Highland Acres is a residential community just outside Dover in central Kent County, Delaware. The location puts RV travelers within a short drive of both the Delaware Bay coast and the Atlantic beach resorts, with agricultural back roads and small state parks in between. Interstate access via US-13 and Route 1 makes it a practical base for touring the state.
The closest full-service campground is Killens Pond State Park, centrally located in Kent County in Felton, roughly fifteen miles south of Dover and about forty-five miles from the Delaware Beaches. Private options nearby include G and R Recreation Campground and Holiday Park Campground, both catering to RV rigs with hookups. Families heading to the shore often stage at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Delaware Beaches or Deep Branch Family Campground on the way south.
Most sites in the region are wooded, flat, and easy to navigate for mid-size Class C rentals and travel trailers.

Central Delaware has a humid subtropical climate. Dover experiences hot summers and cold winters with strong seasonal contrast, rainfall is spread fairly evenly through the year with heavier summer downpours and thunderstorms, and winters bring regular snowfall. Summer is the busiest RV season, with peak crowds tied to beach traffic and school breaks.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for touring. Wildflowers, migrating shorebirds along the bay, and mild daytime temperatures make April through early June and September into October the shoulder-season sweet spots. Bug pressure rises in midsummer, especially near marshes and ponds.
Winter camping is possible at select state parks. Campgrounds at Cape Henlopen, Killens Pond, Lums Pond and Trap Pond State Park are open year-round, and the campground at Delaware Seashore State Park is also open year-round, though during the winter months it is open for self-contained units only.
How to book a site near Highland Acres
State park sites and private campgrounds use separate booking systems. Reservations for Killens Pond can be made online through the Delaware State Parks reservation system or by calling the park office, and online reservations are available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and may be placed by credit card only. Reservations may be made up to one year prior to arrival date. Weekends in July and August fill first, so book well ahead for prime summer dates.
Private parks such as G and R Recreation Campground, Holiday Park Campground, Deep Branch Family Campground, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Delaware Beaches take reservations directly through their own websites or phone lines. Holiday weekends at the Jellystone resort typically sell out earliest.
What to expect on arrival
State park check-in is straightforward but has firm rules. Delaware State Park campgrounds are family campgrounds, group camping is prohibited, and individuals are limited to two sites at any time. In the case of a late arrival 24 hours or more, campers should notify the park at 302-284-4526 or the reservation may be cancelled.
Expect wooded, level sites with fire rings. At Killens Pond, the campground offers shaded sites with level dirt pads, water and electric hookups, and fire rings, several loops with well-spaced sites and a primitive area, plus clean bathhouses with free hot showers and potable water stations throughout. Wood and ice are sold at the campground registration booth. Private parks in the area lean more toward full hookups and family amenities like pools and playgrounds.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Highland%20Acres%2C%20DelawareWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Highland Acres, Delaware?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Highland Acres. Delaware does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal motorhomes or travel trailers under standard weight limits, so your everyday license works for Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and most towables. You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home-country license. That's it, no DMV trips, no extra paperwork, just pack and go.
dmv.de.gov/services/driver_services/drivers_license/dr_lic_aplynew.shtmlIs my RV rental in Highland Acres protected if something goes wrong?
Every RV rental in Highland Acres booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip, and that coverage helps protect you against most accidental physical damage to the RV so you can head toward the Delaware beaches with confidence. Hosts do not pick your coverage, you do, which keeps you in control of your trip. For a first-time RV rental or a larger fifth wheel, a higher tier adds extra peace of mind. Full coverage details are available on the RVezy insurance and protection page.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat happens if I need to cancel my Highland Acres RV trip?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy applies a standard cancellation policy to every reservation, including a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date. Cancellation terms are set and handled by RVezy directly, not by individual hosts, so you get a consistent experience whether you rent a campervan or a Class A motorhome in Highland Acres. If a host cancels, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit. Review the full policy in the RVezy Help Center before booking your Delaware getaway.

Yes, plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rentals in Highland Acres, so your pup can ride shotgun on the whole adventure. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly narrow the list, then message the host about any breed or size notes. Once you're rolling, leashed dogs are welcome at Delaware State Park campgrounds including Killens Pond just 15 minutes south, and Cape Henlopen offers a dedicated off-leash dog beach north of the swimming area (outside lifeguarded sections in season). Trap Pond and Lums Pond also allow leashed pets on trails. Pack a tie-out, a collapsible water bowl, and proof of rabies vaccination just in case a ranger asks.
destateparks.com/pets-in-parks/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Highland Acres?
