Camping near Beacon, New York
Beacon sits on the east bank of the Hudson River in Dutchess County, roughly 60 miles north of New York City. The area serves as a practical base for RV travelers exploring the Hudson Highlands, with Mount Beacon, the Dia Beacon art museum, and Metro-North rail access to the city all within reach. Campgrounds cluster in the surrounding hills and lake country rather than in the city itself.
To the south and west, Clarence Fahnestock State Park and Harriman State Park sit within the Lower Hudson Valley, offering state-run campgrounds including Pelton Pond and Beaver Pond. Private options add hookups and family amenities: the New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday lies just across the river, while Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River provide lake access and resort-style features in Dutchess County.
Most RV travelers use Beacon as a launch point for day trips into the Highlands, wineries in the mid-Hudson corridor, and hiking trails on both sides of the river.
Things to do around Beacon
Hiking dominates the outdoor menu. Mount Beacon offers a steep climb to fire-tower views of the Hudson, and the Breakneck Ridge trail sits just north in Hudson Highlands State Park. Fahnestock has quieter, family-friendly loops around Pelton Pond and Canopus Lake, and Harriman State Park has more than 200 miles of trails plus access to swimming beaches at Lake Welch and Lake Tiorati.
On the water, Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc and the lakes inside Fahnestock and Harriman support swimming, paddling, and fishing. Camper Boat Permits are valid on Lake Welch for registered campers at Beaver Pond and are good for the duration of the camping permit.
In town, Beacon's Main Street has restaurants, galleries, and Dia Beacon. Kids-focused amenities at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River round out rainy-day options.

The main camping window in the Hudson Valley runs from mid-spring through late fall. Spring and summer are the busiest seasons and the best times for paddling and swimming, with weekends filling early at state-run campgrounds. Fall brings foliage traffic through October, especially on Columbus Day weekend, when Highland trailheads and campgrounds see heavy use.
State park campgrounds in the region are seasonal. Beaver Pond typically opens in mid-April for walk-in camping, with the regular reservation season running from early May through mid-October. Seasonal Boat Permits for the Palisades Region are valid from April 1 to November 30, which aligns with the active camping calendar at Beaver Pond. Pelton Pond at Fahnestock generally runs from mid-May into early November.
Winter camping options near Beacon are limited. Private parks like the KOA and Jellystone may operate on reduced schedules, and most state campgrounds are closed. Travelers should confirm operating dates directly with each campground before booking, since opening and closing weeks shift year to year.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book
New York state park campgrounds, including Beaver Pond and Pelton Pond at Fahnestock, book through Reserve America up to nine months in advance. From mid-May to early October, same-day reservations at Beaver Pond are permitted only until 3 p.m., and no walk-ins are allowed at that campground. Reservations can be made online or by phone at 1-800-456-2267. Peak-summer weekends and holiday windows should be booked as far in advance as the system allows.
Private campgrounds run their own reservation systems. The New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday, Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River accept bookings directly through their websites or by phone, and typically require deposits for peak-season stays.
What to expect on the ground
State park sites in the area are rustic. Beaver Pond offers campsites, some with a raised platform, for up to two tents and six persons per site, and select sites can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 ft. long, with picnic table, fire ring with flip-top grill, and shared full-service bathrooms centrally located. There are no electrical hookups at Beaver Pond, alcohol is not permitted, and no pets are allowed. A dump station is available on site. Pelton Pond at Fahnestock is similarly tent-oriented, though it accepts longer RVs at select sites, so larger rigs should verify site length.
Private parks offer the amenities RV travelers usually want: full hookups, dump stations, Wi-Fi, pools, and playgrounds. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Beacon and the river corridor but drops in the interior of Harriman and Fahnestock. Black bears are present in the Highlands, so proper food storage and disposal are essential.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Beacon, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Beacon, NY?
