Campgrounds near Mystic Island

Mystic Island sits on the mainland side of Little Egg Harbor in southern Ocean County, New Jersey, tucked between Great Bay and the pine forests that stretch inland. The area works as a base for RV travelers who want quiet Pinelands camping within a short drive of Long Beach Island, Atlantic City, and the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge. Most campgrounds in the immediate area fall inside the Pine Barrens, on sandy soils under pitch pine and oak. Bass River State Forest is New Jersey's first state forest, established in 1905, and sits within the Pinelands National Reserve, a one million acre ecologically sensitive area. Private options such as Atlantic Shore Pines Campground, Pilgrim Lake Campgrounds, Chestnut Lake RV Campground, and Bakers Acres Campgrounds fill in around the state land with full-hookup sites, cabins, and family amenities. The area sits roughly 30 minutes from Atlantic City and a short drive from Long Beach Island, which makes day trips to the beach, boardwalks, and back-bay marinas straightforward from any of the nearby campgrounds.

Things to do near Mystic Island

Water dominates the trip list. Lake Absegami inside Bass River State Forest is a focal point of the park, providing opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing, and boat rentals are available at the lake for those without their own equipment. Pilgrim Lake Campgrounds has canoe rentals on a 20 acre freshwater lake, and back-bay paddling launches sit within a short drive of Mystic Island itself. On land, hiking centers on the Pine Barrens. The Batona Trail, well marked with pink blazes, runs for 53 miles through Bass River State Forest, Wharton State Forest and Brendan T. Byrne State Forest, with trailhead access from the Bass River camping areas. Families also head to the Tuckerton Seaport, Fantasy Island Amusement Park on Long Beach Island, and the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge for bird watching along the Atlantic Flyway.

The RV season around Mystic Island is shaped by shore traffic and Pinelands weather. Private parks operate on a seasonal calendar: Pilgrim Lake Campgrounds is open May 1 to October 31, and Thousand Trails Chestnut Lake operates as a seasonal campground from April through November. Bass River State Forest keeps campsites, cabins, shelters, and lean-tos available across a longer stretch of the year, with some sites available for year-round camping. Summer weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day are the busy period, and reservations fill early. During peak seasons, it is advisable to make reservations well in advance as this is a popular campground. Long Beach Island beach traffic, Atlantic City events, and Pinelands festivals all push demand from late June through mid-August. Shoulder seasons offer easier booking and cooler hiking. Spring brings mild days but active ticks and mosquitoes in the pines, and fall carries warm afternoons with cool nights well into October. Winter camping is limited to the state forest and a small number of year-round private parks.

We had a great experience with RV Cozy Camper. The camper truly lived up to its name — it was clean, comfortable, and well maintained, making our trip relaxing and enjoyable. Everything we needed was thoughtfully provided, and the layout made the space feel welcoming and functional. It was easy to tow and set up, which helped take a lot of stress out of the trip. The attention to detail really showed and made us feel comfortable right away. Communication was smooth and helpful, and any questions we had were answered promptly. Overall, this was a wonderful experience, and we would absolutely recommend RV Cozy Camper to anyone looking for a reliable and comfortable camping option. How to book campsites near Mystic Island

State-run sites use one system. Online reservations for Bass River State Forest can be made at camping.nj.gov, the New Jersey State Park Service portal, which handles tent sites, RV sites, cabins, shelters, and lean-tos. When making reservations, an online map is accessible to view the layout of both the North Shore and South Shore camping areas around Lake Absegami. Private parks book directly. Atlantic Shore Pines Campground, Pilgrim Lake Campgrounds, and Bakers Acres Campgrounds each take reservations by phone or through their own websites. Thousand Trails Chestnut Lake accommodates RVs up to 37 feet with full hookups including electric, water, and sewer connections, though site assignments work on a first-come basis rather than advance reservations for specific spots, so larger rigs should confirm site fit at check-in; most campgrounds fill completely on summer weekends.

What to expect on the ground

Sites here sit on sandy Pine Barrens soil under pine and oak canopy. Atlantic Shore Pines Campground offers RV camping with full hookups and pull-through options just outside Tuckerton, with a mix of transient and long-term sites where close spacing between rigs can reduce privacy, and the sandy surface tracks easily into rigs and requires frequent sweeping. Pilgrim Lake offers wooded, private sites, but the roads within the campground are very narrow and heavily wooded with no easy turns, and seasoned trailer pullers with a 31 foot travel trailer find it challenging. Bring bug spray and check for ticks after hikes. State forest sites are more rustic than private parks: expect picnic tables, fire rings, and vault or shared bathhouses rather than full hookups. Cell service is generally reliable near Tuckerton and thinner deeper into the forest.
