Campgrounds near Elwood, New Jersey
Elwood is an unincorporated community in Mullica Township, Atlantic County, sitting on the southern edge of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. The area puts campers within a short drive of both public campgrounds inside Wharton State Forest, the largest single tract of land within the New Jersey State Park System at over 124,000 acres, and a cluster of private RV parks that cater to larger rigs.
Wharton itself sits within the Pinelands National Reserve and offers mostly primitive sites. Primitive here means a numbered site with a fire ring, pit toilets, and in some cases no potable water, so campers rely on a hand pump or pack their own. Rig size is a real constraint: Atsion and Godfrey Bridge sites accept tents and trailers up to a maximum of 22 feet, and RVs longer than 22 feet will have a hard time accessing Wharton campgrounds.
For full hookups, most travelers head to the private parks nearby: Winding River Campground, Roamers Beach RV Resort, and Holly Acres Campground. Egg Harbor City Lake and Campground, run by the municipality, offers a lakeside option closer to town.
Things to do near Elwood
Water is the main draw. Wharton State Forest has rivers and streams suitable for kayaking and canoeing, including the Batsto, Wading, Mullica, and Oswego, all cutting through Pinelands habitat. Note that the Batsto River is currently closed to paddlers between Hampton Furnace and Lower Forge due to obstructions, so check advisories before planning a trip.
On land, there are 77 miles of marked hiking trails in Wharton, and more than 27 miles of the 50-mile Batona Trail run through the forest. Families often build a day around Batsto Village, where more than thirty nineteenth-century buildings survive, including the fully furnished Batsto Mansion, with guided tours available throughout the year. Swimming in Atsion Lake is permitted in summer when lifeguards are present. The Atlantic City boardwalk and beaches are roughly 30 minutes east.

Peak camping runs late spring through early fall, particularly May through September. Most Wharton State Forest campsites and cabins are open by reservation from April 1 through October 31, though the Atsion trailer sanitary station and campsites remain open all year, and Godfrey Bridge sites are also open year-round with pit toilets and potable water within walking distance. Private parks in the Pine Barrens generally follow an April-through-October pattern.
Summer weekends fill fast, especially anything close to Atsion Lake or the Wading River. Bug pressure and ticks are heaviest from late spring through summer, and the Pinelands are known habitat for Lone Star ticks.
Shoulder seasons bring cooler nights and thinner crowds. From June through November, the region can be affected by hurricanes or their remnants, with August through October the most active window. Winter is quiet: most private parks close, and campers at Wharton should expect freezing overnight temperatures and possible snow.

How to book a campsite near Elwood
State-forest sites in Wharton are booked through the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection reservation system. Online reservations can be made at camping.nj.gov, and reservations can typically be made up to 11 months in advance. First-time users create an NJ Campground Reservation account, then manage bookings from the same profile.
Mind rig size and access: RVs longer than 22 feet will have a hard time accessing Wharton campgrounds, and Wharton State Forest - Buttonwood Hill is primitive with only a small handful of sites and no potable water at the site itself. Private parks such as Winding River Campground, Roamers Beach RV Resort, and Holly Acres Campground book directly through their own websites or by phone, and Egg Harbor City Lake and Campground is handled through the municipality. Book summer weekends and holidays several months out.
What to expect
Terrain is flat, sandy, and pine-covered. The Pine Barrens surrounding Elwood feature sandy soil that drains well after rain, and camping elevations stay relatively level throughout the region. Access roads inside Wharton can be soft: sand roads of a mile or more lead into some primitive campgrounds and can be driven by a standard vehicle, though the narrow, tree-lined approaches limit larger RVs.
Primitive sites in Wharton mean minimal amenities. Primitive campsites are tent sites with fire rings; Batona, Bodine Field, Goshen Pond, Hawkins Bridge, and Mullica River have hand pumps for water and pit toilets, while Buttonwood Hill and Lower Forge have pit toilets and no potable water. Pack water, insect repellent, and firewood.
Bug protection is essential in tick country. Pets are only allowed at designated pet-friendly sites, with written proof of a current rabies vaccine required at check-in.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elwood,%20New%20JerseyWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Elwood, NJ?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Elwood. New Jersey does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal RVs under 26,000 pounds, which covers virtually every motorhome and trailer on RVezy. Approved RVezy drivers are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the booking platform, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country along with your valid license. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple it is to drive away from your Atlantic County pickup.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Elwood?
Every RVezy booking in Elwood comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built in, so you can hit the Garden State Parkway with confidence. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose from different coverage tiers at checkout based on how much peace of mind you want. Hosts do not pick your coverage tier, you do, which means you stay in control of your Elwood RV trip from booking to drop-off. Review each tier's deductible and coverage limits before you confirm to match the plan to your travel style.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Elwood RV rental?
Booking is low risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not the host, and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in dates without stress. After that window, refund eligibility depends on how far out you cancel and circumstances like severe weather or natural disasters, which matter in coastal South Jersey where the occasional nor'easter or hurricane watch can disrupt plans. If you ever need to change dates, RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: book early for July and August Jersey Shore weekends, because the best rigs in Elwood disappear fast.

Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before pulling out of the host's driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Elwood RV rental to other states or into Canada?

Popular routes include Cape May to the Outer Banks (about 7 hours south), the Poconos and Catskills (3 to 4 hours north), Acadia National Park (10 hours via I-95), and Shenandoah National Park (about 5 hours southwest). Cross-border trips to Canada may be allowed depending on the host and protection plan, so message them through the listing before booking. Heads up: travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: confirm your route with the host so they can flag any toll-heavy stretches like the New Jersey Turnpike.

For summer weekends, book your campground as soon as you lock in your RV. As long as the RV comes back in the condition it left, your deposit is released after the trip. Doing a quick walkthrough video at pickup and drop-off is the easiest way to avoid disputes. Loop back inland to Atsion Lake in Wharton State Forest for swimming, kayaking, and a campfire under dark skies. Storybook Land in Egg Harbor Township is a quick hit with younger kids.
