Campgrounds near Hancock, Maryland
Hancock sits at Maryland's narrowest point, wedged between the Potomac River and the Pennsylvania border in Washington County. The town is a practical base for RV travelers exploring the C&O Canal, the Western Maryland Rail Trail, and the surrounding Appalachian ridges. Interstate 70 and Interstate 68 meet just outside town, making arrival straightforward from Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Washington, D.C.
Campground options range from full-hookup private parks to primitive national park sites. Happy Hills Campground is a family-owned park a few miles west of town with a mix of RV sites and cabins. Fort Frederick State Park offers sites within a 585-acre park next to a restored 18th-century stone fort, and McCoys Ferry Campground - Chesapeake Ohio Canal National Park sits directly on the Potomac at towpath Mile 110.4.
Additional nearby choices include Breezewood Proving Grounds to the north across the Pennsylvania line and Saunderosa Park Inc for travelers looking for a smaller private setting. Together these options cover the range from hookup-equipped RV parks to rustic drive-in national park sites.
Things to do near Hancock
The C&O Canal towpath and the paved Western Maryland Rail Trail both pass directly through Hancock, giving cyclists flat, low-traffic riding for dozens of miles. The Western Maryland Rail Trail runs roughly 28 miles between Big Pool and Little Orleans, well suited to families and e-bikes. Kayakers and anglers use the Potomac River access points at McCoys Ferry and Fort Frederick.
Fort Frederick was constructed during the French and Indian War and later saw use during the American Revolution and the Civil War; the stone-walled fort and its two barracks are open to the public. Rangers run living-history programming on summer weekends. Sideling Hill's roadcut exhibit, Berkeley Springs State Park across the West Virginia line, and the shops and diners along Hancock's Main Street round out an easy day off the trail.

Peak season runs from late spring through mid-fall. Tent camping at Fort Frederick State Park is available from the first Saturday in May to the first Sunday in November, while self-contained camping units may camp year-round. The Fort Frederick campground is also closed during the Market Fair in April. Reservations for summer weekends should be booked well in advance.
Spring brings cool nights, wildflowers, and rising rainfall through May, so a rain plan matters. Summer is warm and humid with afternoon thunderstorms common along the ridges. Fall delivers reliable foliage from mid-October through early November and is arguably the best window for cycling the towpath.
Winter camping is possible for self-contained rigs, but expect closed water systems and limited services. The seasonal hand pump at McCoys Ferry operates April 15 through November 1, so campers should bring water outside those dates. Snow and ice can affect access roads from January through early March.
How to book campgrounds near Hancock
Reservation systems vary by operator. Reservations are required at McCoys Ferry and the other drive-in campgrounds in the C&O Canal National Historical Park; sites can be booked up to six months in advance online at Recreation.gov or by calling (877) 444-6777, and a credit or debit card is required.
Most campsites at Fort Frederick State Park can be reserved from May through October via the Maryland Department of Natural Resources reservation portal at parkreservations.maryland.gov or by calling 1-888-432-CAMP. Private parks such as Happy Hills Campground, Breezewood Proving Grounds, and Saunderosa Park Inc are booked directly through the campground by phone or their own websites. For summer holiday weekends, plan on booking two to three months out at minimum.
What to expect on-site
Amenities vary widely between private and public campgrounds. Happy Hills is family-owned with tent sites and full hookup sites and offers a social, family-focused atmosphere with organized activities in summer.
Public campgrounds are more rustic. McCoys Ferry has 12 single drive-in campsites, each with a picnic table, fire ring and grill; protected pit toilets and accessible portable toilets are available, and a potable hand pump operates April 15 through November 1. Sites accommodate a very small fifth wheel, travel trailer, RV, or pop-out with a 20-foot maximum, and tunnel access limits vehicle height to 10 feet 3 inches.
