Camping near Pemberton, New Jersey
Pemberton sits on the northern edge of the New Jersey Pine Barrens in Burlington County, giving RV renters direct access to two large state forests in the state park system. Brendan T Byrne State Forest lies immediately south of town and covers roughly 37,000 acres of pitch pine, oak, and Atlantic white cedar swamp, with a campground, hiking trails, and the historic cranberry village of Whitesbog within its boundaries.
Wharton State Forest, the largest single tract of land in the New Jersey State Park System, extends farther south and contains the developed Atsion Recreational Area on Atsion Lake plus a network of primitive campgrounds along the Wading, Mullica, Batsto, and Oswego rivers. Wharton State Forest - Hawkins Bridge is one of these riverside primitive sites, accessed by unpaved forest roads.
For RV renters wanting hookups and resort amenities, private options include Timberland Lake Campground and Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort, both within a reasonable drive of Six Flags Great Adventure.
Things to do around Pemberton
The Batona Trail runs roughly 50 miles through the Pine Barrens and links Brendan T Byrne, Wharton, and Bass River State Forests, making it the backbone for day hikes and backpack loops from any campground in the area. Mountain biking is permitted on miles of sand roads in Wharton State Forest, and hiking trails at Brendan T Byrne State Forest include easy loops near Pakim Pond.
Paddlers can put in on the Wading, Mullica, Batsto, or Oswego rivers, all classic Pine Barrens tea-colored waterways. Atsion Lake at Atsion Recreational Area has a guarded swimming beach in summer when lifeguards are on duty, a playground, and canoe and kayak launches.
Historic stops include Batsto Village, Atsion Mansion, and Whitesbog, where the first cultivated highbush blueberry was developed. Families staying at Timberland Lake Campground or Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort can pair camping with Six Flags Great Adventure and Hurricane Harbor.

Atsion Recreational Area campsites in Wharton State Forest are open year-round, with the trailer sanitary station operating April 1 through October 31. Brendan T Byrne State Forest runs a seasonal campground, and private parks like Timberland Lake Campground and Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort operate a warm-weather season built around themed weekends and pool access.
Late spring through early fall is the most comfortable stretch for camping, with mild days and generally moderate humidity in May and September. July and August bring hot, humid weather and afternoon thunderstorms, along with strong mosquito and tick pressure in the Pine Barrens. Insect repellent and regular tick checks are important.
Fall brings cooler nights, fewer bugs, and cranberry-harvest color in the bogs around Whitesbog. Winter camping at Atsion is possible but cold, with limited services, and primitive Wharton sites see much less use during that stretch.

How to book a campsite near Pemberton
Reservations for New Jersey state forest campgrounds, including Brendan T Byrne State Forest, Atsion Recreational Area, and Wharton State Forest - Hawkins Bridge, are made through the state's online system at camping.nj.gov. Sites can be booked from two days up to a year in advance, with a two-night minimum and a 14-night maximum stay.
At Brendan T Byrne State Forest, only a limited number of sites are suitable for RVs and trailers, and pet-friendly sites are a subset of those. Wharton State Forest campgrounds, including Atsion, have a 22-foot trailer length limit, so larger rigs should confirm access before booking.
Private campgrounds such as Timberland Lake Campground and Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and Six Flags event dates fill early, so book well ahead.
What to expect at Pemberton-area campgrounds

visitnj.org/things-to-do/camping-rvWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Pemberton, NJ?
Great news, a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Pemberton. New Jersey does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement to operate a personal-use motorhome, campervan, or travel trailer for recreational use. To book on RVezy you generally need to be 25 or older, and your identity is confirmed through the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto association before your trip, usually under $20, and pair it with your home country license. Most first-time renters in New Jersey are surprised how simple the paperwork actually is.

