Campgrounds near Hackettstown
Hackettstown sits in Warren County in northwestern New Jersey, at the edge of the Highlands region. The town works well as a base for RV travelers because two state park campgrounds and private lakeside resorts sit within a short drive of Route 80.
Stephens State Park lies about two miles east of town along the Musconetcong River and offers 39 tent and small-trailer sites with fire rings and picnic tables. Jenny Jump State Forest, roughly 20 minutes west near Hope, adds 22 tent and trailer sites plus eight shelters on top of Jenny Jump Mountain. Panther Lake Camping Resort in Andover Township is the largest private option in the area, spread across 160 wooded acres around a 45-acre lake, with RV sites, cabins, and a full slate of amenities.
Smaller and more utilitarian choices round out the region. Fla-Net Park in Flanders sits just off Interstate 80, and Goodland Country Club and Spa on Drakestown Road offers another nearby camping option close to Hackettstown.
Things to do near Hackettstown
Outdoor activities dominate the area. The Musconetcong River is stocked with brown, rainbow, and brook trout each spring by the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife, and fishing is popular from the banks inside Stephens State Park. The park also has six miles of marked trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.
Jenny Jump State Forest has roughly 14 miles of hiking trails with panoramic views toward the Kittatinny Ridge and the Great Meadows, plus the UACNJ Greenwood Observatory, which hosts free public astronomy programs on Saturday evenings from April through October.
For family stops, Panther Lake Camping Resort has a sand beach, swimming pool, mini golf, and boat rentals on its lake. Nearby Waterloo Village, the Morris Canal locks at Saxton Falls, and hiking in Allamuchy Mountain State Park are all within a short drive.

The New Jersey state park campgrounds around Hackettstown run on a strict season. Stephens State Park and the Jenny Jump State Forest tent and trailer sites are open April 1 through October 31, though Jenny Jump's eight shelters near the mountain summit stay open year-round with wood-burning stoves. Panther Lake Camping Resort operates roughly April 15 through October 31 for transient stays.
Spring brings trout stocking on the Musconetcong River and cool nights that can still drop below freezing in April. Summer is peak season, with warm, humid days, frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and heavy weekend demand at the lakeside private parks. Bug pressure is real: ticks are present all season, and mosquitoes get bad in July and August.
Fall delivers reliable foliage across the Highlands ridges, typically peaking in mid to late October. Winter closes the state park tent and trailer sites, but Jenny Jump's mountaintop shelters remain open for cold-weather stays.

I accept the charges as followed. However I do not accept charge for 4 days. I only had the vehicle for 3 days. I'd like to dispute the 4th day charged for 250.00

How to book a site
New Jersey state park campgrounds use a single reservation system at camping.nj.gov, run by the state Department of Environmental Protection. Stephens State Park and Jenny Jump State Forest both take bookings there, with sites bookable up to 11 months in advance. Alcohol is not permitted on state park campsites.
Private campgrounds book directly. Panther Lake Camping Resort takes reservations through its website or by phone. Fla-Net Park and Goodland Country Club and Spa handle bookings directly through the operator, so confirm terms before paying a deposit.
Book early for weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Riverside sites at Stephens and the eight mountaintop shelters at Jenny Jump fill first, and popular Panther Lake weekends sell out weeks in advance. Trailer length matters: Stephens accepts rigs up to about 40 feet, while Jenny Jump's access road effectively limits sites to rigs of about 25 feet.
What to expect on site
The state park campgrounds in this area are rustic. Stephens State Park has fire rings, picnic tables, flush toilets, and a shower building, but no water, electric, or sewer hookups at sites. Jenny Jump offers a similar setup: showers and toilets within walking distance, no utility hookups at the tent and trailer sites, and rig length effectively limited to smaller trailers and Class B or C motorhomes.
For full hookups, plan on a private park. Panther Lake Camping Resort has 30 and 50 amp sites with full hookups, cable connections, laundry, and a general store. Fla-Net Park sits directly off I-80, so expect road noise close to the interstate.
Black bears live throughout the region. Store food securely, follow bear-aware practices, and keep pets leashed. Cell service is spotty at the mountain and lakeside parks.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hackettstown%2C%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special driver's license to rent an RV in Hackettstown?
Great news for first-timers: your regular Class D New Jersey driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Hackettstown. New Jersey does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RV use, even for larger Class A motorhomes, as long as you are renting for recreation. You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and the platform verifies your ID digitally before pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most renters are surprised by how simple the licensing side really is.
nj.gov/mvc/license/driverlicense.htmIs insurance and roadside assistance included with my RVezy rental in Hackettstown?
