Camping near Hampton, New Jersey
Hampton sits in Hunterdon County in northwestern New Jersey, within easy reach of two reservoirs, the Musconetcong River valley, and the Delaware River corridor. The area draws RV travelers because it combines state-park camping with private riverside resorts, all within a short drive of the town.
The closest public option is Spruce Run State Recreational Area, set in the rolling hills of Hunterdon County, with a reservoir that covers 1,290 acres and has 15 miles of shoreline for recreation. Just south, Voorhees State Park spans roughly 1,400 acres of wooded hills in northern Hunterdon County with multi-use trails and an on-site observatory. Mountainview Campground offers a more rustic setting nearby.
For river-based trips, campers head west to the Delaware. Driftstone on the Delaware is a private family campground located on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River, and Delaware River Family Campground sits on the New Jersey side in Columbia. Together these five properties cover the full range from primitive tent pads to full-hookup RV pull-throughs.
Things to do around Hampton
Water recreation anchors most trips. Activities at Spruce Run include boating, fishing, and swimming, with roughly 30 species of fish in the reservoir. The lake supports sailing, kayaking, and shore fishing from multiple access points, and the Highlands Trail runs through the park for hikers.
On land, Voorhees State Park is the hub for hiking and stargazing. The 26-inch Newtonian reflector is one of the largest privately owned telescopes in New Jersey, and the New Jersey Astronomical Association runs public sky-watching programs at the on-site observatory. Eleven multi-use trails wind through the park.
On the Delaware side, Driftstone on the Delaware and Delaware River Family Campground both offer river access. The Delaware supports tubing, kayaking, and fishing for smallmouth bass, walleye, and channel catfish, and the Appalachian Trail crosses nearby ridges for day hikes.

This is a strongly seasonal region. Spruce Run offers 67 tent and trailer sites and three shelters from April 1 through October 31, and Voorhees State Park's family campsites, shelters, and group sites are available April 1 through October 31. Private campgrounds run on similar calendars: Delaware River Family Campground operates through the warm-weather months, and Driftstone's camping season runs from mid-May to mid-October.
Summer weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day are peak. Lakefront and riverfront sites fill first, and Driftstone applies weekend and holiday minimum-stay rules through the summer. Booking well ahead for holiday weekends is essential.
Spring and fall bring milder temperatures, fewer crowds, and better trail conditions, with foliage peaking in October. Winter closes the campgrounds in the area, though Voorhees State Park's multi-use trails remain open and are used for cross-country skiing when snow allows, although they are not groomed.
How to book
State parks and private campgrounds use different systems. For Spruce Run and Voorhees, all advanced camping reservations must be made online at camping.nj.gov. Same-day reservations can be made online until 2:00 p.m., and walk-in reservations are accepted if space is available; callers should check the park office or the campground's availability view online the morning of arrival. Pets and alcoholic beverages are prohibited in the campgrounds at New Jersey state parks.
Private campgrounds handle bookings directly. Driftstone reservations are made in person or by calling the office; the campground does not offer online booking. Delaware River Family Campground and Mountainview Campground accept reservations through their own websites and offices.
RV travelers should confirm hookup type when booking. Spruce Run has 7 trailer-only campsites with water and 30/50-amp electric hookups, sites 1 to 4 and 55 to 57. Voorhees sites do not have electric or water hookups.
What to expect on site
Facilities vary widely between the state parks and private options. Spruce Run offers tent and trailer sites plus shelters equipped with wood stoves, tables, benches, and bunk beds, along with modern restrooms with hot showers, a dump station, playgrounds, picnic tables, and fire rings at every site. Voorhees is more basic, with tent and trailer sites, rustic shelters, and modern restrooms and showers within walking distance, but no electric or water at individual sites.
Private campgrounds lean toward full-service. Driftstone campsites are offered with different hook-up options and the campground allows canoeing, boating, kayaking, rafting, and fishing on a three-mile stretch of the Delaware. Delaware River Family Campground and Mountainview Campground round out the private options with cabin rentals and family-oriented amenities.
One travel note for larger rigs: Driftstone advises following its posted directions because GPS routing may direct motorhomes and trailers over the Belvidere-Riverton bridge, which has an 8-ton weight limit.

