Campgrounds near Sweetwater, New Jersey
Sweetwater sits inside the Pine Barrens along the Mullica River, surrounded by Wharton State Forest, the largest state forest in New Jersey, encompassing about 122,880 acres of Pinelands. That location puts RV travelers within a short drive of state-run campsites, private RV resorts, and a municipal lake campground, all within roughly 15 miles of town.
The closest options are Wharton State Forest - Buttonwood Hill and Wharton State Forest - Hawkins Bridge, both primitive sites managed by the New Jersey State Park Service. For hookups and family amenities, Holly Acres Campground and Wading Pines Camping Resort sit along the Mullica and Wading Rivers, while Egg Harbor City Lake and Campground offers a smaller municipal lakefront setup just south of town.
Sweetwater works well as a base for paddling the tea-colored Pinelands rivers, day trips to historic Batsto Village, and beach or boardwalk runs to the Jersey Shore. The area sits in southern New Jersey, roughly between Philadelphia and Atlantic City.
Things to do near Sweetwater
Paddling is the signature activity. The Mullica, Batsto, and Wading Rivers thread through the forest with rentals and shuttles available from local liveries, and several primitive sites along the Wading River are reached from launch points near Wharton State Forest - Hawkins Bridge.
On land, Wharton includes a major stretch of the roughly 50-mile Batona Trail, plus miles of unpaved sand roads open for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Families based at Holly Acres Campground or Wading Pines Camping Resort typically split time between on-site pools and playgrounds and day trips to Batsto Village, the Atlantic City boardwalk, or the beaches at Brigantine and Long Beach Island. Egg Harbor City Lake and Campground offers swimming and shore fishing close to town.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV travelers who want cooler nights and thinner crowds. Wildflowers and Pine Barrens tree frogs are active in May, and October brings drier air, oak color, and manageable daytime temperatures. Fire restrictions can appear during dry spells in spring and fall; check the New Jersey Forest Fire Service before arrival.
Winter is quiet. Egg Harbor City Lake and Campground and most private resorts close for the season, while the primitive Wharton campgrounds including Buttonwood Hill and Hawkins Bridge are typically open from April through October.

How to book campgrounds near Sweetwater
State-run sites at Wharton State Forest - Buttonwood Hill and Wharton State Forest - Hawkins Bridge are reserved through the New Jersey State Park Service. Online reservations can be made at camping.nj.gov, and reservations can typically be made up to 11 months in advance. Popular waterfront sites tend to fill quickly during summer, and the reservation process requires selecting specific site numbers, so it helps to research site locations beforehand.
Private resorts including Holly Acres Campground and Wading Pines Camping Resort take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, often with two- or three-night minimums on summer weekends and holidays. Egg Harbor City Lake and Campground is booked through the city and typically operates seasonally.
Confirm RV length limits before booking. Some Wharton sites cap trailers at shorter lengths, and sand access roads can be tight for larger rigs.
What to expect
Terrain around Sweetwater is flat, sandy, and heavily wooded with pitch pine and oak. The sandy ground levels easily for setup, though flooding can occur after heavy rains. Cell service is limited inside the forest, and dirt access roads can be rough after storms.
State-forest sites at Wharton State Forest - Buttonwood Hill and Wharton State Forest - Hawkins Bridge are primitive: Buttonwood Hill has 5 primitive tent and trailer sites with fire rings and pit toilets, and Hawkins Bridge offers similar basic facilities along the Wading River. Private parks like Holly Acres Campground and Wading Pines Camping Resort provide full hookups, showers, laundry, pools, and camp stores.
Ticks are active spring through fall, firewood can be purchased at either park office and may not be brought in from outside sources, and quiet hours are enforced at most parks.

Travel trailers typically run $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $325, and luxury Class A rigs can climb to $400 or more. Pro tip: filter for Instant Book listings and message the host about weekly pricing before you confirm. You will find more value here than renting near Philly or NYC.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sweetwater%2C%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Sweetwater, NJ?
Great news for first-timers: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Sweetwater. New Jersey does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) for personal motorhomes or travel trailers under standard weight limits, so Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and most travel trailers are fully drivable on a standard license. You must be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and you will confirm your ID through the platform during checkout, which usually takes just a few minutes. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home-country license. Once that is done, you are cleared to roll out to Batsto Village and beyond.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental in Sweetwater, NJ covered by protection and roadside assistance?
Yes, and that is one of the best reasons to book through RVezy. Every RV rental in Sweetwater comes with an RVezy renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance included with your booking, so a flat tire on Route 542 or a dead battery at Atsion Lake will not derail your trip. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle, giving you real peace of mind, especially if it is your first time renting an RV. During checkout you will choose from different RVezy protection levels so you can match coverage to your comfort level. Book confidently and enjoy the Pine Barrens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's the cancellation policy if my Sweetwater RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy applies a clear cancellation policy to every reservation, including a full money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your Sweetwater RV trip without second-guessing. If a nor'easter rolls into South Jersey or life simply happens, your refund eligibility depends on how far out your trip is and the circumstances. Cancellations are handled by RVezy directly rather than the individual host, which keeps everything fair and consistent. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds you or provides travel credits. Pro tip: book early to claim the best Wharton State Forest dates, knowing the grace period has your back if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Sweetwater, NJ?