Yes, RV delivery in Highland Acres is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow the trailer or drive the motorhome directly to your campground, set up the slides and awning, level it, and walk you through the systems so you can focus on relaxing. Common drop-off spots include Killens Pond State Park (about 8 miles south), Cape Henlopen (about 50 miles east), and Lums Pond (about 60 miles north). Just use the Delivery filter when searching, then confirm the fee and distance with the host before booking. Easiest RV trip you'll ever take.

You have plenty of range to explore. Hosts in Highland Acres set their own mileage policies, and many include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer road trips. For perspective: Rehoboth Beach is roughly 40 miles east, Assateague Island National Seashore sits about 80 miles south, Philadelphia is around 80 miles north, and Washington, D.C. is about 95 miles west. The mileage allowance and any per-mile overage fee are shown directly on each listing. Pro tip: estimate your full route before booking and filter for unlimited mileage if you are planning a multi-state Mid-Atlantic loop.

destateparks.com/rv-camping/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Highland Acres?
Late April through mid-June and September through October are the sweet spot for an RV trip from Highland Acres. Spring brings 60 to 75 degree days with blooming dogwoods around Killens Pond, and crowds are light. Summer (July to August) heats up to 85 to 90 degrees with high humidity and is peak beach season, expect Rehoboth and Cape Henlopen to book solid months ahead. Fall delivers crisp 55 to 70 degree afternoons, fewer mosquitos, and gorgeous color in the loblolly pines around Trap Pond. Winter camping is genuinely doable here too: Delaware Seashore stays open year-round for self-contained units, and many hosts list heated RVs for off-season birders chasing snow geese at Bombay Hook.
weather.gov/phi/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, especially around Highland Acres. Central Delaware is one of the easiest places in the country to learn, with flat terrain, wide rural roads, and gentle traffic outside of Dover's Route 1 corridor. Every RVezy host gives you a full pickup orientation: how to operate the slides, hookups, propane, generator, leveling, and dump valves, plus their personal phone number for questions on the road. Choose a smaller Class C motorhome or a 20 to 24 foot travel trailer for your first trip if you're nervous. Stick to backroads like Route 9 along the Delaware Bay for practice, and avoid the Route 1 Bay Bridge during summer Saturday beach traffic. Confidence builds fast.
deldot.gov/information/travelers/index.shtmlWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my Highland Acres trip?
You are covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat on Route 13, a dead battery at Killens Pond, or need a tow near the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, one phone call gets help dispatched. You can also message your host directly, since many local owners know which mobile RV techs and mechanics serve Dover, Smyrna, and Milford. Delaware's compact geography means help is rarely far away in Kent County. Save the RVezy support number and your host's number to your phone before pickup, and screenshot your listing for quick reference on the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008794-What-is-included-with-roadside-assistanceCan I take my Highland Acres RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcomed and one of the joys of an RV road trip from Highland Acres. Delaware sits at the heart of the Mid-Atlantic, so you can easily roll into Maryland (Assateague, Ocean City), Pennsylvania (Lancaster Amish Country, Gettysburg), New Jersey (Cape May via the Lewes ferry), Virginia (Shenandoah), and up to New York within a day's drive. Cross-border travel into Canada must be approved by your host in advance, since coverage and host preferences vary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage does not extend south of the border. Confirm your route with your host before booking and you are set.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Delaware RV trip?
Fuel is easier to budget than you'd think for an RV rental Delaware trip. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A coaches run 6 to 10 mpg. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Delaware gas prices typically sit slightly below the national average and notably cheaper than neighboring New Jersey or Pennsylvania, so top off before crossing the Delaware Memorial Bridge. A 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C might cost $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: Wawa stations along Route 13 in Dover and Camden have RV-friendly pumps with high canopies, and many offer diesel.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Highland Acres?