Booking is low risk: RVezy sets a clear cancellation policy that applies to every Hampton RV rental, including a money-back grace period right after you book. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. You do not negotiate this with your host, RVezy handles cancellations directly, and the policy is not displayed inside individual listings. Many hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome at popular spots like Spruce Run Recreation Area, Round Valley Recreation Area, or your own driveway in Hunterdon County. They will level the rig, connect hookups, walk you through every system, and then return to pick it up. weather.gov/phi/I've never rented an RV before, will I be okay driving it?
You've got this. First time renting an RV is easier than people expect, especially around Hampton where rural Route 31, Route 22, and Interstate 78 give you plenty of room to settle in. Every RVezy host provides an in-person orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, hookups, the generator, slide-outs, and dumping. If you're nervous about size, choose a Class C motorhome or a campervan rental Hampton hosts have available, both drive similarly to a large van. Pro tip: do a short shakedown drive to Clinton (about 8 miles) before heading further. By the time you reach the Delaware River, you'll feel like a pro.
nj.gov/mvc/driving/What happens if I have a breakdown or need help on the road?
You are never alone. Every motorhome rental in Hampton booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If something goes sideways near Spruce Run Reservoir or on Interstate 78, you call the roadside line, they dispatch local help, and RVezy support coordinates with your host. Most hosts in Hunterdon County answer messages quickly and can troubleshoot small things like a tripped breaker or stuck slide over text. Pro tip: save the roadside number, host contact, and RVezy Help Center link in your phone before you leave the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Hampton RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel from Hampton is wide open and one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Hampton. You can roll into Pennsylvania (the Poconos are 60 miles away), New York (the Catskills are 90 miles north), Vermont, Maine, or down to Virginia without any extra paperwork. Travel into Canada may be allowed but depends on the specific host and protection package, so message before booking if a cross-border trip is in your plans. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: popular multi-state loops from Hampton include the Finger Lakes (4 hours) and Acadia National Park (8 hours).
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Hampton, NJ?
Fuel is the biggest variable, so let's make it predictable. Class C motorhomes around Hampton average 8 to 10 miles per gallon, Class A rigs get 6 to 9, travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 mpg loaded), and campervans can hit 16 to 20. New Jersey gas prices in 2025 have hovered around $3.10 to $3.50 per gallon for regular and $3.80 to $4.20 for diesel, often cheaper than neighboring New York. For a 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C, budget roughly $110 to $140 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in New Jersey before crossing into NY or PA, and remember NJ is a full-service state, an attendant pumps for you.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Hampton?
Plan ahead and you'll get the best sites. New Jersey State Parks (Spruce Run, Round Valley, Voorhees, Jenny Jump) use the ReserveAmerica system and accept bookings up to 6 months in advance. Summer weekends and fall foliage weekends at Spruce Run sell out within days of opening, so set a calendar reminder. Private parks like Mountain View Campground often book 2 to 3 months out for peak weekends. Pro tip: for spontaneous trips, target Sunday-through-Thursday arrivals or look at sites with electric-only (rather than full hookup), they often have last-minute openings within an hour of Hampton.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/camping.htmlWhat are local driving conditions like around Hampton?
Driving around Hampton is genuinely RV-friendly. You're at the intersection of Interstate 78 (wide, well-maintained) and Route 31, with rural state highways like Route 173 and Route 22 perfect for cruising. Watch for a few tight country roads in northwest Hunterdon County and low-clearance railroad bridges in older towns like Clinton and High Bridge, so stay on designated truck routes. Winter (December to March) can bring snow and ice, plan around storms. Pro tip: avoid Interstate 78 eastbound toward NYC during weekday afternoon rush hour (3 to 7 PM), and remember New Jersey doesn't allow you to pump your own fuel, just pull up and the attendant handles it.
state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/roads/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Hampton, NJ?
Most campgrounds within 30 minutes of Hampton offer the essentials and then some. Spruce Run Recreation Area has electric hookups (no water/sewer at sites), modern restrooms with hot showers, a sanitary dump station, potable water fills, swimming beach, and boat launch. Round Valley offers similar amenities plus wilderness sites. Voorhees State Park has electric sites, showers, and a dump station. For full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric, Wi-Fi), private parks like Mountain View Campground or Panther Lake Camping Resort (40 minutes north) are your best bet. Pro tip: top off fresh water and dump tanks before leaving any state park, the next dump station may be 20+ miles away.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/spruce.htmlWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Hampton?

Most Class C and Class A rigs include a TV, and many hosts offer a generator and Wi-Fi hotspot as add-ons. Campervans are leaner but cozier, perfect for couples. Pro tip: review the listing's amenities checklist carefully and message the host to confirm specifics like a coffee maker, outdoor chairs, or kid-friendly bedding, most are happy to include them.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/What add-ons and pickup options are available for a Hampton RV rental?
You can customize your RV rental in Hampton with helpful host add-ons: linen and kitchen kits ($50 to $100), generators ($15 to $25 per night), bike racks, kayak racks, camping chairs, propane refills, portable Wi-Fi, and even pre-stocked groceries. Pickup is usually at the host home in or near Hampton in the early afternoon, with return the following morning, though many hosts flex on timing if you ask. Delivery and full setup at your campground are available from many listings. Pro tip: bundle add-ons when you book, hosts often discount the package, and confirm pickup and dropoff times in writing through the RVezy message thread.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hampton,%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work for a Hampton RV rental?
It is straightforward and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, which protects both sides. A security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is placed as a separate hold a few days before pickup and released after return, assuming no damage or extra cleaning is needed. The trip price includes the nightly rate, RVezy service fee, and your chosen protection plan. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff so any pre-existing scratches or scuffs are clearly documented, it makes the deposit return seamless and keeps your RV camping trip in Hampton stress-free.