Yes. Every RV rental in Hackettstown booked on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered for eligible damage and have help a phone call away if you get a flat on Route 80 or need a jump at Jenny Jump State Forest. You choose your protection level at checkout, not the host, so you can pick the coverage that matches your comfort level. Roadside assistance is included with every protection plan, giving renters real peace of mind before clicking Book.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat happens if I need to cancel my Hackettstown RV rental?
You can book with confidence. RVezy sets the cancellation policy at the platform level, so hosts do not decide it, and the exact policy that applies to your trip is shown during checkout. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits so your plans are protected. New Jersey weather can shift quickly in spring and fall, so it is reassuring to know the policy is consistent and transparent. Lock in your dates early for popular weekends like peak foliage, then review the policy details at checkout.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Hackettstown?
Yes. Many pet-friendly RV rental Hackettstown listings welcome dogs and cats. Toggle the Pet Friendly filter on RVezy and message the host about your specific pet. Once on the road, Stephens State Park allows leashed pets at designated sites with proof of vaccination, and Jenny Jump State Forest requires leashes no longer than six feet. The Musconetcong River trails near Stephens are popular with dogs, and downtown Hackettstown has dog-friendly patios along Main Street. Bring your pet vaccination records as a PDF on your phone, since New Jersey state campgrounds will ask to see them at check-in.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/stephens-state-park/Can the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Hackettstown?
Yes, and this is a great option for first timers. Many hosts offer RV delivery Hackettstown guests appreciate, meaning they will drive the motorhome to your campsite at Stephens State Park, Panther Lake Camping Resort, or even your driveway, then handle setup, leveling, and hookups. You skip the stress of maneuvering a large rig down narrow streets and simply walk in with your groceries. Filter listings by Delivery on RVezy to see which hosts deliver to your zip code and the associated fee. Delivery is especially helpful if you have never towed before or you are flying in to a nearby airport.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hackettstown%2C%20New%20JerseyHow far can I drive, and are there RVs with unlimited mileage near Hackettstown?
You have plenty of range for a classic Hackettstown RV trip. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per day, and RV rental with unlimited mileage is available from select hosts, especially for longer bookings. Additional miles typically run $0.30 to $0.50 each. From Hackettstown you can easily reach the Delaware Water Gap (about 25 miles), the Jersey Shore at Asbury Park (about 75 miles), and the Catskills (about 90 miles). If you are planning a longer RV road trip from Hackettstown, message hosts before booking and ask for an unlimited-mileage quote. Many will offer a flat package for trips of five nights or more.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hackettstown%2C%20New%20JerseyWhere are the best campgrounds near Hackettstown for an RV?
You have great choices. The best campgrounds near Hackettstown include Stephens State Park (along the Musconetcong River, open seasonally), Jenny Jump State Forest in Hope (wooded sites with mountain views, best for smaller RVs), Panther Lake Camping Resort in Andover (lakefront with full hookups and a pool, about 12 miles north), and The Great Divide Campground in Newton (about 16 miles, big rig friendly with family activities). Reserve New Jersey state campgrounds through the official NJ State Parks reservation system as soon as your booking window opens, because riverside sites at Stephens fill up fast.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/stephens-state-park/When is the best time of year for RV camping in Hackettstown?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for RV camping Hackettstown adventures, with late September and early October standing out when the Kittatinny Ridge fills with fall color. Summer highs typically run in the 80s with humidity, spring averages in the 50s to 70s, and fall delivers crisp days perfect for hiking near Jenny Jump Mountain. Winters can dip into the teens at night, and many state campgrounds close from late fall through March, so cold-weather trips work best with four-season RVs at private parks like Panther Lake. Book the weekend after Labor Day for fewer crowds, fewer mosquitoes, and excellent trout fishing on the Musconetcong River.
weather.gov/phi/I have never rented an RV before. What support will I get in Hackettstown?
You are in good hands. First time renting an RV in Hackettstown is straightforward because every host provides a full walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, water tanks, slide-outs, the generator, and how to dump waste at stations like the one at Panther Lake. You can message your host before booking with any questions, and many include a printed cheat sheet in the RV. RVezy support and roadside assistance are available 24/7 if you get stuck. Start with a Class C motorhome or campervan rental Hackettstown for your first trip, and head to nearby Stephens State Park so you can practice setup close to home.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002221374-Renting-an-RVWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and mechanical issues are handled with one phone call. You will also have your host contact information through the platform for quick questions about the specific rig. For medical emergencies, Hackettstown Medical Center on Willow Grove Street is the nearest hospital. During your walkthrough, take quick photos of the fuse panel, propane shut-off, and water heater bypass. Most on-the-road issues are quick fixes once you know where the switches are, and RVezy support is always a message away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityCan I take my Hackettstown RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, US interstate travel is allowed, and Hackettstown is well positioned for it. From here you can cross into Pennsylvania in about 20 minutes at the Delaware Water Gap, reach New York in under an hour, and travel further to Virginia, Ohio, or New England without extra paperwork. Travel into Canada may be permitted with host approval and additional considerations, so message the host before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Popular interstate routes include the Pocono Mountains, the Finger Lakes, and Cape Cod.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat about fuel costs and MPG for an RV trip from Hackettstown?