You can book an RV rental in Pemberton with real peace of mind. Every booking through RVezy includes a renter protection plan that covers damage to the vehicle during your trip, plus 24/7 roadside assistance bundled in at no extra cost. During checkout you choose your level of coverage, not the host, so you control how much protection feels right for your family. If a tire goes flat on Route 70 through the Pine Barrens or you need a tow near Brendan T. Byrne State Forest, one phone call gets help dispatched. That safety net is why so many first-time renters feel confident driving away on day one.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Pemberton RV rental?
Plans change, and booking an RV rental in Pemberton is genuinely low-risk. RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy, and every booking includes a full money-back grace period right after you book so you have breathing room to confirm time off, weather, or campground availability. Refunds beyond that grace window depend on how far out your trip start date is. The full details live in the RVezy Help Center, but the short version is: you are not locked in the moment you click book. That flexibility makes saying yes to your Pemberton RV trip easy.

Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Pemberton is easy to arrange. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see hosts who welcome dogs and cats, then check the listing for any size or breed notes. Once you're on the road, Brendan T. Byrne State Forest has designated pet-friendly campsites where leashed dogs are welcome on more than 25 miles of trails, and Wharton State Forest's Atsion area also allows pets on lead. Pack a six-foot leash, current vaccination records, and tick prevention since the Pine Barrens has plenty of ticks in spring and summer. Your pup will love the sandy trails around Pakim Pond.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/brendan-t-byrne-state-forest/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite near Pemberton?
Yes, RV delivery in Pemberton is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-timers. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to your site at Brendan T. Byrne State Forest, Timberlane Campground in Clarksboro, or Wharton State Forest, then set up the leveling, hookups, slide-outs, and awning before walking you through every system. You skip the stress of driving a big rig on the New Jersey Turnpike and start your vacation the moment they hand you the keys. Message the host directly from the listing to confirm delivery distance and fees, which are typically based on mileage from their home base.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/wharton-state-forest/How far can I drive from Pemberton on an RV road trip?

