Camping near Mays Chapel, Maryland
Mays Chapel is an unincorporated community in Baltimore County, north of the Baltimore Beltway and within easy reach of the I-83 and I-695 corridors. RV travelers use it as a base for visits to downtown Baltimore, the Inner Harbor, Hampden, Towson, and the wider Chesapeake region, with day-trip access to Washington, D.C. and York, Pennsylvania.
The closest developed campground with RV sites is Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area, off Route 40 in Ellicott City, roughly a half-hour drive south. Private options within about an hour include Merry Meadows Recreation Farm in Freeland, Ramblin' Pines in Woodbine, and Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday closer to the capital. Bar Harbor RV Park and Marina adds a waterfront option on the Bush River near the upper Chesapeake Bay.
Most sites in the area are wooded, rolling, and family-oriented rather than resort-style. Renters should confirm site length, hookup type, and low-clearance access routes before booking a larger rig.
Things to do near Mays Chapel
Outdoor activity centers on the Patapsco and Gunpowder river valleys. Patapsco Valley State Park stretches along 32 miles of river corridor with hiking, fishing, mountain biking, and river access, and the Hollofield Area offers trail access to the river and a scenic overlook of the valley.
Guests at Merry Meadows Recreation Farm have access to on-site recreation and the NCR (Torrey C. Brown) Rail Trail nearby. Ramblin' Pines runs a pool, fishing pond, mini golf, playgrounds, and weekend events, with heavy Halloween programming in October.
Day trips are the other draw: the Inner Harbor and National Aquarium in Baltimore, the Smithsonian museums from the Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday, and Chesapeake Bay boating and fishing from Bar Harbor RV Park and Marina on the Bush River.

Overall good time. Gray and black water were 2/3 full though and would have been nice to be empty. WiFi was ok in location but sometimes didn’t work. Maybe suspension does need a look over not horrible but slightly loose. Fresh water all the way full would be nice also. I tried to leave it cleaner than I got it as well for the delay on drop off but made sure to get here early this am.

We had such a fantastic time in this RV. It was in ideal size for our family of 5. We travelled from Maryland, through ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. It was nice to drive and didn't feel too big. Clean throughout and no major issues. The host was very helpful and responded super quick to queries. We hope to rent again in the future.

How to book campgrounds near Mays Chapel
Maryland state park sites, including those at Patapsco Valley State Park, are reserved through the Maryland Park Service reservation system at parkreservations.maryland.gov. Reservations can be made up to 365 days in advance of arrival, with a maximum stay of 14 days. Check the listing before booking, as the Hollofield Area campground has been closed for renovations and may not be accepting reservations.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Merry Meadows Recreation Farm and Ramblin' Pines take reservations directly through their websites and third-party platforms, and Washington DC / Capitol KOA Holiday books through koa.com. Bar Harbor RV Park and Marina books directly. For fall weekends, especially October at Ramblin' Pines, book several weeks out.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Mays Chapel is rolling and wooded, so most sites sit under tree cover rather than in open fields. Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area has 73 sites arranged in two loops, some with 20- and 30-amp electric hookups, each with a picnic table and fire ring, plus restrooms, showers, and a dump station. An 11-foot-1-inch height restriction applies on one approach, so taller rigs must enter via the Route 40 East entrance.
Private parks lean full-hookup and family-focused. Bar Harbor RV Park and Marina has 91 full-hookup waterfront and interior sites on the Bush River, with pull-throughs for rigs up to 45 feet. Ramblin' Pines is wooded with tighter RV pads. Cell service is generally reliable on major carriers throughout the area.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Mays Chapel, MD?

On RVezy, campervans and travel trailers typically start around $95 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run about $175 to $275, and larger Class A coaches range from $250 to $450 per night. Booking midweek (Sunday through Thursday) and avoiding Maryland State Fair weekend in late August can lower your nightly rate. Pro tip: bookings of 5+ nights often unlock weekly discounts from hosts.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Mays%20Chapel%2C%20MarylandDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Maryland?
Good news: a standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Mays Chapel, even for a 30-foot Class C motorhome. Maryland does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal motorhomes under 26,000 pounds, which covers essentially every RV on RVezy. You must be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during checkout, so there's no extra paperwork on pickup day. Visiting from outside the United States? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised how straightforward it is.
mva.maryland.gov/drivers/Pages/license-classes.aspxWhat protection is included with my RVezy booking?
Every RV rental in Mays Chapel booked through RVezy automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit I-83 with peace of mind. You choose your coverage level at checkout, and the plan helps protect you against physical damage to the RV during your trip. Roadside assistance is included with every protection plan and covers common issues like flat tires, jump starts, fuel delivery, lockouts, and towing. Pro tip: many renters heading into Baltimore traffic or up to the Pennsylvania mountains pick a higher-tier plan for the lowest out-of-pocket exposure.

