Camping near Castleton-on-Hudson, New York
Castleton-on-Hudson is a small village on the east bank of the Hudson River in Rensselaer County, roughly ten miles south of Albany. For RV travelers, it sits at a useful junction: the New York State Thruway (I-90) and US-9 both run nearby, and the surrounding Capital Region opens onto the Helderberg Escarpment to the west, the Taconic and Berkshire foothills to the east, and the northern Catskills to the south.
Campground options in the area split into two groups. Private RV parks such as Alps Family Campground, located between Averill Park and Stephentown about 17 miles east of Albany with a season running May 1st to October 15th, and Spacious Skies Woodland Hills in Austerlitz, set between the Taconic and Berkshire mountains with sites offering 30-amp or 50-amp electric and many with sewer, cater specifically to RVers with hookups. State parks like Thompsons Lake Campground at Thacher State Park, situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, offer more rustic setups without electric hookups.
Glamping-style options are also within reach, notably Treetopia Campground in the northern Catskills, about an hour south.
Things to do around Castleton-on-Hudson
The Hudson River corridor is the main draw. Boat launches, riverfront parks, and the towns of Hudson and Catskill are all within a short drive, and Albany's museums, State Capitol, and Empire State Plaza are ten to fifteen minutes north.
For outdoor days, Cherry Plain State Park has hiking, biking, and nature trails that double as cross-country ski trails in winter, plus fishing for bass, bullheads, and pickerel on Black River Pond. Thacher State Park sits along the Helderberg Escarpment with a sandy beach on Thompsons Lake, mixed hardwood and conifer forests, limestone outcroppings, and over 25 miles of trails. The Taconic and Berkshire ranges east of the village add more trails, and skiers head to nearby resorts in winter.
Families staying at private campgrounds often mix in on-site swimming and fishing. Spacious Skies Woodland Hills has a private pond for swimming, fishing, and paddle boating, and Alps Family Campground has a swimming pool and fishing ponds.

The camping season in this part of the Capital Region is short and clearly defined. Most private and state park campgrounds run from spring through mid-fall, with a few private parks holding a limited number of year-round self-contained sites. Alps Family Campground's season runs from May 1st to October 15th, and Cherry Plain State Park's campground operates from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, with weekend-only operation in the early shoulder weeks and daily operation from the last weekend of June onward.
Summer brings the heaviest demand. Weekend sites at state park campgrounds around Albany fill quickly between Memorial Day and Labor Day, especially lakeside sites. Bookings should be locked in well ahead, particularly for holiday weekends and July.
Fall is popular for foliage in the Catskills and Taconics, with cool nights and lighter crowds through late September and early October. Winter camping is limited: state parks close, private grounds shrink to a handful of self-contained sites, and snow and sub-freezing temperatures are common from December through March.

How to book campgrounds in the area
New York State Park campgrounds use a single reservation system. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, and same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival. Reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. This covers both Thompsons Lake at Thacher State Park and Cherry Plain State Park.
Private campgrounds book directly. Alps Family Campground, Treetopia Campground, and Spacious Skies Woodland Hills all take reservations through their own websites, and popular summer weekends can sell out weeks or months out.
For Thompsons Lake specifically, note that the campground does not have electric sites, so RVers relying on hookups should plan around a private park or a generator, with generator hours limited to 9AM to 11AM and 5PM to 9PM.
What to expect on the ground
State park campgrounds in the region lean rustic. Sites are wooded, most have a picnic table and fire ring, and hookups are limited or absent. Cherry Plain State Park has about 30 sites split among trailer, lakeside tent, and hike-in tent sites, with modern restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and fire rings, and no electric, water, or sewer hookups. Rules follow the standard state playbook: quiet hours are observed from 10PM to 7AM, and visitors must leave the park by 10PM.
Private parks provide the RV comforts. Alps Family Campground offers RV sites with pull-through and back-in options, water and electric on every site and sewer on many, along with a heated swimming pool, laundromat, showers, playground, and activity pavilion.
Pets are broadly welcome, but state parks require proof of rabies vaccination at check-in and a leash no longer than six feet. Cell service is generally reliable near I-90 and thinner in the hills east of the river.