Absolutely, plenty of tail-wagging adventures await. A pet-friendly RV rental in Sweetwater is easy to find: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you will see listings from hosts who welcome dogs. Atsion Family Campground inside Wharton State Forest allows leashed pets at campsites (though not on the swimming beach), and the sandy fire roads of the Pine Barrens are paradise for hiking dogs. Wading Pines Camping Resort just up the road is also dog-friendly. Pro tip: message the host before booking about any breed or size preferences, and pack a tie-out, collapsible bowl, and tick prevention because Pinelands ticks are active April through October.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/wharton-state-forest/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in Sweetwater?
Yes, RV delivery in Sweetwater is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters. Many hosts will drive the motorhome or travel trailer directly to Atsion Family Campground, Wading Pines, Bellhaven Lake, or a private driveway, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means zero towing stress and zero learning curve on your first day. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer this service, and confirm the delivery fee, which is typically based on mileage from the host's location. It is the easiest way to enjoy RV camping in Sweetwater without sitting behind a big wheel.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sweetwater%2C%20New%20JerseyHow far can I drive from Sweetwater, NJ on an RV trip?

Atlantic City beaches sit about 25 miles southeast (around 40 minutes), Cape May is roughly 60 miles south (about 90 minutes), Philadelphia is 45 miles west (just over an hour), and Long Beach Island is around 35 miles east. Want something bigger? New York City is about 110 miles north, and the Pocono Mountains are around 130 miles northwest, both doable weekend runs. Many hosts offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some advertise RV rental with unlimited mileage. Confirm the mileage policy on the listing page before you book to keep your budget tight.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sweetwater%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat are the best campgrounds near Sweetwater, NJ?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Sweetwater are clustered right around Wharton State Forest. Atsion Family Campground on Atsion Lake offers around 50 family sites with flush toilets, hot showers, and a sanitary dump station, and is the top RV-friendly state-run option. Wading Pines Camping Resort in nearby Chatsworth offers full hookups, a pool, and riverfront sites. Bellhaven Lake Resort on Route 542 has hundreds of sites with 30/50-amp electric, sewer, and a general store. For a more rustic feel, Bodine Field and Godfrey Bridge campgrounds line the Wading River. Pro tip: most state-run sites suit RVs up to around 20 to 22 feet, so larger rigs do best at Wading Pines or Bellhaven.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/wharton-state-forest/When is the best time to rent an RV in Sweetwater, NJ?
Late spring and early fall are pure magic in the Pine Barrens. The sweet spot for RV camping in Sweetwater is mid-May through mid-June and again from early September through late October, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 65 to 78F range and evenings cool to the 50s. July and August bring 85 to 92F heat and humidity (great for swimming at Atsion Lake) but campgrounds book fast. Winter from December through February drops into the 25 to 45F range, with quieter trails and gorgeous low light, though many state campgrounds close. Pro tip: October weekends near the cranberry harvest at Whitesbog are a bucket-list experience for any motorhome rental traveler.
weather.gov/phi/I've never rented an RV before. Is Sweetwater a good place to start?
It is actually one of the best places to try it. If it is your first time renting an RV, Sweetwater's flat terrain, low traffic, and short driving distances to campgrounds (most under 15 minutes) make it incredibly forgiving. Your RVezy host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering the generator, slide-outs, propane, holding tanks, and leveling, and they are a text away the whole trip. If you would rather skip driving entirely, choose a host who delivers. Pro tip: book a smaller Class C around 21 feet or a campervan for your first trip, since they handle like a large van and fit easily into Atsion Family Campground's tighter loops.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sweetwater%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road near Sweetwater?
You are never on your own. Every RV rental in Sweetwater includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the RVezy protection plan, so a tire blowout on the Atlantic City Expressway, a dead battery at Batsto Village, or a lockout at Wading Pines is one phone call away from being solved. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip. Your host is your second line of help, especially for quirks specific to their rig, and most respond within minutes. Pro tip: snap a quick photo of the dashboard warning light symbols at pickup and save the roadside number to your phone's favorites before you leave.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Sweetwater RV rental to other states or across the Canadian border?
Yes to interstate travel, with a quick conversation first. Most hosts gladly allow an RV road trip from Sweetwater into Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New York, and beyond, so routes like Sweetwater to the Outer Banks (around 350 miles), Sweetwater to Acadia (around 550 miles), or Sweetwater to Niagara Falls (around 400 miles) are absolutely on the table. Travel to Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because insurance does not extend there. Travel to Canada may be allowed depending on the host and protection level, so message the host directly from the listing and confirm before booking. Pro tip: ask early because some hosts cap mileage for very long trips or want documentation of your route.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost for an RV trip from Sweetwater?