Booking is low-risk because RVezy, not individual hosts, sets the cancellation policy, and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund outcomes depend on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date. If a host cancels on you, RVezy will refund you or help you rebook. The full details live in RVezy's Help Center and are applied consistently across every listing in Maryland, so you don't need to scroll through fine print on each RV before booking.

Yes, pet-friendly RV rental in Mays Chapel is one of the most popular filters on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to see motorhomes and travel trailers whose hosts welcome dogs (and often cats). Maryland is great for pet travel: Oregon Ridge Park just minutes north in Cockeysville has leashed-dog trails, and the Loch Raven Reservoir fire roads are a local favorite for leashed hikes. Heading farther, Gunpowder Falls State Park and Patapsco Valley State Park both allow leashed pets in their campgrounds. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees, which typically run $25 to $75 per stay.

Many RVezy hosts in the Baltimore area will drive the RV to your driveway, a nearby campground, or even straight to the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, then set up hookups, level the rig, and walk you through every system. Use the Delivery filter on the search page and enter your Mays Chapel address to see hosts who serve the 21093 area. Pro tip: ask for delivery directly to your campsite at Gunpowder Falls or Codorus State Park so you arrive to a fully set-up RV and never tow a thing.

dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/central/Gunpowder.aspxWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Mays Chapel?
Mays Chapel has one of the longest comfortable RV seasons on the East Coast: April through early November is prime time. Spring (April-May) brings 60-75°F days and blooming dogwoods; summer (June-August) runs hot and humid with highs of 85-92°F, perfect for Chesapeake Bay trips but plan for heavy AC use; fall (September-October) is the local favorite with crisp 55-75°F days, vivid foliage, and fewer crowds at state parks. Winter RVing (December-February) is possible with highs in the 40s, and several hosts offer four-season rigs with heated tanks. Pro tip: book your Mays Chapel RV trip for the last two weeks of October when foliage peaks along the Gunpowder River.
weather.gov/lwx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, and you're far from alone. First time renting an RV is the most common scenario on RVezy in Maryland. Every host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup covering driving, hookups, leveling, awnings, and the toilet system, so you never leave the lot guessing. If you're nervous about the Baltimore Beltway (I-695) or tight neighborhood streets near Mays Chapel, choose a Class B campervan or 20 to 25 foot travel trailer for an easier learning curve, or simply book delivery and skip driving the RV entirely. RVezy support and 24/7 roadside assistance are one tap away if anything feels off mid-trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
Help is always close by. Every motorhome rental in Mays Chapel booked on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on I-83 or a dead battery at Gunpowder Falls is a phone call, not a crisis. Roadside assistance covers tire changes, jump starts, fuel delivery, lockout service, and towing to the nearest qualified repair shop. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app, most are local to the Baltimore area and respond quickly with troubleshooting tips. Pro tip: snap photos of the RV at pickup and save your host's number to your favorites before you pull away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is standard on RV rentals in Maryland, and Mays Chapel's location makes it a launchpad for epic multi-state trips. Popular routes include north to Gettysburg and Lancaster County, PA (1-2 hours), south to Washington DC and Shenandoah, VA (1-3 hours), east to the Delaware beaches (2 hours), and a longer haul to the Outer Banks, NC (5-6 hours). Travel into Canada is sometimes allowed with host approval and proper insurance documentation, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: an Ocean City to Cape May ferry combo makes a memorable RV road trip from Mays Chapel.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage should I budget for?
Budgeting fuel for your Mays Chapel RV trip is easier than people think. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, large Class A coaches 6 to 9 MPG, and a midsize SUV towing a travel trailer 10 to 14 MPG. Maryland gas prices typically run close to the national average, with stations near the Hunt Valley I-83 exits often cheaper than downtown. For a weekend trip to Ocean City (about 290 miles round-trip) in a Class C, expect roughly $90 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the Costco on York Road in Timonium before pickup, it's usually among the lowest prices within 15 miles of Mays Chapel.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground?
