Campgrounds and RV parks near Big Flats, NY

The Gorge Trail at Watkins Glen State Park is the region's signature hike. Within roughly two miles the stream descends past 200-foot cliffs and 19 waterfalls, with paths that cross over, under, and through the spray. Rim trails offer alternative routes for those avoiding the stone stairs. Corning Museum of Glass, the Rockwell Museum, and the National Soaring Museum sit within a short drive, and the Chemung County Historical Society runs Revolutionary War history tours tied to the 1779 Sullivan-Clinton Campaign. Newtown Battlefield features the Sullivan Monument, an overlook, and interpretive signs. Seneca Lake and the Chemung River add fishing, kayaking, and boat launches. Catherine Creek near Watkins Glen is renowned for its annual spring run of rainbow trout, and Finger Lakes wineries and breweries line the routes north.

The camping season in this part of New York runs roughly mid-May through mid-October. State park campgrounds at Watkins Glen and Newtown Battlefield operate on that window, with sites and cabins typically open from about May 15 through October 12. Private parks such as Ferenbaugh Camping and Recreation Area run a similar spring-through-fall schedule. Summer is the busiest stretch. Mid-June through August draws heavy traffic to Watkins Glen, especially on weekends and around race dates at Watkins Glen International, and reservations should be locked in well ahead. The Olympic-size pool at Watkins Glen State Park is open from late June to Labor Day. Spring brings the waterfalls at strong flow, but trails can be slick and some sections may be closed after storms. Fall offers cool nights, colorful foliage, and lighter crowds through early October. Winter closes overnight camping in the area; day use continues at Watkins Glen, but overnight RV camping is not available in the offseason at the state parks.

Hookups vary by park. Watkins Glen State Park offers 305 campsites across six loops with restrooms, hot showers, dump stations, and firewood for sale; only the Mohawk Village and Cayuga Village loops have electric sites, and no sites have individual water or sewer hookups. Newtown Battlefield's main campground is smaller and mostly primitive, with a 20-foot vehicle limit at many sites; a limited number of electric sites can accommodate rigs up to about 40 feet. Ferenbaugh Camping and Recreation Area and Watkins Glen / Corning KOA Resort provide full-hookup pull-thrus with 30 and 50 amp service. Expect wooded terrain, quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. at the state parks, and strict firewood rules to limit invasive pests. Buy wood on site or from approved local vendors. Pets are allowed at campsites on a leash with current proof of rabies inoculation, but they are not permitted on the Gorge Trail at Watkins Glen.
