Campgrounds near Center Moriches
Center Moriches sits on the south shore of Long Island in Suffolk County, roughly midway between the Great South Bay beaches and the North Fork wine country. RV renters use it as a base for two very different landscapes: the barrier-island dunes of Fire Island to the south and the rolling farmland and vineyards of the North and South Forks to the east.
Most developed campgrounds within an hour of town are run by New York State Parks or the National Park Service. Heckscher State Park sits on the Great South Bay in East Islip, Wildwood State Park occupies a hardwood bluff on Long Island Sound in Wading River, and Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island is reached only by ferry from Patchogue or by private boat. Private options are limited on Long Island, with Eastern Long Island Kampground in Greenport being one of the few full-hookup RV parks on the North Fork.
Across Long Island Sound in Connecticut, Hammonasset Beach State Park offers a large shoreline campground that is a common alternative when Long Island sites are full.
Things to do near Center Moriches
Beach time drives most trips. Heckscher State Park fronts the Great South Bay with views of Fire Island, offers paved multi-use trails for biking and walking, and supports bay swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. Wildwood State Park has beach frontage on Long Island Sound and twelve miles of marked trails through hardwood forest.
Watch Hill Campground sits next to the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness, the only federally designated wilderness area in New York State, with ranger-led programs that include guided canoe trips in the salt marsh.
Off-park, RV renters based near Greenport at Eastern Long Island Kampground are within a short drive of North Fork wineries, farm stands, and the Shelter Island and Orient Point ferries.

The Long Island camping season is short and busy. Heckscher State Park's campground runs from late May through the weekend after Labor Day. Wildwood's tent and trailer loops typically operate from April through October, with cottages available from mid-April into mid-October. Watch Hill on Fire Island runs from mid-May to mid-October and is operated by the concessioner LoveFINS.
July and August are peak. Weekends fill first, and holiday weekends can book out months ahead. Wildwood fills quickly during summer weekends, and Watch Hill sites are in high demand from mid-June through Labor Day. Pets are not permitted at Heckscher campsites or cottages, so travelers with dogs need to plan around private parks such as Eastern Long Island Kampground, which is pet-friendly.
Shoulder-season trips in May, September, and early October usually mean cooler nights, fewer bugs, easier bookings, and open beaches without lifeguard coverage.

We rented this RV from August 21–25, and from beginning to end, we had an absolutely wonderful experience. Charlie and Margaret were amazing hosts! Their communication was excellent, and they were always helpful, friendly, responsive, and very professional. They truly made the entire experience easy and enjoyable. The RV itself was beautiful, modern, extremely clean, and very well maintained. As soon as we walked inside, we were impressed. The lighting throughout the RV was fantastic—there were plenty of lights, which made the space feel bright, comfortable, and welcoming. The bathroom was extremely clean and surprisingly spacious. The bedroom was large, comfortable, and cozy, with plenty of storage space for clothes and personal belongings. We never felt cramped at all. The kitchen was one of our favorite features. It was beautiful and spacious, with a long countertop that gave us plenty of room to prepare meals. Charlie and Margaret really thought of everything. The cabinets and drawers were stocked with pots, pans, plates, utensils, and everything else we needed. They even provided plenty of cleaning supplies, including a broom, vacuum, Lysol wipes, and more. What impressed us most was how much this RV truly felt like a home away from home. We had everything we needed—and honestly, even more than we expected. You can tell Charlie and Margaret put a lot of thought and care into making sure their guests are comfortable and have a great experience. Whether you’re going camping, attending an outdoor event, or simply looking for a comfortable RV getaway, I would highly recommend renting from Charlie and Margaret. Beautiful RV, outstanding hosts, excellent communication, and a five-star experience all around. Thank you, Charlie and Margaret, for helping make our trip so comfortable and memorable! We would absolutely rent from you again! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Center Moriches, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Center Moriches, NY?
RV rental in Center Moriches is more affordable than most Long Island vacations, especially when you factor in the savings on East End hotels. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers from around $100 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes between $175 and $300, and luxury Class A rigs at the higher end. Mid-week bookings in late spring or September give you the best value, since summer Hamptons-season weekends carry a premium. For a cheap RV rental Center Moriches families love, filter by travel trailers with delivery included so you skip towing costs entirely. Pro tip: bundle a 5 to 7 night stay and many hosts offer a weekly discount right on the listing.
discoverlongisland.com/where-to-stay/campgrounds-rv-parks/What license do I need to rent an RV in Center Moriches?
Good news: a regular New York State driver's license (or any valid US/Canadian license) is all you need to rent an RV in Center Moriches. There's no CDL or special endorsement required for any of the Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels on RVezy. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from overseas? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home-country license. That's it, you're cleared to pick up the keys and head toward Smith Point or the North Fork.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs protection included with my RVezy rental in Center Moriches?
