Atco camping overview
Atco sits in Camden County at the western edge of the New Jersey Pine Barrens, putting RV renters within a short drive of state forest campgrounds and full-service private resorts. The surrounding Pinelands region is defined by flat, sandy terrain, tea-colored rivers, and dense pitch pine and oak forest, and it supplies most of the camping inventory in the area.
The closest public option is Atsion Recreational Area in Wharton State Forest, which offers 50 tent and trailer sites, fire rings, picnic tables, and walk-in access to potable water, flush toilets, and showers. Private resorts fill in the gaps for larger rigs and families. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: South Jersey is the nearest themed family park, while Roamers Beach RV Resort, Lake Kandle, and Buena Vista Campground round out the mix with hookups, pools, and lake access.
Atco itself is roughly a half-hour drive from Philadelphia and about an hour from the Jersey Shore, making it a practical base for renters who want forest camping without giving up quick access to city amenities and the coast.
Things to do around Atco
Water and trails drive most trip plans. Swimming in Atsion Lake is permitted in summer when lifeguards are present, and the Atsion Recreation Area also offers picnic tables and charcoal grills, an accessible playground, nature trails, a canoe and kayak launch, and restroom and changing facilities. The 50-mile Batona Trail connects Bass River, Wharton, and Brendan T. Byrne State Forests, giving hikers a long-distance option straight out of the campground.
Families staying at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: South Jersey lean on the resort's pool complex and character events, while Lake Kandle adds a swim beach and waterslides. Buena Vista Campground and Roamers Beach RV Resort work well for renters who want on-site recreation between day trips.
Historic side trips are close by too. The Atsion Mansion, an early 19th-century ironmaster's home, sits directly across from the campground, and Batsto Village lies deeper in Wharton State Forest.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when Pine Barrens lakes are guarded and private resorts run full programming. Summer is also the wettest stretch of the year, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, so awnings and interior activities matter. Swimming in Atsion Lake is permitted in summer when lifeguards are present, and beach areas can hit capacity on hot weekends.
Spring and fall are strong shoulder seasons for RV renters. Days are mild, bugs ease off, and reservations open up. Fall foliage in the pine and oak canopy peaks in mid to late October, and cooler nights make campfires more comfortable.
Winter camping is possible for prepared renters, but water systems can be limited in freezing weather and the Atsion sanitary station operates from April to December. Many private resorts close or shift to weekend-only operation between late fall and early spring, so confirm hookup availability before booking a cold-weather trip.

How to book near Atco
State forest sites and private resorts use different systems, so plan on two accounts. Online reservations for New Jersey state park campgrounds are made at camping.nj.gov, and the state now accepts bookings up to 11 months in advance for most parks. Atsion Campground requires a minimum stay of two nights, and campers can make reservations both online and in person. Summer weekends at Atsion typically sell out weeks ahead.
RV size matters at Atsion. Sites are compact and commonly cited as accommodating rigs up to 22 feet, each with a fire ring and picnic table, with flush toilets, showers, and potable water within walking distance. There are no hookups, though a dump station is available on site. Larger rigs should book Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: South Jersey, Roamers Beach RV Resort, Lake Kandle, or Buena Vista Campground directly through each operator's website.
What to expect on arrival
At Wharton State Forest, check-in is not at the campsite. Check-in is mandatory at either the Batsto Office or the Atsion Office and must be done by the named permit holder with ID. Check-in and check-out time at New Jersey state park campsites is noon. The Atsion Office closes promptly at 4 PM, so plan travel accordingly.
Expect a rustic experience at state sites: sandy pads, limited cell coverage, and no shore power. The campground operates without on-site staff overnight, though state park police patrol the area, and cell service remains limited but manageable for most users. Private resorts near Atco run more traditional operations with gate check-ins, staffed offices, and full hookups, and most enforce quiet hours after 10 PM.
