplies.