Always confirm the mileage policy on the listing before booking.
visitnj.org/things-to-do/road-tripsWhere are the best campgrounds near Pemberton, NJ?
You're spoiled for choice for RV camping in Pemberton. Brendan T. Byrne State Forest, just 10 minutes from town, offers 82 wooded sites with flush toilets, hot showers, and access to Pakim Pond and the Batona Trail. Timberlane Campground in Clarksboro and Philadelphia South/Clarksboro KOA Holiday offer full hookups about 45 minutes west. For a beachy weekend, Bass River State Forest is 30 minutes east. Book Brendan Byrne and Bass River through camping.nj.gov up to a year ahead, especially for summer weekends.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/brendan-t-byrne-state-forest/When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Pemberton?
Pemberton genuinely shines from late April through October, with a sweet spot in May, June, September, and early October when daytime highs sit in the 65 to 80 F range and the Pine Barrens cool nicely at night. July and August bring heat and humidity in the mid-80s to low 90s, plus the famous Whitesbog Blueberry Festival weekends. Fall is magical in the Pinelands with crimson cranberry bogs and crisp hiking weather. Winter rentals are possible too, with daytime highs in the 30s to 40s, and some hosts offer winterized RVs with heated tanks for hardy travelers chasing quiet solitude.
weather.gov/phi/I've never driven an RV before, how do I feel confident driving one out of Pemberton?
First time renting an RV? You're in good hands. Every RVezy host gives you an in-person walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, leveling, water, propane, generator, and dumping, and you can text them anytime during your trip. Pemberton itself is ideal for beginners because most roads (Route 530, Route 70, Route 206) are flat, straight, and lightly trafficked compared to North Jersey. Avoid the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels (LP gas is prohibited) and skip the Garden State Parkway with rigs over 62 feet combined. Pro tip: book a campervan or smaller Class C for your first trip and ask your host to demo backing into a site.
nj.gov/mvc/license/What happens if I break down during my Pemberton RV trip?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking in Pemberton includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 72, a dead battery at Atsion Lake, or a tow from deep in Wharton State Forest is one call away. Your host is also typically reachable by phone or message and knows the quirks of their own rig better than anyone. Save both numbers in your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate. Most issues are minor and resolved within a couple of hours, so the trip rolls on.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Pemberton RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most rentals, and you can easily do an RV road trip from Pemberton to Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New York, or even up to Vermont and Maine. Cross-border travel into Canada may be permitted depending on the host and insurance coverage, so confirm in writing through RVezy messaging before booking and bring your passport. Travel to Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because insurance does not extend there. Popular multi-state routes from Pemberton include Philadelphia to Lancaster Amish Country (90 minutes), the Outer Banks (six hours south), and the Adirondacks (six hours north). Confirm mileage allowance for longer trips.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Pemberton?
Fuel is easier on the wallet than you'd think. Class B campervan rental in Pemberton averages 16 to 20 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes around 10 to 14 MPG, and large Class A coaches 7 to 10 MPG. New Jersey gas prices typically run $3.10 to $3.50 per gallon, and remember the state still has full-service pumps, so let the attendant fuel you up. A 300-mile round trip to Cape May in a Class C costs roughly $80 to $100 in gas. Pro tip: fill up at Wawa stations on Route 38 or Route 206 before heading into the Pinelands, where stations get sparse.
nj.gov/bpu/about/divisions/energy/How far in advance should I book a campground near Pemberton?
Book early and you'll lock in the best spots. New Jersey state park campgrounds, including Brendan T. Byrne State Forest, Bass River State Forest, and Wharton State Forest, open reservations up to a year in advance through the official camping.nj.gov portal, and summer weekends at Brendan Byrne (just 10 minutes from Pemberton) often fill three to six months out. For Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day, aim for January or February. Private parks like Timberlane and the Clarksboro KOA also take direct bookings well ahead. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 12 months before your target arrival date and pounce.
camping.nj.gov/What are driving conditions like around Pemberton?
Pemberton is one of the more RV-friendly corners of New Jersey. The town sits in flat, sandy Pine Barrens terrain with easy two-lane state highways like Route 530, Route 38, and Route 70 leading to most destinations. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk (the Pinelands are full of them), occasional sandy shoulders, and low-clearance railroad bridges in older towns; the Pemberton Rail Trail crossings are well marked. Avoid the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels and the lower level of the George Washington Bridge with any propane-equipped RV. Summer thunderstorms can pop up quickly, so pull over at a Wawa or rest area and wait 20 minutes for cells to pass.
state.nj.us/transportation/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Pemberton?
Local campgrounds cover the full range. Brendan T. Byrne State Forest offers fire rings, picnic tables, flush toilets, hot showers, and potable water hydrants, though sites are non-electric, so plan to use your RV's onboard battery or generator. Timberlane Campground and Philadelphia South/Clarksboro KOA both have full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. For dumping and freshwater fills between trips, there's a dump station at Brendan T. Byrne and at most KOA locations. Pro tip: cell signal can be spotty deep in the Pine Barrens, so download offline maps and let folks know your itinerary before you lose bars near Pakim Pond.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/camping/What's included inside a typical RV rental in Pemberton?
You'll feel right at home. Most motorhome rentals in Pemberton come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, bunks or convertible dinettes, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a generator for boondocking at Brendan T. Byrne State Forest where there are no hookups. Wi-Fi varies, so ask the host or plan to use your phone hotspot. Check the listing's inclusions list, and message the host to confirm kitchen kits, linens, and outdoor chairs are part of your booking.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/brendan-t-byrne-state-forest/What add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in Pemberton make customizing easy. Common add-ons include kitchen and linen kits ($30 to $75), generator use, propane refills, bike racks, outdoor grills, camping chairs, and pet cleaning fees. Pickup is typically at the host's home or driveway, often within 10 to 20 minutes of downtown Pemberton, and you'll do a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough. Standard mileage allowance is 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extras around $0.35 to $0.50 each; some listings offer unlimited mileage packages, ideal for a longer Pemberton RV trip down the Eastern Shore. Confirm pickup and return times in writing to avoid late fees, and ask about early pickup if you want a head start on Friday traffic.
state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/How does payment and the security deposit work for a Pemberton RV rental?
Payment is straightforward and secure. You pay through RVezy at booking using a credit or debit card, and the total (rental, fees, taxes, protection plan) is clearly itemized before you confirm. Each listing displays the security deposit amount upfront, which is placed as a hold (not a charge) on your payment method a few days before pickup, separate from your booking payment. Return the RV in the same clean condition with the same fuel and propane levels and within your mileage allowance, and the hold is released. To avoid surprises, photograph the RV's interior and exterior at pickup and again at return, and dump the tanks before drop-off if your listing requires it.
