Campgrounds and RV parks near Townsend, DE

The Chesapeake Bay shoreline and its tributaries are the region's main draw. Elk Neck State Park is a popular base for fishing, boating, and hiking on the peninsula, with beach access on the bay and a lighthouse at Turkey Point. Inland, Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area is one of the largest trail networks in the mid-Atlantic. The management area offers an extensive 80-mile trail system ideal for hiking, biking, and nature exploration, along with a disabled-accessible fishing pier on Big Elk Creek. Fair Hill also hosts the Maryland 5 Star equestrian event each October. Closer to the campgrounds, Woodlands adds on-site recreation. The resort features a large swimming pool, fishing pond, basketball and volleyball courts, playground, and covered pavilion. Historic New Castle, Dover, and the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal are all reachable as day trips.

The Townsend area has four distinct seasons typical of the mid-Atlantic. Under the Köppen classification Townsend features a humid subtropical climate, with moderating effects from nearby water bodies that ease temperature extremes, though winters are cold and summers hot with year-round precipitation. Peak RV season runs from late spring through early fall, with weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day booking out earliest. Spring and fall bring the most comfortable trail and paddling conditions. The ideal time to visit Fair Hill is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural scenery is at its peak. Summer months can be busy, especially during the Maryland 5 Star event in October. Winters are less crowded but can be quite cold. Many private parks operate on a seasonal schedule. At Woodlands the seasonal season runs from April 1st to October 31st, with events scheduled throughout that period. The area is also exposed to nor'easters in winter and spring, tropical systems in late summer and fall, and severe thunderstorms in warmer months.

Site setups run from basic to full-service depending on the property. At Woodlands, RV travelers can expect standard hookups and wooded sites. The resort offers 50 and 30 amp electric, large wooded sites, picnic tables and fire rings, a 24-hour bathhouse, and propane filling on site. Sites include water, sewer, and access to dump stations. Cell reception can be inconsistent in the wooded terrain, so travelers relying on data should confirm coverage with their carrier. Fair Hill is far more rustic. The property features 10 equestrian camping pads with electrical and water hookups, plus primitive camping areas for youth groups. Expect wooded, close-set sites at Woodlands and open, field-style layouts at the equestrian pads. Bring leveling blocks, as pads can be uneven.