Yes, every RV rental in Center Moriches booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Sunrise Highway with real peace of mind. During checkout you choose your coverage level from RVezy's tiered protection plans (not set by the host), and the plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip up to the plan limits. Combine that with a thorough host walkthrough at pickup and you're set up to enjoy the ride from Moriches Bay to Montauk with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Long Island trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets one consistent cancellation policy across all listings (hosts don't set their own), and it includes a full-refund grace period right after booking. After that, your refund depends on how far out you cancel relative to your trip start date. If a hurricane or major storm makes your Center Moriches RV trip unsafe, contact RVezy support and they'll help you sort out options. You can review the full policy in the RVezy Help Center before you book, whether you choose a campervan in Eastport or a Class C in Manorville.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Center Moriches RV rental?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Center Moriches options are easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see listings from local hosts who welcome dogs (some allow cats too). Many Long Island campgrounds are dog-friendly as well: Cathedral Pines County Park in Middle Island and Indian Island County Park in Riverhead both allow leashed pets, and the Quogue Wildlife Refuge about 15 minutes east has gentle trails perfect for a morning walk. Smith Point County Park's beach has seasonal pet rules, so check before you go. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and bring a mat for sandy paws.
suffolkcountyny.gov/Departments/ParksCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or driveway in Center Moriches?
Yes, RV delivery Center Moriches is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if you've never towed before. Many local hosts will drive the RV directly to your campsite at Smith Point County Park in Shirley, Wildwood State Park in Wading River, or even your family's driveway in the Hamptons. They level the rig, hook up water and electric, walk you through every system, and pick it up at the end. Use the Delivery filter when searching and check each host's delivery radius and fee. It turns a Long Island RV trip into something closer to a luxury beach house rental, minus the property-tax pricing.
parks.ny.gov/camping/How far can I drive, and do any rentals offer unlimited mileage?
You've got plenty of range for a classic Long Island loop. Most Center Moriches hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles available at a per-mile rate set on the listing, and some hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, look for the unlimited badge on the listing. From Center Moriches it's about 50 miles east to Montauk Point, 25 miles to the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead, 70 miles west to NYC, and roughly 90 miles to the North Fork wineries via the ferry loop. For a quick getaway, message the host with your planned route so they can quote the right mileage package upfront.
dot.ny.gov/indexWhere are the best campgrounds near Center Moriches?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Center Moriches are mostly within 30 minutes: Smith Point County Park in Shirley sits right on the Atlantic with full hookups and 50-amp service; Wildwood State Park Campground in Wading River offers 600 wooded acres on Long Island Sound (open April through October); Cathedral Pines County Park in Middle Island gives you a peaceful pine-forest setting with electric and water; Indian Island County Park in Riverhead overlooks Flanders Bay; and Sears Bellows County Park in Hampton Bays is the off-grid gem of the bunch. Suffolk County parks often favor residents, so book non-resident sites as early as possible.
suffolkcountyny.gov/Departments/Parks/Our-ParksWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Center Moriches?
Late May through mid-October is prime RV season on the South Shore, with the absolute sweet spot being September and early October, the water's still warm, the Hamptons crowds thin out, and overnight lows sit in the comfortable 50s. July and August deliver classic 80°F beach weather but campsites book months out. May and early June offer mild 60 to 75°F days and the lowest rental rates. Winter rentals are limited since most Suffolk County campgrounds close, though a handful (like Indian Island and Southaven) stay open year-round for the brave. For your first Center Moriches RV trip, target the week after Labor Day, locals call it the secret season.
weather.gov/okx/climateI've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, and first time renting an RV on Long Island is more common than you'd think. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup covering driving, leveling, propane, water, and the dump valves, so you're never tossed the keys and waved off. For your first trip, consider a smaller Class C motorhome (around 24 to 28 feet) or a travel trailer delivered to your campsite, both are easy to handle. Stick to the Long Island Expressway (I-495) and Sunrise Highway (Route 27), and avoid the Southern State and Northern State Parkways, which have low bridges that ban RVs. Ask your host to text you their cell during the trip; most are happy to troubleshoot remotely.
dot.ny.gov/indexWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on the Sunrise Highway or a dead battery at Smith Point gets handled with one phone call. For non-emergency questions (the awning is stuck, the fridge won't cool), message your host directly through the RVezy app, most Center Moriches hosts respond within minutes. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip. The nearest major RV service centers are in Medford and Calverton, both under 30 minutes away, in case anything needs a deeper look.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Center Moriches RV rental into Connecticut, New Jersey, or other states?
Yes, interstate travel is one of the great perks of an RV road trip from Center Moriches. The Cross Sound Ferry from Orient Point puts you in New London, Connecticut in about 80 minutes, perfect for reaching Mystic Seaport or continuing to Newport, Rhode Island. Heading west into New Jersey works too via Staten Island routes (skip NYC parkways, which prohibit RVs). Most hosts allow travel throughout the continental US, just confirm your route when booking. One firm rule: travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Canadian trips may be allowed depending on the host, ask before you book.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I expect?