Book early and you'll get the best sites. Delaware State Parks open campground reservations up to one year in advance through the ReserveAmerica portal, and prime summer weekends at Cape Henlopen and Delaware Seashore (Indian River Inlet) often sell out within hours of opening. For Killens Pond just south of Highland Acres, aim to book 2 to 4 months ahead for summer and 2 to 3 weeks ahead for spring or fall. Same-day reservations are accepted for tent and RV sites when availability allows. Pro tip: if your dates are full, set a Campnab alert for cancellations, they happen often, and a riverside loblolly site can pop up days before your trip.
destateparks.com/reservation-information/What are driving conditions like around Highland Acres?
Driving conditions around Highland Acres are about as RV-friendly as it gets. Kent County is flat farmland with wide shoulders, low traffic, and almost no mountain grades or tight switchbacks. The main artery is Route 1, a divided toll highway that connects you smoothly to the beaches (cash and E-ZPass accepted). Watch for two things: summer Saturday beach traffic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. heading east on Route 1, and Amish horse-and-buggy traffic on Route 9 and rural Kent County roads. Coastal wind can push high-profile RVs near the Indian River Inlet Bridge, so grip the wheel firmly. Otherwise, cruise control and a podcast is the vibe.
deldot.gov/information/travelers/index.shtmlWhat amenities do campgrounds near Highland Acres offer, and where can I dump or fill water?
You'll find solid infrastructure for RV camping in Highland Acres. Killens Pond, Lums Pond, Trap Pond, Cape Henlopen, and Delaware Seashore all offer water and electric hookups, with full hookups (including sewer) available at Delaware Seashore's Indian River Inlet sites and select Lums Pond loops. Each park has a dump station and potable water fill open to registered campers, and bathhouses with hot showers are standard. Note that outside firewood is not permitted in Delaware State Parks due to spotted lanternfly quarantines, but firewood is sold onsite. Cell signal is generally strong across Kent County. Pro tip: top off fresh water before leaving the park because rural fill stations are spread out south of Dover.
destateparks.com/rv-camping/What's typically included inside a motorhome rental in Highland Acres?
Expect a fully equipped home on wheels. A typical motorhome rental in Highland Acres comes with sleeping for 4 to 8 people, a full kitchen (fridge, stovetop, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control (roof AC and propane furnace), seatbelted travel seats, and a dinette that converts to extra sleeping space. Many listings add a generator, outdoor awning, flat-screen TV, and even Wi-Fi hotspots or Starlink. Travel trailers and fifth wheels include the same essentials minus the cab. Each RVezy listing shows a complete amenity checklist, plus photos of every space. Message the host before booking if you need something specific like a CPAP-friendly outlet or a kid-safe bunk setup.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options do hosts offer in Highland Acres?
You can customize your campervan rental Highland Acres experience with all kinds of add-ons. Hosts commonly offer linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs and tables, portable grills, generators, bike racks, and even kayaks or paddleboards, perfect for Killens Pond. Many also rent portable propane fire pits since outside firewood is restricted in Delaware State Parks. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near Highland Acres or Dover, but delivery to your campground (Killens Pond is just 8 miles away) is often available for a flat fee plus mileage. Mileage allowances and pet fees are listed transparently on each listing. Pick what you need, skip what you don't.
destateparks.com/park/killens-pond/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay your full booking through RVezy at checkout using a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which protects both sides. A separate refundable security deposit is held by RVezy (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV's value) and released after your trip ends, assuming no damage or extra cleaning is needed. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkaround video with your host at pickup and drop-off, return the RV with tanks emptied and fuel refilled per the agreement, and keep all communication on the RVezy platform so there is a written record.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Highland Acres?
Central Delaware is a perfect launchpad. Top picks for an RV road trip from Highland Acres include Rehoboth Beach and Cape Henlopen State Park (about 40 miles east, around 1 hour) for boardwalk fun and oceanfront camping; Assateague Island National Seashore in Maryland (about 80 miles south, 1.5 to 2 hours) where wild ponies roam the dunes; Chincoteague, Virginia (about 95 miles south, around 2 hours) for more wild ponies and Atlantic Flyway birding; Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (about 80 miles north, around 1.75 hours) for Amish country and family farms; and Washington, D.C. (about 95 miles west, around 2 hours) with several RV parks in nearby Maryland. Insider tip: take the Cape May to Lewes Ferry for a scenic shortcut into New Jersey.
