Campgrounds and RV parks near Tara Hills, CA

Tara Hills puts most of the Bay Area within day-trip range. From Vallejo, the San Francisco Bay Ferry connects to the Ferry Building and Fisherman's Wharf, removing the need to drive an RV into the city. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom sits a few minutes north of Tradewinds RV Park and works well for families with kids. Benicia State Recreation Area covers marsh, grassy hillsides and rocky beaches along the narrowest portion of the Carquinez Strait, with cyclists, runners, walkers, equestrians, and roller skaters using the park's 2 1/2 miles of road and bike paths. The marshland area on Dillon's Point is a particularly favorite place for fishing. Wine country in Napa and Sonoma is a short drive north, and Point Reyes National Seashore, Muir Woods, and Stinson Beach are reachable from the Greenbrae-based parks.

The Tara Hills area has a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Richmond's average annual precipitation is about 534 mm (21 inches), with most of it concentrated between November and March and very little rain from June through September. Summer afternoons inland of the bay are warm and clear, while marine fog can push in across San Pablo Bay overnight and burn off by late morning. Peak RV travel season runs from late spring through early fall, when most Bay Area sightseeing happens and ferry schedules are at their fullest. Private parks like Tradewinds RV Park, Vallejo RV Park, Marin Park, and Marin RV Park stay open year-round, so winter stays are possible if the trip can absorb rainy stretches. Benicia State Recreational Area takes a different approach: its limited enroute RV spots are first-come, first-served and intended for single-night stays, with no advance booking. Wildfire smoke can affect air quality in late summer and early fall during active fire seasons across Northern California, so checking AirNow before travel is worthwhile.

Most parks in this corridor are urban RV parks rather than wooded campgrounds. Sites are typically level gravel pads close together, with full hookups, 30/50-amp service, Wi-Fi, cable, laundry, and hot showers. Tradewinds RV Park offers 78 RV sites of various sizes, including large pull-throughs, all with level gravel beds, full hook ups, 30-50 amp service, and pull-thru sites that can take RVs up to 45 feet. Marin Park features 87 full hookup campsites, is big-rig accessible, pet-friendly, and offers free WiFi and cable, with a heated pool and walk-on ferry access to San Francisco from Larkspur. Expect highway noise at parks along I-80 and Highway 101, limited shade, and tight maneuvering at some sites. Cell coverage is strong throughout the area. Grocery stores, fuel, and propane are easy to reach. Benicia State Recreation Area has no electric or water hookups, though a water faucet and trash cans are available, and each spot comes with a picnic table, suiting only self-contained rigs.
