Camping near Dover, Delaware
Dover sits in central Kent County on the Delmarva Peninsula, roughly halfway between the Delaware Bay and the state's Atlantic beaches. The city is the state capital and a practical RV base for exploring both the bay marshes to the east and the beach resorts to the south. Killens Pond State Park, the closest public campground, is about fifteen miles south of Dover in Felton and functions as the main state-run option in the area.
The surrounding camping mix leans private and family-oriented. G and R Recreation Campground and Holiday Park Campground serve travelers who want full hookups close to Dover's attractions, while Deep Branch Family Campground and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Delaware Beaches sit closer to the Rehoboth and Lewes coast for beach-focused trips.
Most sites in the region accommodate RVs with water and electric hookups, and the Killens Pond campground stays open year-round, which is useful for shoulder-season and off-season travel in the Mid-Atlantic.
Things to do around Dover
Killens Pond State Park anchors the outdoor options with a 66-acre millpond used for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and pedal boats, plus a seasonal water park with pools and slides. The park also has a nature center, disc golf, and marked trails through wooded terrain.
In Dover itself, families can visit the Air Mobility Command Museum at Dover Air Force Base, the historic Green and Old State House downtown, and the Delaware Agricultural Museum. Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, roughly 20 miles east, is a top stop for birding and driving the auto tour loop.
Day trips to Rehoboth Beach, Lewes, and Cape Henlopen State Park are reachable within about an hour, giving RV travelers based near Dover access to both beaches and inland parks.

Dover has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and cool winters moderated by the Delaware Bay. Peak camping season runs from late May through early September, when the Killens Pond water park is open and beach traffic to Rehoboth is at its highest. Weekends in July and August book out well in advance at state and private campgrounds alike.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel. April through mid-June brings mild days, wildflowers, and active birding at Bombay Hook, while September and October offer warm afternoons, cooler nights, and thinner crowds. Fall is also the peak period for Atlantic tropical systems, and coastal nor'easters can affect the region from late fall into early spring.
Winter camping is possible: Killens Pond State Park is open year-round, along with Cape Henlopen, Lums Pond, and Trap Pond, though the water park, boat rentals, and some seasonal amenities close outside the warm months.
How to book a campsite near Dover
Killens Pond State Park is reserved through the Delaware State Parks system on ReserveAmerica, either online around the clock or through the state call center. Reservations can be placed up to one year prior to the arrival date, and a primary occupant must be listed on the reservation and present valid ID at check-in. Campsite rates cover up to four people, with a small per-person charge for additional guests up to a maximum of eight.
Private campgrounds such as G and R Recreation Campground, Holiday Park Campground, Deep Branch Family Campground, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Delaware Beaches take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Book summer weekends and holidays several months out, especially for full-hookup sites and the Jellystone resort near the beaches.
Outside firewood is not permitted in Delaware State Park campgrounds due to invasive insect quarantines; firewood is sold on site.
What to expect on the ground
The terrain around Dover is flat coastal plain with pine and hardwood forest inland and salt marsh toward the bay. Sites at Killens Pond State Park sit on level dirt pads with water and electric hookups and fire rings, set in a wooded loop layout with 59 electric sites, walk-in tent sites, and cabins. Bathhouses with free hot showers are open year-round for registered campers. Private parks in the area typically offer full hookups, pools, playgrounds, and camp stores.
Mosquitoes, ticks, and biting flies are common from late spring through early fall, especially near marshes and ponds, so bring repellent and long sleeves for evenings.
Pets are allowed at Delaware State Park campgrounds when kept under control, but they are restricted from most cabins and from the Killens Pond water park.

