Campgrounds and RV parks near Country Lake Estates, NJ

The Pine Barrens define the outdoor experience here. Brendan T Byrne State Forest offers hiking, mountain biking, birding, fishing and hunting, and the Batona Trail passes through the forest with shorter loops available at Pakim Pond. Paddlers head to the Wading, Mullica and Batsto rivers for slow-current canoe and kayak trips through cedar-stained water. Families staying at Timberland Lake Campground or Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort are within a short drive of Six Flags Great Adventure, Hurricane Harbor water park, and the Wild Safari drive-through. History-focused visitors can explore Batsto Village in Wharton State Forest and Whitesbog Village, where the first cultivated highbush blueberry was developed.

Peak camping season in the Pine Barrens runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with warm days, humid nights, and full activity schedules at private parks. Summer weekends fill quickly at both state and private campgrounds, so RV renters should book well in advance. Biting insects, especially mosquitoes and deerflies, are most active in July and August. Spring and fall are the most comfortable months for hiking and paddling, with cooler temperatures and fewer insects. Foliage color peaks in October across the pine and oak canopy, and the cranberry harvest in late September and October is a regional highlight around Whitesbog and Chatsworth. Winter camping is limited. Brendan T Byrne State Forest sites remain open year round unless otherwise posted, while many private RV parks close or run limited operations from late fall through mid-spring. Water hookups are typically shut off during freezing weather, and the state trailer sanitary station operates without a hose from November through March.

Sites in the Pine Barrens are generally flat and sandy, set among pitch pine, oak and Atlantic white cedar. State forest campgrounds are rustic: expect fire rings, picnic tables, flush toilets and showers within walking distance at Brendan T Byrne, and vault or composting toilets at primitive areas. The Wharton State Forest - Hawkins Bridge area is a primitive site along the Wading River without hookups. Private resorts offer a different experience, with full hookup sites, laundry, and on-site amenities. Cell coverage is inconsistent in deeper forest areas, and rivers here carry a natural tea color from cedar tannins, which is normal and safe. Maximum trailer length at Brendan T Byrne is around 35 feet, so larger rigs should confirm site suitability before booking.
