Campgrounds and RV parks near West Bishop, CA

Bishop Creek Canyon, southwest of town, holds a chain of lakes and streams stocked with rainbow, brown, brook, and Alpers trout. Anglers also drive north to Crowley Lake, a large reservoir with roughly 45 miles of shoreline that is known for trophy rainbows and a famous opening-day scene. The Volcanic Tableland north of Bishop is the regional bouldering hub, with the Happy Boulders and Sad Boulders drawing climbers in cooler months. Several public petroglyph sites carved into Bishop Tuff are accessible on Fish Slough Road and near Chalfant. Hikers can reach the John Muir Wilderness and the Palisade Glaciers from the Glacier Lodge trailhead above Big Pine. Soaking at the Keoughs hot springs pool is a popular off-day activity. Around Memorial Day weekend, Bishop hosts Mule Days, a multi-day festival with a large non-motorized parade.

The Bishop area is high desert backed by alpine country, so elevation drives the calendar. Valley-floor parks near West Bishop, including J Diamond Mobile Ranch, Creekside RV Park, and Keoughs Hot Springs and Campground, stay open year-round, though winter nights run cold and the Sierra crest is buried in snow. The Crowley Lake fishing season is the last Saturday in April through July 31, and from August 1 through November 15 only artificial lures may be used, with a minimum size limit of 18 inches. Most Forest Service campgrounds in Bishop Creek Canyon operate from roughly April or May into September or October, with exact dates tied to snowmelt and road conditions. Summer brings hot valley days, cool nights at elevation, and reliable access to high-country trails and lakes. Fall delivers cottonwood and aspen color along the creeks, lighter crowds, and good fishing. Winter is the prime bouldering window on the Tableland. Check current fire restrictions with the Inyo National Forest White Mountain Ranger Station before any trip that involves campfires.

Expect a working high-desert valley with full grocery, fuel, and propane services in Bishop, then a fast climb into Sierra terrain on either side. Cell coverage is generally usable in the valley and unreliable in the canyons. The Bishop Creek drainage is an active bear area, and Forest Service sites such as Bishop Park provide bear boxes that must be used for all food and scented items. Stocked creeks run right past many campsites in the canyon, with rainbow, brown, brook, and Alpers trout, which is convenient for anglers but means careful food storage at night. Temperature swings between day and night are large at every elevation, so pack layers even in summer. Watch posted fire restrictions during dry months, as the Inyo National Forest periodically limits campfires and stove use.