weather.gov/phi/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Dover?
You're going to do great, Dover is genuinely one of the easiest places in the country to start your first RV trip. Central Delaware is flat, the roads are wide, traffic is light compared to nearby cities, and US Route 13 plus Route 1 give you straight, well-marked routes to every major campground and beach. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, water, and waste, so you're never left guessing. If you'd rather skip driving entirely your first time, choose a host who delivers. Pro tip: do a short practice loop on Route 8 west of Dover (gentle farmland roads) before heading to your first campground, you'll feel like a pro within 20 minutes.
deldot.gov/Programs/safety/index.shtmlWhat if my RV breaks down during my Dover trip?
You're covered, every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one call away whether you're stuck on Route 1 heading to Rehoboth or boondocking near Bombay Hook. The roadside team handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical issues, and your RVezy host is also reachable through the in-app messaging. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip, so you've got two layers of backup. Delaware is small (just under 100 miles top to bottom), which means most mechanical help is never far away. Pro tip: snap a photo of the roadside assistance number from your booking confirmation and save it to your phone before you leave the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Dover RV rental into other states or across the border?
Yes, most Dover hosts allow interstate travel, which is fantastic because Dover sits within easy reach of Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, and Washington D.C. Popular routes include Dover to Ocean City, MD (about 80 miles), Dover to Assateague Island (about 90 miles), Dover to Washington D.C. (about 90 miles), and Dover to the Pocono Mountains (about 175 miles). Travel to Canada may be allowed with advance host approval and the right protection coverage, just message the host first to confirm. Pro tip: the Cape May-Lewes Ferry (about 50 miles southeast of Dover) lets you take your RV across Delaware Bay to New Jersey, a scenic shortcut to the Jersey Shore.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Dover RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost on any Dover RV trip, but it's easy to plan for. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 10 mpg, Class A's around 6 to 8 mpg, campervans 14 to 18 mpg, and trucks pulling travel trailers around 10 to 12 mpg. Delaware gas prices tend to run slightly below the national average, and there's no sales tax on fuel purchases here, a nice bonus. For a 4-day trip with 300 miles of driving in a Class C, budget roughly $120 to $160 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at Wawa or Royal Farms along Route 13 in Dover before heading to coastal beach towns, prices near Rehoboth and Bethany run noticeably higher in summer.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Dover?
For the best sites at Delaware State Parks, book as early as possible through the official Delaware State Parks reservation portal, the booking window opens up to 11 months in advance. Summer weekends (Memorial Day through Labor Day) at Cape Henlopen, Lums Pond, Killens Pond, and Trap Pond often fill quickly after opening. For shoulder-season trips in May, September, or October, 2 to 4 weeks notice usually works well. Same-day reservations may be available for tent and RV sites when space exists. Pro tip: if your dream site is sold out, check back often, last-minute cancellations open up frequently, especially in the weeks before a trip.
destateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are local driving conditions like around Dover?
Driving conditions around Dover are about as RV-friendly as the East Coast gets. The terrain is flat, the major routes (US 13, Route 1, Route 8) are wide and well-maintained, and there are no mountain passes or tight switchbacks to worry about. The one thing to plan for: Route 1 southbound to Rehoboth and Bethany Beach gets congested on Friday afternoons and Sunday returns during summer, so aim to travel midweek or before 10 a.m. Watch for low overpasses in downtown Dover near the State Capitol and avoid the historic Green area in larger Class A rigs. Pro tip: use the SR-1 toll bypass instead of cutting through Dover proper, it's faster and more RV-friendly, just budget about $4 in tolls.
deldot.gov/index.shtmlWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Dover?
Campgrounds near Dover offer everything from basic to full resort-style hookups. Delaware State Parks like Lums Pond and Killens Pond have three-point full hookups (water, electric 30/50 amp, sewer) at many sites, plus modern bathhouses with hot showers, dump stations, picnic tables, and fire rings. Cape Henlopen and Trap Pond mix full-hookup and water/electric-only sites. Private parks like Tall Pines Camping Resort add pools, playgrounds, laundry, camp stores, and Wi-Fi. Potable water fills are available at every state park campground, and most have on-site dump stations included with your stay. Outside firewood is not permitted in Delaware State Parks (to stop spotted lanternfly), but firewood is sold on site. Pro tip: pack a 25-foot fresh water hose and a 30-to-50 amp electrical adapter for maximum site flexibility.

Expect a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on the rig, climate-controlled heating and AC, a dining/lounge area, and seatbelts for travel passengers. Many listings include TVs, outdoor speakers, awnings, leveling blocks, and onboard generators for off-grid power. Some hosts include Wi-Fi hotspots, linens, and kitchenware, while others offer them as add-ons. Class B campervans are perfect for couples, while Class C motorhomes and travel trailers are family RV trip favorites in Dover. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and message the host about generator-included hours if you plan to dry-camp at Bombay Hook or a beach overflow lot.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dover,%20DelawareWhat add-ons can I get with my Dover RV rental?

Common picks include linen and bedding packages, kitchen kits, camping chairs and tables, bikes, kayaks or paddleboards, generators, propane refills, and pet packages. Mileage policies vary, most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with overage fees on additional miles, and some offer unlimited mileage packages for road trippers. Pickup and drop-off times are set by each host, often between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a linens kit and you can arrive at your campsite with just a duffel bag.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dover,%20DelawareHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment for your RV rental in Dover, DE is handled securely through the RVezy platform, no cash and no awkward third-party app requests with your host. You'll pay your trip total (rental, protection, fees, taxes, and any add-ons) by credit or debit card when you book. A refundable security deposit is held separately by RVezy, with the amount depending on the rig and the protection tier you select. The hold is released after your trip ends, assuming there's no damage or policy violation (like exceeding mileage or smoking inside). To avoid issues, do a thorough walk-around video at pickup and drop-off and return the RV with gas, propane, and waste tanks at the levels your host specified. Pro tip: use a credit card with rental car or travel protection benefits for an extra layer of coverage.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Dover, DE?
Dover's location makes it a launchpad for some incredible RV road trips. Top picks include Cape Henlopen State Park and Lewes (about 50 miles, beaches and historic town), Rehoboth and Bethany Beaches (about 45 to 60 miles, boardwalk classics), Assateague Island National Seashore (about 90 miles, wild horses on the beach), Chincoteague NWR in Virginia (about 110 miles), Ocean City, MD (about 80 miles), Annapolis (about 75 miles), Philadelphia (about 80 miles), and Washington D.C. (about 90 miles). Within Delaware itself, don't miss Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge just northeast of Dover, the auto-tour loop is unreal during spring and fall bird migrations. Pro tip: a 7-night loop of Dover to Cape Henlopen to Assateague to Chincoteague and back is the ultimate Delmarva RV trip, and many RVezy hosts can accommodate that mileage.