Budgeting is simpler than you might think. Expect roughly 8 to 10 MPG for Class A motorhomes, 10 to 14 MPG for Class C, 15 to 20 MPG for campervans, and your tow vehicle MPG for travel trailers. New Jersey gas prices typically run near or slightly below the national average, and attendants pump it for you, since self-serve is not allowed in the state. For a 200-mile round trip in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel depending on prices that week. Fill up before crossing into Pennsylvania, where self-serve is the norm, and use stations along Route 46 that are easy to access with a larger rig.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Hackettstown?
For state parks, book the moment your dates open. Stephens State Park and Jenny Jump State Forest reserve through the official New Jersey state parks reservation system, and summer weekends, July 4th, and peak foliage in October fill up months in advance. Aim for four to six months ahead for state campgrounds, and two to three months for private parks like Panther Lake or The Great Divide. For last-minute trips, Tuesday and Wednesday nights almost always have openings, even in summer. Set up an availability notification on the NJ state parks portal so you are alerted the moment a cancellation opens at the site you want.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/reserve/What are driving conditions like around Hackettstown for an RV?
Driving an RV around Hackettstown is very manageable. Route 80 and Route 46 are wide, well maintained, and the main arteries in and out of town. Within town, stick to Main Street and Mountain Avenue and avoid narrower side streets with parked cars. Heading toward Jenny Jump or Allamuchy, expect some rolling hills and tight curves, so take it slow. The Garden State Parkway has restrictions on certain trailers, and the NJ Turnpike has its own rules for towed setups, so plan your route in advance. Always check posted height and weight limits before approaching older bridges in Warren County.
state.nj.us/transportation/What amenities do campgrounds near Hackettstown offer, and where can I dump and fill water?
You will find a full range of amenities. Private parks like Panther Lake Camping Resort and The Great Divide Campground offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), dump stations, hot showers, laundry, pools, and camp stores. State parks like Stephens and Jenny Jump provide flush toilets, showers, and potable water, but no hookups, so you will run on your tanks and generator. The closest dump stations to downtown Hackettstown are at the nearby private resorts, which often serve non-guests for a small fee. Top off your fresh water before leaving the host home to save time at busy state park spigots on Friday afternoons.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/stephens-state-park/What features and amenities come with a typical RV rental in Hackettstown?
A typical motorhome rental Hackettstown listing comes equipped with a queen or king bed, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, a dinette that converts to a bed, air conditioning, a propane furnace, fresh, grey, and black water tanks, and often a TV. Most Class C rigs sleep four to six people with seatbelts for those traveling. Many hosts include linens, kitchen kits, camp chairs, and outdoor mats, while select listings offer solar, WiFi boosters, or backup cameras. Filter for Sleeps 6 or more for a family RV trip Hackettstown weekend, then confirm legal travel seatbelt count with the host.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hackettstown%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for my Hackettstown rental?
Popular add-ons include linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, bikes, generators (sometimes included, sometimes billed per hour over a daily allowance), portable grills, outdoor furniture, and WiFi hotspots. For pickup, you can collect the RV from the host home in or near Hackettstown, or pay for delivery directly to Stephens State Park, a nearby private campground, or your own driveway. Most hosts ask you to return with a similar fuel level and empty waste tanks, or pay a dump fee. Bundle delivery, setup, and dump-on-return when offered, since the flat package price is often cheaper than a la carte and turns the trip into a true just-show-up vacation.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hackettstown%2C%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
It is straightforward and secure. You pay the full rental cost through RVezy at booking using a credit or debit card, and no cash changes hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and is released after the host confirms the RV was returned in good condition. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkthrough video at pickup and drop-off, return on time with the agreed fuel level, and keep all communication on the RVezy platform. Using a credit card for the deposit hold keeps your debit account untouched during your Hackettstown RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I RV in Hackettstown during winter, and how do I prep for cold weather?
Yes, winter RVing here is a real adventure with the right planning. Many New Jersey state campgrounds close from late fall through March, but private parks like Panther Lake stay open year-round, and Jenny Jump State Forest offers heated shelters bookable in winter. With overnight temperatures often in the teens to 30s, look for RVs marketed as four-season or with heated holding tanks, and confirm with hosts that the furnace, skirting, and antifreeze setup are ready for cold weather. Use shore power when possible, manage the gray tank to prevent freezing, and stock extra propane. A winter trip toward Mountain Creek or the Delaware Water Gap for snowshoeing is magical, with quiet campgrounds nearly to yourself.
