Camping near Middletown, Delaware
Middletown sits in southern New Castle County, Delaware, roughly 25 miles south of Wilmington and within a short drive of the upper Chesapeake Bay, the C&D Canal, and the Maryland Eastern Shore. The town works well as an RV base because most of the region's public campgrounds and private RV parks are within about an hour by road, on both the Delaware and Maryland sides of the state line.
Options range from full-hookup private resorts to state-managed public land. Elk Neck State Park sits on a peninsula surrounded by the Chesapeake Bay and the Elk River, and offers 6 miles of trails, a boat launch, an unguarded swimming area, a Nature Center, and over 250 campsites plus mini cabins and rustic cabins. Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area covers 5,656 acres in Cecil County, bordered by Pennsylvania to the north and less than a half mile west of Delaware, and is known for its fields, woodlands and natural beauty.
On the water side, Duck Neck Campground and Woodlands Camping Resort round out the private options, while Camp Country Center offers another nearby choice for families with rigs of most sizes.
Things to do near Middletown
Water access shapes most trips out of Middletown. Duck Neck Campground is a family-oriented park with 356 full hook-up RV sites and a marina on Maryland's eastern shore, located on the Chester River, well positioned for fishing, crabbing, and boating. At Elk Neck, visitors hike to the Turkey Point Lighthouse, canoe, kayak, fish, swim, hunt, and picnic.
Inland, Fair Hill is the region's trail hub. The area offers over 80 miles of scenic trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, with routes ranging from woodland paths to open fields, and anglers can fish Big Elk Creek, a stocked put-and-take trout stream that runs the length of the property.
Middletown itself is close to Lums Pond State Park, the C&D Canal Trail, and historic New Castle for day trips that don't require moving the rig.

The camping calendar in the Middletown area is driven by mid-Atlantic weather and by park operating windows. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons, with mild days, cool nights, and lower bug pressure. Summer brings warm, humid weather, afternoon thunderstorms, and peak demand at both public and private campgrounds. Winter is cold and wet, with occasional snow and reduced services at many parks.
Operating seasons vary by property. All Elk Neck State Park campsites are reservable mid-April to mid-October, off-season camping is first-come first-served, and the park itself is open year round. Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area is accessible year-round, with reservations available for its primitive youth group areas and equestrian sites.
Private resorts tend to run a longer shoulder season than the state parks but still see the busiest weekends around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day. Booking eight to twelve weeks ahead is normal for waterfront and full-hookup sites in June, July, and August.

How to book campgrounds near Middletown
Public and private campgrounds in the area use different systems, so plan reservations by property. For Maryland state parks including Elk Neck, reservations are handled through the state reservation center at 1-888-432-2267, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., or online at parkreservations.maryland.gov, and bookings can be made for today and up to 365 days in advance.
Fair Hill is different. For information or to make a reservation for the youth group camping areas, call 410-398-1246, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and equestrian camping is handled by request through the park office.
Private campgrounds such as Woodlands Camping Resort, Duck Neck Campground, and Camp Country Center book directly through their own websites or by phone. Holiday weekends fill first, so lock in dates before finalizing the RV rental.
What to expect at area campgrounds
Site quality varies widely. State park loops at Elk Neck are wooded and quiet, with a mix of full-hookup, electric-only, and non-electric sites. Full hookups including electric, water and sewage are available at sites 1 through 31, and the campground is divided into loops including Elk, Choptank, Miles, and Wye, with Wye being tent-only.
Private resorts on the Eastern Shore lean heavily seasonal. Duck Neck is primarily composed of seasonal campers and sites, with a limited number of transient sites, so waterfront transient spots go quickly.
Cell coverage is inconsistent in wooded and waterfront campgrounds around the upper Bay, and shade is common but not universal. Bring leveling blocks, a mosquito plan for summer stays, and a backup navigation option for the last few miles into any of these parks.

Expect to pay roughly $90 to $175 per night for travel trailers and campervans, while larger Class A and Class C motorhomes typically run $200 to $350 per night, plus a host-set mileage rate. For a cheap RV rental Middletown families love, filter for travel trailers under 25 feet and look for hosts offering free local delivery to save on fuel from the start.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Middletown%2C%20DelawareDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Middletown?
Good news: a regular Delaware (or any U.S. or Canadian) driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Middletown, with no Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or RV endorsement required. You will need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from overseas? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home-country license and you are set. Most first-time guests are surprised at how straightforward the process is, which means you can spend less time on logistics and more time planning stops along Route 1 toward the Delaware beaches.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental protected if something goes wrong on the trip?
Yes, every RV rental in Middletown booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance built right into your reservation. During checkout you choose from multiple protection tiers, so you can pick the level of coverage that matches your comfort. The protection plan covers eligible damage to the vehicle, giving renters meaningful peace of mind. Combined with the host's pickup walkthrough, you can roll out of Middletown knowing that flat tires, dead batteries, and lockouts are just a quick phone call away, even at 2 a.m. on a Route 13 rest stop.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my plans change?