Fort Frederick offers 29 campsites with stone dust pads, picnic tables, fire rings, and lantern posts; a comfort station with flush toilets and rinse-off stations sits near the fort's parking lot, and potable water and a dumpster are located roughly 0.6 miles from the campground. Cell service is spotty at the more rural sites, so download maps in advance.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hancock,%20MarylandWhere are the best campgrounds near Hancock, MD?

Top picks include: Happy Hills Campground, just minutes from town with full hookups and a swimming pool; Fort Frederick State Park (about 15 minutes east), with riverside sites and a historic 1756 stone fort; Little Tonoloway Recreation Area, a walk-in C&O Canal site right in Hancock; Fifteenmile Creek Campground at Little Orleans (hookup-free and scenic); and Rocky Gap State Park (about 30 miles west), with electric sites and a sandy lake beach. parkreservations.maryland.gov/When is the best time to visit Hancock in an RV?
Hancock's sweet spots are late April through mid-June and mid-September through late October, when temperatures sit comfortably in the 60s and 70s°F and the Potomac River valley shows off either wildflowers or jaw-dropping fall foliage along Sideling Hill. Summer (July-August) is warm and humid with highs in the mid-80s°F, great for swimming but expect afternoon thunderstorms. Winters dip to 25-40°F with occasional snow, so most casual renters stick to spring through fall. Insider tip: time your trip for early October to ride the Western Maryland Rail Trail under brilliant red and gold maples; it's one of the most photographed stretches of trail in Maryland.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Hancock?
You've got this. Hancock is one of the friendlier places for a first time renting an RV: traffic is light, the main roads are well-maintained, and most state and federal campgrounds in the area have generous pull-through sites. Your host will give you a hands-on orientation at pickup, covering driving, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, and dumping tanks; nothing is left to guess. You can also message the host anytime during your trip, and RVezy support is available if you need it. Tip: choose a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for your first Hancock RV trip; they handle much like a large van and park easily in town.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I break down during my Hancock RV trip?
Don't sweat it: 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy renter protection plan for your Hancock RV rental. Whether you have a flat tire on US-522, a dead battery at Fort Frederick State Park, or a mechanical hiccup on I-68 over Sideling Hill, one phone call gets help dispatched to your location. Your host is also typically just a text away for quick fixes (like resetting a generator or finding the propane valve). Hancock has gas stations, a Sheetz, and basic auto services right off I-70, so help is rarely far. Travel relaxed, knowing the safety net follows you everywhere.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Hancock RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, and Hancock is perfectly placed for it: Pennsylvania is just north, West Virginia is across the Potomac, and Virginia is about 30 minutes south. Most hosts allow multi-state travel within the continental U.S., so a campervan rental Hancock to Gettysburg, Harpers Ferry, or Shenandoah is no problem. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance coverage, so message the host directly before booking if Canada is on your itinerary. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because coverage doesn't extend there. Confirm your route in the listing details, and you're set for a multi-state adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for?
Plan smart and your fuel budget stays reasonable. Class B campervans get roughly 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8-12 MPG, Class A coaches 6-10 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (often 10-14 MPG combined). Regular unleaded in Hancock is typically competitive thanks to the Sheetz and other stations right off I-70. For a 200-mile loop through Deep Creek Lake or toward Shenandoah, budget roughly $60 to $100 in fuel for a Class C. Tip: fill up in Hancock before heading west; prices often climb once you're past Cumberland in the Allegheny Mountains.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Hancock?
Earlier is better, but you have options. Maryland State Parks (Fort Frederick, Rocky Gap) take reservations up to a year in advance through the Maryland State Parks reservation system, and summer weekends fill quickly. C&O Canal NHP campsites at Little Tonoloway and Fifteenmile Creek are first-come, first-served and free, which is a fantastic perk. Private parks like Happy Hills typically book 2-4 months ahead for peak weekends. Off-season midweek? You can often find a spot the day-of. Tip: if Fort Frederick is full, check Rocky Gap or grab a free walk-in C&O site right in Hancock to save the day.
parkreservations.maryland.gov/What are the driving conditions like around Hancock?
