Camping near Rumson, New Jersey
Rumson sits on a peninsula between the Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers in Monmouth County, minutes from the Jersey Shore beaches and the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. The town itself is residential, so RV travelers typically base out of nearby state parks, county parks, and metro-area RV parks that put both the coast and New York City within reach.
The closest developed camping options include Floyd Bennett Field, part of Gateway National Recreation Area in Brooklyn, and Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City for travelers who want NYC access. Inland Monmouth County offers Allaire State Park in Farmingdale, Turkey Swamp Park near Freehold, and private options such as Pine Cone Campgrounds.
Expect a mix of federal, state, county, and private sites within roughly a one-hour drive of Rumson. Reservation systems, seasons, and RV site availability vary by operator, so trip planning should start with the specific park rather than the region.
Things to do near Rumson
The Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area is the headline outdoor destination, with ocean beaches, bay-side paddling, historic Fort Hancock, and multi-use trails along the barrier peninsula. The Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers support kayaking, fishing, and boating, and the beach towns of Sea Bright, Long Branch, and Asbury Park are a short drive south.
Inland, Allaire State Park is renowned for its historic 19th-century ironworks village and the Pine Creek Railroad, along with Manasquan River fishing and marked hiking trails. Turkey Swamp Park offers a 17-acre lake for boating and fishing, 8 miles of trails, open playfields, and an archery range.
From Liberty Harbor RV Park, PATH trains and ferries provide direct access to Lower Manhattan, making a day in the city feasible without moving the rig.

Summer is peak season along the Jersey Shore. Beaches, state parks, and private campgrounds run at capacity on weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and holiday weekends fill months out. Campsites, and especially shelters, book up fast for summer and holiday weekends, so booking at least three months in advance is wise.
Spring and fall are the practical shoulder seasons. Allaire State Park campsites are open from April 1 through December 15, and Turkey Swamp Park campgrounds are open April 1 through November 15. Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field runs a shorter warm-season schedule. Late September and October bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and reliable beach access.
Winter tightens the options. Many seasonal parks close, mosquitoes disappear, and shore weather turns raw and windy. Liberty Harbor RV Park operates year-round, but hookups and services at seasonal parks are reduced or unavailable. Note that Allaire's family campsites are currently closed for construction of a new bathroom and shower facility, though group camping remains open in season.

How to book near Rumson
New Jersey state park sites, including Allaire State Park, are booked through the state's online system at camping.nj.gov. Online reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance, which matters for summer weekends.
Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field is a National Park Service campground and is reserved through Recreation.gov, with a standard booking window of up to six months in advance. Turkey Swamp Park is operated by the Monmouth County Park System, with reservations accepted after January 1 for that year. Liberty Harbor RV Park and private campgrounds such as Pine Cone Campgrounds are booked directly with the operator by phone or website.
For a Rumson-area trip that combines shore days and a New York City day, mixing one shore-side or inland campground with a night or two at Liberty Harbor is a common pattern.
What to expect near Rumson
Site character varies widely across the area. Allaire State Park offers wooded tent and trailer sites with fire rings, picnic tables, flush toilets, and showers, plus a trailer sanitary station open April 15 through October 15. Big rigs should favor the open sites, as some interior loops are narrow and tree-lined.
Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field is an urban NPS campground on a former airfield with tent and RV camping without hookups, though a dump station is available for RVs. Turkey Swamp Park's 64 pull-through campsites have water and electric hookups. Liberty Harbor RV Park is essentially a paved marina lot with tight maneuvering for larger rigs.
Black bears are present in New Jersey parks, so follow park bear-safety protocols. Mosquitoes and biting flies are common near the coast and marshes from July into October.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Rumson, NJ
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Rumson?
RV rental in Rumson is reasonably priced for the Jersey Shore. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers from about $90 to $180 per night, Class C motorhomes from $175 to $295, and larger Class A motorhomes at the higher end. Because hosts set their own pricing, booking midweek or in the shoulder months of May, September, or October often saves 15 to 25 percent compared to peak summer Shore rates. For a cheap RV rental Rumson trip, filter by travel trailers and look for hosts who include generators or camp chairs in the base price. Lock in Memorial Day or July 4th rentals by early March, when Shore weekends book quickly.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rumson%2C%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Rumson?