Easier on the wallet than you might think. Sweetwater sits near plenty of stations along Route 30, Route 206, and the Atlantic City Expressway. A Class C motorhome averages 8 to 10 MPG, a Class B campervan 15 to 20 MPG, and a travel trailer towed by a half-ton truck around 10 to 12 MPG. For a typical 4-night, 300-mile loop through the Pine Barrens and down to Cape May, budget roughly $90 to $160 for fuel depending on current pump prices. Pro tip: fill up at the Hammonton or Egg Harbor City Wawa before heading deep into Wharton, since gas stations get sparse once you turn onto the sand roads.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Sweetwater?
Earlier is better, but you have options. New Jersey state campgrounds in Wharton State Forest, including Atsion, book through the official NJ State Parks reservation system at njportal.com, and summer weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day often fill 2 to 3 months out. Fall and spring weekends usually open up 2 to 4 weeks ahead. Private parks like Wading Pines and Bellhaven Lake Resort take direct reservations and tend to have more last-minute availability. Pro tip: if you strike out at Atsion, check midweek dates or contact the park office directly, since cancellations open up daily, especially within 7 days of the arrival date.
njportal.com/DEP/NJOutdoors/What are driving conditions like around Sweetwater, NJ?
Refreshingly mellow. Sweetwater sits on the quiet eastern edge of Wharton State Forest, where Route 542, Route 563, and Pleasant Mills Road are flat, two-lane country roads with light traffic and no mountain grades, making them ideal for first-time RV drivers. The only things to watch for are sandy shoulders, low-hanging pine branches on a few side roads, and the occasional deer at dawn and dusk. Avoid the unpaved sand roads inside Wharton State Forest itself, since rigs can get stuck quickly. Pro tip: the Garden State Parkway and Atlantic City Expressway both have generous lanes and 65 MPH limits, so cruising your motorhome rental to the Shore is a stress-free ride.
state.nj.us/transportation/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Sweetwater?
More than enough to camp comfortably. Private parks near Sweetwater like Wading Pines and Bellhaven Lake Resort offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, camp stores, pools, and dump stations. State-run Atsion Family Campground keeps it simpler, with potable water, flush toilets, hot showers, and an on-site sanitary dump station, but no individual hookups at the sites. To fill fresh water and dump tanks between trips, the Atsion sanitary station is your closest public option. Pro tip: the Hammonton Wawa and Hammonton ShopRite are about 15 minutes away and stock everything you forgot, from sewer hose adapters to s'mores fixings, so you can knock out restock runs in under an hour.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/wharton-state-forest/What features will my RV rental from Sweetwater have inside?
Pretty much everything you need for a comfortable trip. Most RVs available for a campervan or motorhome rental in Sweetwater come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunk beds (great for a family RV trip), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink and cookware, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, propane heat, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a generator, TV, outdoor speakers, awning, and even outdoor kitchens on larger rigs. Wi-Fi varies, so confirm in the listing if you need to work remotely. Pro tip: filter listings by Sleeps count and look for hosts who list linens, kitchen kits, and camp chairs as included so you can pack lighter.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sweetwater%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Sweetwater RV rental?
Lots of ways to customize. Popular add-ons for an RV rental in Sweetwater include delivery and setup (often a per-mile fee from the host), generator hours, bike racks, kayak or canoe carriers (perfect for the Mullica and Wading Rivers), linen and kitchen kits, portable grills, propane fire pits, and pet cleaning fees. Pickup and dropoff are typically at the host's location in or near Sweetwater, Hammonton, or Egg Harbor City, but many hosts will deliver to your campground for a flat fee. Mileage policies usually offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles charged per mile. Pro tip: ask the host to throw in a starter propane tank fill, since it saves you a stop on day one.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sweetwater%2C%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Sweetwater?
Simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Sweetwater through RVezy, payment is processed safely through the platform, never directly to the host, which protects you end-to-end. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and released after the RV is returned in the same condition you received it. Deposit amounts typically range from $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig. To avoid issues, do a thorough video walkaround with your host at pickup and dropoff, capture every existing scratch or scuff, and keep the tanks, fuel, and propane at the levels specified in the listing. Pro tip: leave 30 minutes at dropoff so you and the host can inspect together stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs RV rental in Sweetwater, NJ available in winter and how do I prep for cold weather?
Yes, winter RV trips around Sweetwater are a quiet, beautiful secret. While Atsion Family Campground closes for the off-season, private parks like Wading Pines stay open year-round, and the Pine Barrens trails are gorgeous under a dusting of snow. South Jersey winters are milder than you would expect, with January highs around 42F and lows around 25F, but pipes can still freeze. Choose a four-season or winterized RV (ask the host directly), look for heated holding tanks, and book a site with 30/50-amp shore power so you can run the furnace continuously. Pro tip: pack a small space heater for backup, an insulated sewer hose, and RV antifreeze for the gray tank, and you will be cozy all weekend.