Renting an RV in Beacon, NY is more affordable than you might think for the Hudson Valley. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $295 per night, and luxury Class A rigs can hit $350+ during peak fall foliage season. Because Beacon hosts list their personal vehicles on RVezy, you'll often find cheap RV rental Beacon options 20 to 40 percent below traditional rental fleets. Pro tip: book a midweek trip in late September or early October to catch peak leaf-peeping at lower nightly rates, and watch for hosts offering weekly discounts on stays of 5 nights or more.
dutchesstourism.com/things-to-do/outdoors-adventure/campingDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Beacon, NY?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Beacon, NY. New York State does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RVs, motorhomes, or travel trailers used recreationally. To book on RVezy you need to meet the approved driver requirements (generally 25 or older with a valid license), and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform before your trip begins. Visiting from overseas? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country alongside your home license. Most first-time renters are surprised how straightforward the paperwork is, leaving you free to focus on Breakneck Ridge views instead of red tape.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside assistance come with my Beacon RV rental?
Every RV rental in Beacon booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head into the Hudson Highlands with confidence. You choose your protection tier during checkout (not the host), and each tier sets the level of coverage for damage to the RV during your trip. If you get a flat on Route 9D heading toward Cold Spring or your battery dies at Long Dock Park, one call to RVezy roadside assistance dispatches help. Pick the tier that matches your comfort level and hit the road relaxed knowing support is just a phone call away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Beacon RV rental?
Booking is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy on every reservation (hosts do not set this themselves), and the specific policy that applies to your trip is shown to you during checkout and again in your booking confirmation. Your refund amount depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date. If a host has to cancel on you, RVezy helps you secure a refund or rebooking credit. Pro tip: book early to lock in your preferred RV for foliage season (mid-October weekends sell out fast in Beacon), and review the cancellation terms before you confirm so you know exactly what flexibility you have.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Beacon, NY?
Absolutely, Beacon is one of the most dog-loving towns in the Hudson Valley, and plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Beacon options. Just flip the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see eligible listings instantly. Once you arrive, your pup will love Long Dock Park's waterfront trails, the leash-friendly paths at Madam Brett Park, and the dog-welcoming patios along Main Street like Hudson Valley Brewery. Many nearby campgrounds, including Mills Norrie State Park and Clarence Fahnestock State Park, allow leashed dogs on most trails and at campsites. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your dog's size and breed so check-in goes smoothly.
parks.ny.gov/regulations/Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Beacon?
Yes, RV delivery Beacon is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you're nervous about driving a big rig through the winding roads of Route 9D. Many Beacon-area hosts offer delivery and full setup directly to popular spots like Clarence Fahnestock State Park, Mills Norrie State Park, or even a friend's driveway in nearby Cold Spring or Fishkill. Your host will level the RV, connect hookups, walk you through every system, and pick it up at the end. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see hosts who offer this service. Delivery fees typically range from $2 to $5 per mile, often with a flat fee for setup, making a stress-free first-timer experience genuinely attainable.
parks.ny.gov/parks/fahnestock/How far can I drive on my Beacon RV rental, and what are the mileage policies?
You've got real range from Beacon, NY. Hosts set their own mileage policies, and many offer 100 to 150 free miles per night, with some listings featuring RV rental with unlimited mileage perfect for longer Hudson Valley loops. From Beacon, you can easily reach the Catskills (about 50 miles northwest), Lake George (about 145 miles north), the Berkshires in Massachusetts (about 75 miles northeast), Niagara Falls (about 380 miles), or even the Adirondacks (about 200 miles north). Additional miles typically run $0.30 to $0.45 each if you go over. Pro tip: map your route before booking and message the host if you expect a long-haul road trip from Beacon so they can offer a better mileage package upfront.
iloveny.com/places-to-go/catskills/Where can I park or camp my RV near Beacon, NY?