Good news: a standard Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Rumson, no Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement required. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) classifies recreational vehicles used for personal travel as exempt from CDL rules, even for larger Class A motorhomes. You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and identity verification happens right inside the platform when you reserve. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club, usually under $20, and you're set to roll down the Garden State Parkway.
nj.gov/mvc/vehicles/motorhomes.htmWhat kind of protection is included with my RVezy booking?
Every RV rental in Rumson comes with a built-in renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the vehicle during your trip and includes liability coverage. During checkout, you choose from several protection tiers based on how much coverage and how low a deductible you want, so the decision stays in your hands, not the host's. First time renting an RV? Most Rumson guests pick a mid-tier plan for added comfort on the Shore drive, knowing they're backed up if something minor happens during the trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Rumson RV rental?
You can book your Rumson RV trip with confidence: RVezy sets the cancellation policy platform-wide, not individual hosts, so the rules are the same on every listing. The refund amount depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. If a nor'easter or tropical storm is forecast along the Jersey Shore during hurricane season, message your host and reach out to RVezy support early so they can help coordinate. Booking sooner is low risk, and the best Shore-area RVs go fast, especially for summer weekends.

Sandy Hook's beaches are dog-friendly off-season (mid-September through mid-March), and nearby Hartshorne Woods Park in Middletown is leash-friendly year-round. Pro tip: ask your host for a fitted seat cover or crate, many Rumson hosts keep one on hand for traveling pups.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/cheesequake-state-park/Can the RV be delivered to me in Rumson?
Yes, RV delivery Rumson is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who'd rather skip driving through Monmouth County traffic. Many hosts will deliver the RV straight to your driveway or your campsite at Cheesequake or Allaire State Park, then set up the awning, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Use the Delivery filter when you search to see hosts offering this service, along with their per-mile delivery rate. A delivered campervan rental Rumson is perfect for a Sandy Hook beach week, the host handles transport so you never tow a thing.

You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Rumson. Cheesequake State Park in Matawan, about 25 minutes west, offers 53 campsites with flush toilets, showers, and a dump station (note an 11-foot RV height limit due to a low bridge on the access road). Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold has wooded sites with electric hookups. Allaire State Park in Wall Township offers another nearby state park option. For a Manhattan-skyline escape, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City has full hookups and a ferry to NYC. State park sites at camping.nj.gov open for reservations months in advance and fill quickly for summer weekends.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/cheesequake-state-park/When is the best time to rent an RV in Rumson?
Rumson is a four-season town, but the sweet spot for RV camping Rumson runs from late April through mid-October. June and September are the locals' favorite: daytime highs of 75 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit, ocean water warm enough to swim, and far fewer crowds than peak July and August (which can hit 90 degrees with humidity). Fall foliage peaks around mid-to-late October with crisp 60-degree days, perfect for Hartshorne Woods hikes. Winter rentals are possible but limited, most area campgrounds close November 1. Pro tip: book a shoulder-season Rumson RV trip in early September for warm ocean swims at Sandy Hook minus the summer-weekend Parkway traffic.
weather.gov/phi/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, and you won't be alone figuring it out. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup (or at delivery), walking you through driving tips, leveling, awnings, propane, the bathroom, the generator, and dumping tanks. You can also message your host with questions before you ever book. For first time renting an RV around Rumson, choose a Class B campervan or a smaller Class C, both handle the borough's tree-lined streets and the Garden State Parkway easily. Pro tip: do a quick practice loop through the wide parking lot at the Monmouth County Park System's Thompson Park in Lincroft before heading to the shore, it's a stress-free warm-up.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rv-safetyWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering tows, jump starts, flat tires, lockouts, and fluid delivery. If you have a flat on the Garden State Parkway or a mechanical issue near Sandy Hook, one phone call gets help dispatched. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after every trip if you need to coordinate with the host. Save the roadside number in your phone before pickup and snap photos of your RV's tire pressure and propane levels during your walkthrough, it makes any call faster and easier.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008834-Roadside-assistance-coverageWhat are the best RV road trips from Rumson?
An RV road trip from Rumson opens up the entire Mid-Atlantic. Head 20 minutes north to Sandy Hook for ocean dunes and the historic lighthouse, or about 2.5 hours south to Cape May for Victorian charm and the Cape May-Lewes Ferry into Delaware. Drive about 2 hours west into the Delaware Water Gap for waterfalls and miles of trails, or 2.5 hours northwest to the Pocono Mountains for lake camping. For a longer adventure, push about 5 hours north to Lake George in the Adirondacks. Crossing into Canada is possible on many listings with host approval and proper documentation, but Mexico travel is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Time the Cape May leg with the May or September Birding Festival for a memorable stop.
nps.gov/dewa/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Rumson RV trip?