Budget realistically and you'll have no surprises. Class C motorhomes near Center Moriches average about 8 to 12 MPG on gasoline, Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG, campervans get 14 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. Long Island gas prices typically run 30 to 60 cents above the national average, with stations along Montauk Highway and the LIE service road being your easiest fill-ups. For a 4-night, 250-mile loop from Center Moriches to Montauk and back in a Class C, plan on roughly $120 to $180 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Riverhead before heading east, gas in the Hamptons gets noticeably pricier.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Center Moriches?
The earlier the better, especially for summer. New York State Parks (including Wildwood) accept reservations up to nine months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and the popular oceanfront sites at Wildwood and Hither Hills State Park in Montauk fill within hours of opening. Suffolk County parks like Smith Point and Cathedral Pines use the Suffolk County Parks reservation system and prioritize Green Key cardholders (non-resident sites still available, just fewer). For a Memorial Day through Labor Day trip, aim to book by February. Shoulder-season campers can often snag a great spot two to four weeks out. Insider tip: weekday Sunday-through-Wednesday stays are dramatically easier to grab.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What should I know about driving an RV on Long Island roads?
Here's the single most important rule for any motorhome rental Center Moriches: do NOT drive on the Southern State, Northern State, Belt, Ocean, or Meadowbrook Parkways. New York State law prohibits RVs (and any vehicle over 7'6" to 10' depending on the road) on parkways, and the historic stone-arch bridges have caused countless roof-peelers. Stick to the Long Island Expressway (I-495), Sunrise Highway (NY-27), Montauk Highway (NY-27A), and Route 25. Summer Friday and Sunday traffic east of Exit 70 can be brutal, leave early or late. Your host will point out the safe routes during walkthrough, and Google Maps with the RV/truck setting helps too.
dot.ny.gov/programs/brochures/parkway-brochureWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Center Moriches?
Most Suffolk County and New York State campgrounds within 30 minutes of Center Moriches offer water and 30/50-amp electric hookups, sanitary dump stations, hot showers, flush toilets, and potable water fill stations. Smith Point County Park has full hookups (water, electric, sewer at the site) plus direct beach access. Wildwood State Park offers electric and water with a central dump station. Cathedral Pines and Indian Island provide electric and water but no sewer at-site, you'll use the dump station on the way out. Cell signal is solid across most of central Suffolk County (Verizon and AT&T both strong). For groceries and propane refills, the Center Moriches Stop & Shop and Riverhead Tanger Outlets area cover everything you need.
parks.ny.gov/parks/wildwood/details.aspxWhat's inside the RVs I can rent in Center Moriches?
You'll feel right at home. Most Center Moriches listings on RVezy come fully equipped: a queen or king bed, bunks or a convertible dinette for the kids, a kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge and sink, a full bathroom with toilet and shower, roof AC, propane heat, and seatbelts for everyone riding. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes often include a flat-screen TV, exterior awning, outdoor speakers, and a generator for off-grid stays. Campervan rental Center Moriches options skew toward compact, fuel-efficient builds great for ferry trips to Fire Island. Wifi varies, so ask the host or plan to use your phone hotspot. Linens, kitchen kits, and bikes are often available as add-ons.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What add-ons and pickup options are available?
Lots of flexibility here. Popular add-ons for RV camping Center Moriches trips include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots, plates and utensils ($25 to $50), generators for boondocking, bikes, beach chairs, kayaks, propane fire pits, and even outdoor grills, all listed under each RV with transparent pricing. For pickup, you can either grab the RV at the host's location in Center Moriches or nearby Eastport, Manorville, or Mastic, or pay for delivery to your campsite or rental house. Standard rental days run noon-to-noon, but many hosts are flexible if you message ahead. Mileage policies, generator hours, and pet fees are all spelled out clearly on the listing before you confirm.
suffolkcountyny.gov/Departments/ParksHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform when you book (credit or debit card), never directly to the host in cash. A refundable security deposit is authorized on your card separately from your booking payment, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV, and released back to you a few days after the trip ends assuming no damage or extra cleaning. To keep that deposit safe: dump tanks before return, refuel to the agreed level, return the RV roughly as clean as you got it, and document any pre-existing scuffs in photos during the walkthrough. If anything's unclear, message the host through the app so everything stays on the record.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Center Moriches?
An RV road trip from Center Moriches puts some of the Northeast's best scenery within easy reach. Drive 50 miles east to Montauk Point State Park for the iconic lighthouse and dramatic ocean cliffs. Head 25 miles north to the North Fork wineries around Greenport and stay at North Fork Cottages & RV Resort. Catch the Smith Point ferry or drive to Robert Moses State Park for Fire Island National Seashore access. Cross the Orient Point ferry into Connecticut for Mystic Seaport (about 3 hours total). Or point west and reach the Catskills in 3.5 hours for mountain hiking. A family RV trip Center Moriches families love is the simple 4-day Montauk-to-North-Fork loop, beaches, lighthouses, and farm stands the whole way.