You have great overnight options for RV camping near Beacon, though you cannot park overnight on city streets in Beacon itself without a permit under the City of Beacon code. Head instead to nearby campgrounds: Clarence Fahnestock State Park (about 15 minutes south, electric hookups, seasonal mid-April through late fall), Mills Norrie State Park (about 35 minutes north along the Hudson, electric sites), Newburgh KOA in Plattekill (about 30 minutes west, full hookups), Sylvan Lake Beach Park in Hopewell Junction (about 20 minutes east), and Black Bear Campground in Florida, NY (about 45 minutes southwest, full hookups, open year-round). Pro tip: reserve Fahnestock sites the moment they open online because they go fast for fall foliage weekends.
parks.ny.gov/parks/fahnestock/When is the best time to plan an RV trip from Beacon, NY?
Beacon's sweet spot is May through late October, with two standout windows. Late spring (mid-May to June) brings 65 to 78 degree days, blooming dogwoods, and quieter trails on Mount Beacon. Then comes the legendary Hudson Valley fall foliage from late September through the third week of October, when daytime highs run 55 to 70 degrees and the hillsides explode in red, orange, and gold. July and August are warm (80 to 88 degrees) and perfect for swimming at Canopus Lake. Winter is cold (often 20 to 35 degrees with snow), and most campgrounds close from December through March. Pro tip: book your fall foliage Beacon RV trip at least 8 to 10 weeks ahead because Columbus Day weekend is the single busiest weekend of the year.
weather.gov/okx/I've never driven an RV. Is renting in Beacon really doable for a first-timer?
Yes, first time renting an RV in Beacon is genuinely manageable, and thousands of guests do it every year. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup covering the propane, water systems, slide-outs, leveling, and dump procedures, so you won't be left to Google things in a campground parking lot. For extra confidence, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental Beacon (under 25 feet) for your first trip, or book a host who offers delivery so you barely have to drive. Stick to wider routes like I-84 or Route 9 instead of narrow mountain backroads. Pro tip: do your first practice drive in the spacious Metro-North train station lot before heading north toward Hyde Park.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/towing-trailerWhat happens if something goes wrong with my RV on the road?
You're covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance with your protection plan, so if you get a flat on the Taconic State Parkway, run out of propane at Fahnestock, or have an electrical issue at a Hudson Valley campground, one phone call dispatches help. The renter protection plan handles most damage issues based on the tier you chose, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Your host is also a quick text away for questions about their specific RV. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's number in your phone before you leave Beacon, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so it's handy if you ever need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Beacon RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is completely fine, and Beacon's location makes it a fantastic launchpad for an RV road trip from Beacon. Popular routes include heading north into Vermont's Green Mountains (about 3 hours), east into the Berkshires of Massachusetts (about 90 minutes), south to the Jersey Shore (about 2.5 hours), or west into Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains (about 2 hours). Cross-border trips into Canada may be allowed on some listings depending on the host's RV and insurance, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: a 5-day loop from Beacon to Acadia National Park in Maine (about 425 miles each way) is one of the most scenic routes in the Northeast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Beacon RV trip?
Plan smart and fuel won't blow your budget. New York gas prices in the Hudson Valley typically run $3.30 to $3.85 per gallon for regular and $3.95 to $4.50 for diesel as of recent months. A Class C motorhome averages 8 to 12 miles per gallon, a campervan rental can hit 16 to 22 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. For a typical 4-day, 400-mile loop from Beacon through the Catskills and back, expect to spend roughly $130 to $200 on fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Fishkill or Newburgh where gas runs 15 to 25 cents cheaper per gallon than stations directly off I-84 exits, and use GasBuddy to spot the best prices along Route 9.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Beacon?
Earlier is better, especially for Hudson Valley fall foliage. New York State Parks like Clarence Fahnestock and Mills Norrie take reservations through ReserveAmerica, and prime weekend sites for late September and October get snapped up as soon as they become available. For summer weekends, aim for 2 to 4 months ahead. Private parks like Newburgh KOA and Sylvan Lake Beach Park also fill quickly for holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day). Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) are easier to score and quieter, and if you strike out on a state park site, the best campgrounds near Beacon on private land like Black Bear Campground in Florida, NY almost always have weekday availability.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Beacon, NY?