Driving around Hancock is mostly easy, with a couple of fun mountain moments. I-70 and I-68 are wide, well-graded interstates; Sideling Hill (just west of town on I-68) is a famous geological cut where you'll climb to about 1,600 feet, no problem for modern RVs but downshift on the descent. US-522 north into Pennsylvania is curvy and scenic. Hancock itself is small (about 1,500 residents), so in-town driving is stress-free, with easy parking near the Western Maryland Rail Trail trailhead. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, especially along Woodmont Road. Winter occasionally brings snow and ice on the mountain grades, so check forecasts December through February before heading out.
chart.maryland.gov/What campground amenities can I expect near Hancock?
You'll find a great mix. Happy Hills Campground offers full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, a pool, and a dump station. Fort Frederick State Park has electric sites, potable water, restrooms with showers, and a dump station. C&O Canal sites like Little Tonoloway and Fifteenmile Creek are primitive (pit toilets, hand-pump water, no hookups) but free and right on the Potomac. Rocky Gap State Park, about 30 minutes west, has electric sites, hot showers, and a swim beach. Where to park an RV in Hancock for a quick overnight? Ask local businesses such as Sheetz, which may allow it with permission. Tip: fill fresh water at Happy Hills or Fort Frederick before heading to a primitive C&O site.
nps.gov/choh/planyourvisit/camping.htmWhat's typically included inside a Hancock RV rental?
Plenty to make you feel right at home. Most motorhome rental Hancock listings come with a queen bed (often a king in Class A), bunk or convertible dinette beds for kids, a full kitchen with fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, plus a bathroom with toilet and shower. Many include a rooftop air conditioner, furnace, TV, and an onboard generator (handy for boondocking near the C&O Canal). Travel trailers usually sleep 4-8, Class Cs sleep 5-7, and Class As can sleep 6-10. Seatbelts are provided for travel passengers. Wi-Fi is sometimes included via a mobile hotspot; otherwise cell service is solid in town and patchy west toward Little Orleans. Check each listing's amenities list to match your must-haves.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hancock,%20MarylandWhat add-ons and pickup options do Hancock hosts typically offer?
Hancock hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Common add-ons (with typical fees) include bedding and linen packages ($25-$75), kitchen kits ($25-$50), camp chairs and outdoor rugs ($15-$40), bikes for the Western Maryland Rail Trail ($25-$50/day), portable generators ($15-$25/day if not built-in), and propane top-ups. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Hancock, but many offer delivery (sometimes free within a set radius). Mileage policies vary: expect 100-150 free miles per night, with overage often around $0.25-$0.45/mile, and some listings advertise unlimited mileage. Tip: bundle bedding, kitchen kit, and bikes at booking; you'll roll straight from pickup to the rail trail.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hancock,%20MarylandHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at booking with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. That covers the nightly rate, fees, protection plan, and any add-ons you've selected. A refundable security deposit (amount set per listing) is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, separate from your booking payment, and is only charged if there's an issue like damage, excess mileage, or a late return. Assuming you bring the RV back in the condition you received it, the hold is released after your trip ends. Tip: do a quick walkaround video with your host at pickup and dropoff to keep your deposit refund smooth and stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a must-do local experience for a family RV trip in Hancock?
Don't miss the Hancock bike loop: park your family RV trip Hancock base at Little Tonoloway Recreation Area, then ride the paved Western Maryland Rail Trail one direction and return on the C&O Canal Towpath. It's flat, shaded, and dotted with aqueducts, the Round Top Cement Mill ruins, and views of the Potomac River, perfect for kids of all ages. Cap the day with a stop at a local Main Street restaurant or market just outside town. Bonus: Fort Frederick State Park's 1756 stone fort, only about 15 minutes east, hosts living-history weekends that turn a normal camping trip into a time-travel adventure.