Fuel planning is straightforward once you know your rig. Class B campervans typically get 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 MPG, and Class A coaches run 7 to 10 MPG. New Jersey is the only U.S. state where attendants pump your gas, self-serve is not permitted. For a weekend Sandy Hook to Pine Barrens loop of around 200 miles in a Class C, plan on roughly $70 to $100 in fuel at current prices. Fuel up in central New Jersey before heading into New York or Pennsylvania, where prices and taxes are typically higher per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Rumson?
For summer weekends along the Jersey Shore, book your campground the moment reservations open. New Jersey state parks like Cheesequake and Allaire use camping.nj.gov and open bookings well in advance, and prime July and August weekends often fill within hours. National park sites bookable through Recreation.gov typically open six months ahead. For shoulder-season trips in May, September, or October, two to four weeks lead time is usually enough. Set a calendar reminder for camping.nj.gov reservation drops at 7 a.m. Eastern, that's when most Rumson locals secure holiday weekends at Cheesequake.
camping.nj.gov/What are driving conditions like around Rumson?
Driving an RV around Rumson is very manageable as long as you know two things: New Jersey is a full-service fuel state (an attendant pumps your gas), and the Garden State Parkway has height-restricted commuter overpasses on its inner car-only lanes, so always stay in the truck/RV lanes marked on signage. Local roads like River Road and Rumson Road are tree-lined and narrow in spots, so a Class B campervan or compact Class C is the easiest pick. Watch for the 11-foot bridge clearance into Cheesequake State Park's campground. Pro tip: avoid the Parkway northbound on Sunday evenings in summer when shore traffic peaks, leave early morning instead.
state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/roads/parkway/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Rumson?
Local campgrounds offer a solid mix of services. Cheesequake State Park has flush toilets, hot showers, a trailer sanitary dump station, and potable water, though individual sites do not have electric, water, or sewer hookups. Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold offers electric hookups and a dump station. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is the closest full-hookup option with electric, water, sewer, and Wi-Fi. Most New Jersey state parks include dump station access for registered campers. Top off your fresh water tank before heading into Cheesequake and bring a 25-foot extension cord, sites that share an electric pedestal are a few steps farther apart than you'd expect.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/cheesequake-state-park/What's inside a typical RV rental in Rumson?
Expect more comfort than you'd think. A typical motorhome rental Rumson on RVezy includes a real bed (or two), a kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, dining seating with seatbelts for travel, climate control, and a house battery. Most Class C and Class A rigs also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, awning, and onboard generator. Many hosts add Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor camp chairs, and beach gear, ideal for Sandy Hook days. Filter by Sleeps 6+ if you're planning a family RV trip Rumson, and message the host to confirm which beds are queens versus convertible dinettes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rumson%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Rumson get creative with add-ons that level up your trip. Common extras include linen and towel packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, generator hours, bike racks, kayak mounts, propane refills, and pre-stocked firewood. Many hosts also offer beach chairs, umbrellas, and even surfboards, fitting for a Jersey Shore RV trip. Pickup is usually scheduled in a one-hour window at the host's home or a meeting point, with a 60 to 90 minute walkthrough. Drop-off mirrors pickup, with empty tanks and a refueled vehicle expected. Ask about Instant Book listings if your dates are tight, and confirm mileage allowance and late-return fees during the chat.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039184314-Add-ons-and-extrasHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your Rumson RV rental, RVezy charges your card right in the platform, no cash and no payments directly to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (amount varies by host and the protection plan you choose), and it's released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape with tanks emptied and fuel topped off. Keep the deposit fully refundable by taking photos at pickup and dropoff, returning on time, and following the host's checklist. Choosing a higher-tier protection plan at checkout can lower your out-of-pocket risk if anything happens during the trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I park an RV overnight in Rumson itself?
Rumson is a small, walkable residential borough, so where to park an RV in Rumson requires a little planning. Overnight street parking of recreational vehicles is restricted in the borough, but you can keep your RV in a private driveway during your rental, which makes delivery setups easy. For overnight stays nearby, head to Sandy Hook, Cheesequake State Park, or Turkey Swamp Park, all within roughly a 30-minute drive. If you want to spend daytime at Rumson's Victory Park or Riverside Avenue restaurants, drop the RV at your campsite first and rideshare back into town for the evening.