For the best campgrounds near Mays Chapel, plan ahead but don't stress. Maryland state parks like Gunpowder Falls, Patapsco Valley, and Assateague accept reservations through the Maryland State Parks reservation system up to one year in advance, and summer weekends at Assateague book up months out. Private parks like Bar Harbor RV Park and Cherry Hill Park accept reservations directly on their websites and usually have weekday openings even in peak season. For a family RV trip from Mays Chapel in July or August, book 60 to 90 days ahead; for spring or fall, 2 to 3 weeks is usually fine. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday to Wednesday) are often wide open even in summer.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/Reservations.aspxWhat are local driving conditions like around Mays Chapel?
Driving an RV around Mays Chapel is very manageable as long as you plan your route. I-83 runs right alongside the community and is the easiest way north toward Pennsylvania or south toward downtown Baltimore. Avoid the Jones Falls Expressway (I-83 south of the Beltway) in a tall RV, the Howard Street Tunnel and several downtown overpasses have low clearances. The Baltimore Beltway (I-695) handles big rigs well but gets congested 7-9 AM and 4-6 PM weekdays. Winter (December-February) can bring occasional snow and ice, so check the Maryland 511 site before driving. Pro tip: use the truck-route setting on apps like RV Trip Wizard to automatically avoid Baltimore's older low-clearance bridges.
chart.maryland.gov/What amenities do campgrounds near Mays Chapel offer?
Campgrounds near Mays Chapel are well-equipped for a smooth trip. Most state parks like Gunpowder Falls (Hereford area) and Patapsco Valley offer electric hookups (30/50 amp), potable water fill stations, and dump stations on-site, though full sewer hookups at individual sites are mostly found at private parks like Bar Harbor RV Park & Marina and Ramblin' Pines. Cherry Hill Park near DC offers the most resort-style amenities including pools, Wi-Fi, and laundry. For boondocking gear, most local campgrounds also have a camp store with propane refills and ice. Pro tip: the dump station at Patapsco Valley State Park (Hollofield area) is open to the public for a small fee, handy for a quick dump on your way home.
dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/central/PatapscoValley.aspxWhat features and amenities will my rental RV have?
RVs on RVezy in Mays Chapel come fully equipped and ready for camping. Expect comfortable sleeping (queen beds in most Class Cs, convertible dinettes for kids), a full kitchen with fridge/freezer, stovetop, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet, roof AC and furnace heat, and seatbelted seating for everyone in your party. Most rigs include a flat-screen TV, and many offer Wi-Fi hotspots, onboard generators, outdoor speakers, and bike racks. When browsing your campervan rental in Mays Chapel, check the listing's amenity list and Add-ons section for items like camp chairs, linens, kitchen kits, and generators. Pro tip: ask the host for their cellular signal experience at Gunpowder Falls, coverage varies by carrier in the river valley.
fcc.gov/consumers/guides/cell-phone-coverageWhat add-ons and options can I get with my rental?
RVezy hosts in the Mays Chapel area offer plenty of add-ons to make your trip easier. Common options include delivery and setup (often $2-$4 per mile from the host's location), generator use ($3-$5 per hour beyond included hours), linen and towel packages ($25-$50), camp chairs and outdoor mats, bike racks, propane tanks pre-filled, and pet cleaning fees. Pickup and dropoff usually happen at the host's home or a nearby meeting point, and most hosts in the Lutherville-Timonium corridor offer flexible afternoon pickup windows. Mileage policies typically include 100-150 free miles per night with $0.25-$0.45 per extra mile. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a pre-stocked linen kit and you can arrive at your campsite with literally just your suitcase.
consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0078-shopping-onlineHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure: you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card when you book, never directly to the host, which keeps your money protected. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is pre-authorized separately from your booking payment and released after dropoff once the host confirms no damage, fuel shortfall, or excess mileage. To avoid surprises, document the RV's condition at pickup with photos and video, return it with the same fuel level, and stay within your mileage allowance. Pro tip: a five-minute walkaround video at both pickup and dropoff in the host's Mays Chapel driveway is the single best way to ensure a smooth deposit release.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle Maryland's summer heat and humidity in an RV?
Mays Chapel summers are warm and humid, but modern RVs handle it well. Expect July and August highs of 85 to 92°F with high humidity, so plan to run the roof AC most of the day, which requires either a campsite with 30 or 50 amp shore power (every Maryland state park campground offers electric sites) or onboard generator use. Drive in the morning when traffic on I-695 and I-83 is lighter. Stay hydrated, especially at sun-exposed spots like Assateague Island. Pro tip: shoulder seasons (late April to mid-June and September to October) deliver the most comfortable weather and often the lowest nightly rates for an RV rental in Maryland.