Booking is genuinely low-risk: RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy on every reservation, and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far out you cancel and circumstances like severe weather or natural disasters, which can be relevant for a Middletown RV trip during late-summer storm season. Cancellation rules are platform-wide, so you will not see different terms on each listing. Pro tip: book early to grab the best Lums Pond State Park dates, then revisit your plan during the grace window if anything changes.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Middletown RV trip?
Absolutely. Pet-friendly RV rental Middletown hosts are easy to find: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see plenty of listings that welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Once you arrive, Lums Pond State Park in nearby Bear allows leashed pets at campsites and has miles of dog-friendly trails around the pond, and Trap Pond State Park is another favorite for paddling with your pup. Some hosts charge a small pet fee or require a quick cleaning at the end, both visible on the listing. Bring a tie-out, collapsible water bowl, and a copy of vaccination records, and your dog will love the Delaware countryside as much as you do.
destateparks.com/PetsCan the RV be delivered to my campsite instead of me picking it up?
Yes, RV delivery in Middletown is one of the most popular ways to start a trip, especially if you are new to towing. Many local hosts will deliver the RV directly to Lums Pond State Park, Killens Pond State Park, or even your driveway, then level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees typically range from $2 to $4 per mile from the host's home base, with some offering free delivery within a set radius. This is one of the best ways to enjoy a stress-free first time renting an RV: you simply show up with your groceries and gear.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037837094-Delivery-optionsHow does mileage work and how far can I realistically drive?
Most Middletown hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and quite a few offer RV rental with unlimited mileage on longer bookings, just filter for it on RVezy. From Middletown you are well positioned for short hops: Rehoboth Beach is about 65 miles south, Assateague Island National Seashore is roughly 100 miles, Cape May (via the Cape May-Lewes Ferry) is around 70 miles away, and Philadelphia is about 45 miles north. If you are planning a bigger RV road trip from Middletown, like a Shenandoah loop or a Finger Lakes run, message the host before booking and ask about a flat-rate mileage package. They will usually quote you a deal.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Middletown%2C%20DelawareWhere are the best campgrounds near Middletown, DE?
You are spoiled for choice. The closest and most popular is Lums Pond State Park in Bear (about 10 miles north), with full-hookup sites, a 200-acre pond, and the Swamp Forest Trail right outside your door. Killens Pond State Park near Felton (about 35 miles south) offers full hookups plus a waterpark, perfect for a family RV trip from Middletown. Trap Pond State Park near Laurel features bald cypress trees and kayak rentals. Just over the line in Maryland, Elk Neck State Park (about 30 miles) sits on a Chesapeake Bay peninsula with a lighthouse. Book Delaware State Parks via their official reservation system up to 11 months ahead for the best selection.
destateparks.com/Camping/ReservationsWhen is the best time of year to take an RV trip from Middletown?
Middletown sits in a humid subtropical zone with four real seasons, and the sweet spot for RV camping is mid-April through mid-June and again from early September through late October. During those windows, daytime highs hover between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, humidity drops, mosquitoes ease up, and the beach traffic on Route 1 thins out. July and August are warm but humid (highs around 85 to 90 degrees), so plan for shade and air conditioning at your site. Fall foliage along the C and D Canal Trail in mid-October is a local favorite, with cool nights perfect for campfires and clear skies for stargazing.
weather.gov/phi/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You will do great, and Middletown is one of the friendlier places in the Mid-Atlantic to learn. Every host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering the propane, water systems, slide-outs, and dash controls, and most encourage a short test drive around their neighborhood before you head out. The roads around Middletown are flat, well maintained, and easy to navigate, and Route 301 and Route 13 offer wide lanes with plenty of pull-offs. For your first time renting an RV, start with a travel trailer under 25 feet or a Class C, skip rush hour on the Delaware Memorial Bridge, and remember your host is just a text away throughout the trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736634-First-time-renter-tipsWhat happens if I have a breakdown or problem on the road?
You are never on your own. Every RV rental in Middletown booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering tows, flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and fuel delivery. One phone call dispatches a local service provider, whether you are parked at Lums Pond, broken down on I-95 near Wilmington, or stuck at a fuel stop in Smyrna. Your host is also a direct text away for quick questions about the awning, generator, or water pump. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so you have it handy if you ever need to call for help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take the RV out of state, like to Maryland, New Jersey, or Virginia?