Beacon's driving is friendly for RVs once you know the routes. I-84 and Route 9 are wide, well-maintained, and great for any rig size. The narrower, twistier roads to avoid in larger RVs include Route 9D south toward Cold Spring (beautiful but tight in spots with low-clearance railroad bridges near Breakneck Ridge), and the Taconic State Parkway, which prohibits commercial vehicles and trucks (your personal RV is fine, but stay aware of the 12-foot height limit at some parkway overpasses). Winter brings snow and occasional ice from December through March. Summer thunderstorms can pop up fast. Pro tip: use Google Maps' RV-friendly routing or the RV Trip Wizard app to dodge low bridges, and never take the Saw Mill or Hutchinson parkways heading toward NYC in any RV.
dot.ny.gov/traffic/traveler-infoWhat amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Beacon?
Campgrounds near Beacon range from rustic state parks to full-hookup resorts, so you can pick what fits. Clarence Fahnestock State Park offers 30 and 50-amp electric sites, dump stations, hot showers, and potable water fills, but no sewer at individual sites. Newburgh KOA has full hookups (water, electric, sewer), wifi, a pool, and a camp store. Mills Norrie offers electric sites plus a marina, golf course, and Hudson River views. Black Bear RV Park in Florida, NY is open year-round with 50-amp full hookups. Most New York state park dump stations are free for registered campers. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving the campground because potable fill stations between Beacon and the Catskills can be sparse on smaller routes.
parks.ny.gov/parks/fahnestock/details.aspxWhat's included inside a typical Beacon RV rental?
Beacon-area RVs come loaded for a comfortable Hudson Valley adventure. Expect a fully equipped kitchen (fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, cookware, and dishes), a bathroom with toilet and shower in most Class B, C, and larger rigs, sleeping for 2 to 8 people depending on the model, climate control with air conditioning and propane furnace heat, and a dinette that converts to extra sleeping space. Many listings include a generator, outdoor awning, TV, and Bluetooth speakers, and a growing number offer wifi hotspots or starlink. Seatbelts are provided for travel-rated passengers. Pro tip: check the listing's Amenities section carefully and message the host if you need specific gear like a roof-mounted bike rack for the Hudson Valley Rail Trail or kayak racks for Hudson River paddles.
nhtsa.gov/equipment/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and pickup options do hosts typically offer?
Beacon hosts offer plenty of helpful add-ons to make your motorhome rental Beacon feel turnkey. Common options include linen and kitchen kits ($40 to $90), generator usage (often $3 to $5 per hour over an included allowance), bike racks, outdoor camping kits with chairs and grills, portable wifi hotspots ($10 to $15 per day), and even pre-stocked propane and full fresh-water tanks. Pickup is typically scheduled between 12 and 4 pm with dropoff by 11 am, but many hosts in Beacon, Fishkill, and Newburgh offer flexible windows if you ask. Mileage allowances usually range from 100 to 150 free miles per night. Pro tip: bundle add-ons when you book to lock in pricing, and ask about a late dropoff if you want one last Sunday morning hike at Mount Beacon before returning the rig.
iloveny.com/things-to-do/outdoors/camping/How do payment and security deposits work on a Beacon RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy directly with a credit or debit card, never cash to the host. Your nightly rate, taxes, protection plan, and any add-ons are itemized transparently at checkout. Most hosts also require a refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value), which is handled separately from your booking payment as a pre-authorization on your card and released after a clean return. To keep that deposit returned in full, do a walkaround photo inspection with your host at both pickup and dropoff, return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels, and empty the holding tanks at a dump station if your rental requires it. Pro tip: keep gas receipts from your last fill-up to document fuel levels just in case.