Yes, interstate travel is welcomed on RVezy rentals, and from Middletown you are within easy reach of several states in a single tank. Popular routes include heading north to Pennsylvania Dutch Country in Lancaster (about 60 miles), east across the Delaware Memorial Bridge toward Cape May, New Jersey (about 70 miles), south through Maryland's Eastern Shore to Assateague Island, or west toward Shenandoah National Park in Virginia (around 175 miles). Travel into Canada may be allowed but requires advance host approval and confirmation of cross-border coverage. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Message your host before booking to confirm your planned route.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Middletown RV trip?
Fuel is easier to budget than most people expect. Delaware gas prices typically run a few cents below the national average thanks to relatively low state fuel taxes, and you will find Wawa, Royal Farms, and Sheetz stations along Route 13 and Route 1 with diesel and wide pull-through lanes. A Class B campervan averages about 18 to 22 MPG, a Class C motorhome runs 8 to 12 MPG, and a Class A typically gets 6 to 10 MPG. For a 3-day Middletown RV trip with 300 miles of driving in a Class C, budget around $120 to $180 for fuel. Fill up the night before pickup to make returning the RV quick and easy.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Middletown?
Book early and you will rarely have a problem. Delaware State Parks (including Lums Pond and Killens Pond) open reservations up to 11 months in advance through the official destateparks.com reservation system, and prime summer weekends can fill within days of release. For private parks in the area, 2 to 3 months ahead is usually plenty outside of holiday weekends. Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day at Lums Pond often sell out six months out. Insider tip: weekday arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) are dramatically easier to snag and often a few dollars cheaper per night.
destateparks.com/Camping/ReservationsWhat are the local driving conditions like around Middletown?
Driving conditions around Middletown are genuinely RV-friendly: the terrain is flat, the highways are wide, and there are no mountain passes or steep grades to worry about. Route 301 (a tolled freeway between Middletown and the Maryland line) and Route 1 are the main RV arteries, both built for heavy traffic. Plan around two real chokepoints: Friday afternoon beach traffic heading south on Route 1 toward Rehoboth, and rush hour near the Delaware Memorial Bridge on I-95. Watch for occasional summer thunderstorms and the rare winter ice event between December and February. The historic downtown on Main Street has low-hanging tree branches, so stick to the bypass with anything over 11 feet tall.
deldot.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Middletown?
You will find more comfort than you might expect close to home. Lums Pond State Park offers 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer at most sites, hot showers, a modern laundry room, and a dump station near the entrance. Killens Pond and Trap Pond State Parks include hookups, potable water fill stations, and dump stations free to registered campers. Private parks in the area add pools, Wi-Fi, propane refills, and on-site stores. If you are boondocking or staying somewhere without sewer, the closest public dump stations are at Lums Pond and at Cabela's in Christiana (about 15 miles north). Fill your fresh tank before leaving and you will be set.
destateparks.com/CampingWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Middletown?
Modern comfort, basically. A typical motorhome rental Middletown listing sleeps 4 to 8 people and comes fully equipped with a queen or king bed, a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, microwave, propane stove, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning, propane furnace, dinette, and a TV. Many include a generator, awning, and outdoor camp chairs, and lots of hosts add starter kits with linens, towels, pots, pans, and coffee gear. Wi-Fi via hotspot is a common add-on. Every motorhome has seatbelts for designated travel passengers, which is the legal way to travel with kids in Delaware. Check the listing's amenity list to see exactly what is stocked.
dmv.de.gov/What add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in Middletown offer a friendly menu of add-ons that can transform your trip. Common extras include linen and kitchen kits ($30 to $75), portable generators ($20 to $40 per day), bike racks, kayak racks, camping chairs, propane fire pits, and Starlink or hotspot Wi-Fi. Many hosts also offer paid dump-and-fill service so you can return the RV without stopping at a station. Pickup is usually flexible between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., with drop-off by 11 a.m., and delivery to Lums Pond or your driveway is widely available. Mileage policies range from 100 free miles per night to unlimited on weekly bookings. Use Instant Book on RVezy if you want to lock in plans tonight.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Middletown%2C%20DelawareHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and fully handled through RVezy, with no cash or checks at pickup. You pay your trip total by credit or debit card when you book, and the funds are processed securely. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape, usually within a few business days. To avoid any deposit hiccups, do a thorough walk-around with your host at pickup and return, take date-stamped photos, empty the tanks if your agreement requires it, and refill propane and fuel to the level noted in the listing.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV from Middletown in the winter?
Yes, winter RV rentals are available in Middletown, and they are a quietly magical way to experience the area. While January lows average around 27 degrees Fahrenheit, plenty of local hosts list four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable propane furnaces. Just filter by amenities on RVezy or ask the host directly. Lums Pond State Park stays open year-round with electric hookups (water spigots are winterized from December to mid-March, so fill your fresh tank before arrival). Bring extra propane, a heated water hose if you will have a hookup, and warm bedding. A winter trip to the snow-dusted C and D Canal Trail or a holiday-lights tour through Longwood Gardens (about 30 minutes north) is a local insider treasure.
